But what should you do if you suddenly find yourself in a similar situation and it's your own child goes missing Marc -- as a child safety expert in the founder.
-- foundation started after his daughter Polly was tragically kidnapped and murdered back in 1993.
And he's my guest this morning good morning to mark.
Good morning Gretchen so this is very helpful for for parents to have you on today because obviously you became so proactive after the terrible tragedy that happened.
Do you in your family we've heard more and more about these cases in Cleveland -- three women who were founded now this one.
In Texas what should parents do if they find themselves in this horrible situation how do they think straight.
Well first of all you do several things you cooperate fully with law enforcement.
You've never give up hope and every day you get up and try to do something proactive.
To resolve the case and bring your child home alive.
-- so the first thing you said that you did that was so helpful was.
Is that you contacted the FBI did somebody tell you to do that -- you just knew to do that.
You know I nobody told me to do -- at all those kind of stunned I received the news via a phone call.
And as soon as it was confirmed and -- first I called back Petaluma PD to confirm that she was kidnapped.
Is I did contact the FBI.
And I guess in the back of my mind.
I was thinking about the Lindbergh baby and how they got involved in that turned it into a huge case.
And ultimately got it resolved and they did come -- they came into the case and were very very helpful.
For the two months while we were looking.
You also say social media in this teenage can be so important of course contacting media desks to get that.
News people on your side I want to turn though to what parents can do to help their kids.
Because as a mother myself you know we've been told tell your kids to stay away from strangers but you have a different philosophy what is it.
Well first of all everybody talks strangers Gretchen you and I will get the line at the supermarket and talk to the person.
In front of us and behind us and our children can see that kind of behavior so we're displaying hypocrisy when we tell them not to do something that we do want a regular basis we also tend to limit their universe when we.
Tell them not to talk to strangers and we also they'll lose opportunities because the reality is is that the vast majority of strangers.
Will help a child out of a difficult situation and particularly well in other kids police officers in uniform.
Or store clerks or security guards in -- retail type of the situation.
-- -- have to inform them about and unfortunately the horrible details of possibly being kidnapped but here are the things that can help them self defense classes.
And now with technology GPS on phones right.
Well sure I mean every cell phone that is every cell phone that is manufactured.
Today is GPS capable in every major cellphone carrier has a -- family finder program so that you can track.
Your child via their cell phone.
The problem is is that only tracks the device itself so the child is in trouble somebody does take the child.
Quite likely the perpetrators will take the phone and talks about the window but then again the -- also provides kids and parents with 24/7 -- -- Right that you advise all parents have that conversation -- your kids today.
About what can happen Marc -- such a great reminder but thanks so much for your expert advice on that -- see -- Button they're still to remember -- -- so thanks so much always.
