Investigators are finding no evidence so far leaking a fire on -- -- dreamliner at London's Heathrow airport to the plane's battery system.
The -- sparking new concerns about the overall safety of that jetliner concerns about overheating batteries grounded Boeing's dreamliner for three months earlier this year.
Your goals as former managing director of the National Transportation Safety -- it it sounds like a weird one Peter a plane just sitting there are parked.
Waiting to go out on its next flight and it's suddenly catches fire.
We did some research and it happens I guess about eighty times a year onboard jetliners that are not even flowing.
Exactly I mean it's not.
It's not as unusual.
As you -- think.
But yeah for the dreamliner.
Or they didn't need it now that plane is under the microscope either fairly or unfairly.
And any event is gonna put it on the front.
Page and ironic -- Ethiopian airlines was the first airline as I understand to get the dreamliner back in the air after its grounding earlier this year.
And lo and behold it's a -- Ethiopian plane that catches fire at Heathrow.
And the BAA I'd be the British investigative.
Unit is very good but they're very close mouth I don't think we're going to be hearing very much about this in the immediate future.
The US is participating and so was -- but it really is.
Both the location of the fire and apparently how intense it was.
I guess yeah I was trying to think of an analogy when you when you park your car you turn off the key you think there aren't.
And you know electrical impulses going but there are things like clocks and so forth that are kept running from the battery even when your car is turned off.
In a jetliner like this there are major systems that are still getting power.
That is still functioning and the question that there's I mean the real question is when did this fire start.
I mean that's what the investigators have I've got to find out.
Because you know they they need to know.
How long it was going on and what initiated.
The brits are good though they'll they'll figure this out.
And it's it's not good news for Boeing in in in a way it's really bad news for all Americans because of Boeing is I still I believe still our largest exporter and -- the 787.
Is having problems and they can't build -- sell more of those planes that's bad news for the nation's economy.
Well it is it's too soon -- you have to say whether this is gonna impact the order book the 787.
Has got a tremendous.
People have been happy with the planes performances.
Except of course for the ground -- let's let's see where this one goes but it certainly is.
Unneeded for -- And then let's let's take a quick look at what happened in San Francisco the investigation of that 777.
Crash still under way they are supposedly.
Looking at the systems of the the auto throttle and the other systems.
That that -- that plane's power as it's coming in for landing.
What can you tell us about the latest look at.
The plane's power systems and -- running.
Well it appears as though the throttle was set.
And the question now is what either caused -- to.
To shut off.
Or what caused it to malfunction.
There's no indication that it really malfunction.
So the question is how does it get turned off and who was watching the the air speed.
It's going to be I think a combination of human factors.
And -- the pilots in Iraq with the machine.
It's my understanding that auto throttles on that -- are designed to shut down at a hundred feet elevation so they don't start blasting power.
As the pilot is trying to bleed off power for the one.
That's right there and and this also an indication that.
That the eyes as the flying pilot has his hands on the throttle if they're not loosely on the throttle that could disengage the auto throttle if he's gripping it.
So did you just don't know yet I mean this is going to be a pretty complex investigation.
No easy answer and we'll wait some months probably for word from the NTSB Peter goals.
Thank you John.
