Of course all of us of -- watching -- -- great delight.
The birth of the royal.
-- and Kate Middleton.
Point she'll look good when she came out of the hospital and she kept flowing hair if that I address I -- I was cheering from my offices as we watch the new air.
Being debuted but what about maternity -- -- now.
Depending -- where you work you get a good amount of maternity leave some people -- some people get less but did you know in Britain I didn't know this.
That they get 52 weeks guaranteed of maternity leave 39 of those weeks paid.
And compare that to the mothers in the US.
You do it again depending some people get eight weeks so do a lot of us are looking at and be happy with anything if it can't be -- so I do you tell let's talk about the difference.
Om and what new moms.
Expect yet and that's exactly why I wrote this piece because I was looking with and BI I I don't have a baby is young is here is congratulations -- I think Larry I have two older boys and I remember I'm very bucket work for a company that has a great generous leave policy.
But some of some of my friends do not in the US is now.
In this position of being the only industrialized nation in the world.
Which doesn't mandate -- require paid maternity leave for a new women and -- new mothers and infants and so.
It puts us in company with Swaziland.
And and three other countries that do not have the economic prowess we do.
Every other industrialized nation a -- in 67 nations that were studied recently 97%.
Mandate some form of paid leave including Iraq Afghanistan.
Many countries that we never measure ourselves against -- if you're absolutely right there's this huge difference if you work for a great company with a generous policy.
Your urine -- -- -- if you live in the state New Jersey California Rhode Island.
Which counts some form of paid maternity leave them on but everybody else is left to fend for themselves under the family Medical Leave Act and let's talk about that the 1993 federal.
Family and Medical Leave Act and got it appear on the screen requires companies with fifty plus employees to guaranteed twelve weeks of unpaid leave.
For new mothers and any additional time past that depends on the state -- you just said.
Where you live and work so.
Everybody guaranteed twelve weeks.
Bottom line everybody's guaranteed twelve weeks of unpaid leave and the difficulty there is that -- as you know being in new mom.
You know if you have a leave policy and you're able to take advantage of that -- some -- even a percentage of your full income.
You're able to make.
You know this big adjustment in your life you bond with your child and so every study shows it's in the best -- not only of the mother and a father most importantly my mother and the father.
But the baby is well.
We know that people who -- bonding with their parents early on.
Are much more successful in life much healthier in life.
And so it's to the benefit of society as a whole which is why it's become part of these human rights declarations and why most countries in the world are -- and you've got this you've written this piece is going to be USA today is.
Already it's up -- -- yet it's up today's of the op Ed piece in USA today.
Talks about this and I think for any new mother again which I am.
It is it is a very important issue and I do want to share my thought I just got back from maternity leave -- a couple weeks ago but here's my baby that's Jackson Marshall.
He's five and a half months old areas that -- prop them in that corner of leather couch.
And that was us on mothers today in the park.
Thank you for.
And helping me and then he's a rocker my my husband and I are rock and rollers and we got the biggest ones we got a lot of rock and little ones he's -- kind of get.
Is the gorgeous day you -- -- I can't say I'm aggravated it yes I am a stay home with him.
And to be able to have that bonding time you're so right when I first got -- it looked at -- I'm eternally figure out how I was gonna take it how much I was gonna take it you know.
All of that I thought what -- might need this much time and boy it does go by really fast.
And it is so very important so how -- we get caught up to.
The rest of the world or at least you know it's terrible it's interesting since I've been talking about -- -- perfect people from the left and the right Republicans Democrats most people -- with this most people want the costs -- sure there are costs.
They are minimal some people put about 800 dollars a year per employees something.
The states like New Jersey -- it's less than forty dollars a year it depends on how it's in fact.
You know enacted.
But of course you know were talking about long term savings and you just mentioned a great point you know new mothers who stay home with their babies.
Are more likely to go back to work if they haven't paid maternity leave -- can't stay there.
Because they have the time to get themselves healthy to get your baby healthy to make plans for this great new enormous change in their life.
There isn't much in more in the interest of businesses which is why businesses in California New Jersey.
Haven't fought against the paid leave in these states so it's to the benefit almost -- everybody and so it kind of crosses all these partisan lines I mean I'm a political scientist I spent so much time talking about Democrats Republicans.
Most people agree this is -- the only issue this is a health issue.
This is in the best interest of society there's almost no downside yes there is a cost the state to organize it like the insurance is -- -- the unemployment insurance so it's a little bit out of each employee's paycheck -- every -- less than forty dollars a year it's worth.
That and plus you know when you -- do have the time and in we talk about the time allowed to bond.
It's not just about that's about coming back not so frazzled -- -- on you know I don't think -- was -- blanket back but I set is certainly felt more whole.
Being able to -- the time to kind of collect myself and and say OK I'm going back to my old life.
You know very exciting life that I have here.
And be able to adjust so I I appreciate you coming on -- want to.
