Officials in -- reportedly considering a controversy a new plan to save their city from financial real -- By using the president's health care overhaul to offset the fact that they've just become the biggest city in US history to file for bankruptcy.
The motor city -- some five point seven billion dollars in retiree health care costs and now.
-- are apparently considering pushing folks on of the president's plan who worked too young to qualify for Medicare.
And while the administration is now that the US taxpayer will not be paying for a Detroit bailout.
If this plane goes through it could -- US taxpayers will end up footing the bill for more than just Detroit retirees.
-- I'll get it -- columnist and Fox News contributor and joins us now to discuss.
Right Michelle we've been told no federal money allegedly is going to try to help of the -- This be a backdoor way to make that happen now.
Yeah up in my not even be a back door right I really think that this is the front door bail out and it's turned obamacare into the mother of -- bail out vehicles.
It's not a surprise to anyone who saw that from the beginning the obamacare architects were constructing.
A way to it.
Basically facilitate this cost shifting -- heat.
Is doing is not actually -- because a couple of months ago Rahm Emanuel in the city of Chicago announced that they were going to do the same kind of thing dump.
There retirees award near retirees.
Onto the Obama care system and it it is a huge injustice.
Not only to hardworking taxpayers who have been responsible.
But to people who live in cities and states and localities that have not racked up these huge massive unfunded liabilities.
Yeah and you mentioned in Chicago were of course there's a lawsuit pending now by a lot of folks and that's not the solution they're looking for a mean a lot of them say they took public jobs -- -- and then for a long time because.
Of the benefits that pay off long term you -- in a lot of cases make -- in the public sector and -- short term but the benefits are you know for a lifetime for many folks.
We now understand that 61 major cities in the US there's a 126 billion dollars in retiree health care commitment.
And all but 6% and it is on.
Funded so I imagine this is gonna go past Detroit if it works I can imagine a lot of other cities where they're gonna say.
Let's put these folks on the exchanges.
And that's not free.
Yes that's right it's going to add up to trillions more in costs for all of us who are paying for.
The Obama care bill.
It is a massive sea of red -- And there are a couple of things I think that if they weren't so awful would be somewhat amusing of course hanging over all of this is that -- -- promise from President Obama.
That if you like your health care you can keep it.
Under obamacare and now we -- have all of these public employee union workers government workers who are blocking.
At the prospect of being forced into.
The very -- that -- union bosses foisted on the rest of us well into staying professor Timothy Josh too is it law professor at Washington and -- he makes some really interesting points and he's really followed the -- on its implementation -- we've seen it roll out.
He says you know.
This is mandatory spending at Detroit and other cities but these retirees onto the exchanges it's mandatory government spending so it's not like that that can say we -- expect this campaign fort.
He also notes that if it does work for some of these retirees they can actually have to pay more.
-- up on the exchange then they would obviously if they stayed under the plan they thought they were gonna get.
And the one that Al lot of times they agreed to other concessions were deals because they thought they were getting those benefits.
There's a third category here though people who may not qualify for Medicare and they may also not -- to get into these exchanges.
Is it possible the Detroit -- other cities can actually -- these retirees with zero health care options that I don't think that was the purpose of obamacare.
All trenchant points and I think that that an Alice analysis pointed to the fact that yes there will be.
A lot of these -- workers or retirees who have nowhere else to go I think it's going to be huge.
Headache and faking it for years to come.
At and then of of course were operating under this fantastical assumption that these health care exchanges are going to be -- -- working at some point if any remember.
That HHS announced that delay is in the dead of night out right before a vacation weekend.
That they were not going to be ready by 24 team which we all won't do many of us.
From the very get -- this whole thing has been a huge charade.
Blowing up in their faces in the only -- course they have left is to plead with Hollywood celebrities to sell it to be delusional young people.
Global -- we'll see if it -- and it's right Scott or anywhere else Michelle thank you.
You bet Shannon.
