-- ago president Barack Obama.
Was -- But he's not there anymore.
On his way to meet with -- senate Democrats.
Now having just met with house Democrats.
And they're going to be talking about pushing the president's agenda that's true.
Or at least surviving through coming fight over fiscal issues.
With the Republicans.
Some sixty days from now.
This is power play and I and Chris Farrell.
And the president is trying to rally Democrats today.
To stand strong as Republicans.
Are fighting amongst themselves -- what to do about the president's health -- what's new about.
The fiscal -- -- I'm sorry I'm getting my fiscal crises confused.
What to do about the -- to expire continuing resolution funding the government absence of -- budget and the debt ceiling it's all happening.
And the president is urging Democrats to stay the course.
And break the fever among Republicans can't he do that.
But maybe we could find somebody who knows maybe we could find people who know about that right and people who know about that and I know it's true because they write about it.
Our Juan Williams he is aside from being.
Magic -- he is also -- Fox News political analyst.
He is also a columnist at the kill -- rights that rights and does cool stuff at Fox News Latino.
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- No I'm pretty -- we've invited you really get a new window box.
That would be -- yeah they're -- and how it goes I'd like staying here but it's fun to say -- box yeah.
Sounds very appealing.
It will also sound appealing to you know that Steve -- who's -- senior writer for the weekly standard.
Is here he is -- like a billion of you do follow bullets Stephen FK's.
They serve and you become an affront I guess I should ask you to nine million songs filings.
Oh yeah I did I say they yeah I'm -- right -- LA Atlanta exact why not take a hit.
All right so here's the question.
The president today and yes we will talk about.
And guys -- and Egypt and we will talk about all of that and by the way I should tell you senator Roger Wicker is going to be with the Slater show he's Republican from Mississippi.
And he will be here talk about why they think Ole miss actually is going to be good this year but in addition to that he will probably talk about some politics but the question gentlemen is this.
Com had a very revealing piece I thought today National Journal.
I quoted it in my column.
And it -- of -- peace with Charlie Cook had an assessment the other day.
And it's becoming clear.
2014 shaping up to be tough -- Democrats tough cycles the president's going -- to the hill today it's got to rally the troops one more time exit you know basically.
We got to -- cliff diving with me just one more time guys we got to stick together.
And the Republicans are in disarray.
Ted Cruz is fighting awareness.
Tom Coburn and Rand Paul's fighting with Chris Christie and they're all -- -- other shows if we can just -- together one more time.
We're gonna we're gonna break the back of this Republican opposition can he do it.
-- So indication that Republicans are ready to see the fight sure that they're repositioning cracked it.
Shred of light that you would point to is the very division that you mentioned at the top of the show Chris which is.
You see some of these fights taking place between the likes of Ted Cruz and -- establishment Republicans you see Republicans saying.
If it's -- doubt.
Trying to defund obamacare.
By blocking the budget -- you're gonna get it's an implosion.
That is -- to rebound to the benefit of Democrats and hurt Republicans at the polls you've had people including our own Charles Krauthammer.
Brit Hume the Republican strategist.
Fox contributor Karl Rove say a product that's just not Smart politics for Republicans -- On the other hand you have a hard -- Republicans who say this is a good fight and no reason for us to back away.
Slim and -- get to this discussion -- mentioning developments as it relates to the defining of Obama care.
You heard Ted -- laid out here on Monday.
But there's Tom Coburn.
Brings to sustain a substantial change to the argument today but pointing out Steve -- If the Republicans.
Were to shut down the government over that that obamacare would still get implemented.
Because in the -- he asked -- question of the congressional research service which is like.
The brain room for.
Congress like what happens death and the rules basically said the president has enough -- can go ahead and implement the law.
Affect what what it would do is because of the steady stream of mandatory spending that was in place before -- it would be like.
Turning -- -- close but the water would continue to run because there was water and those.
And I think he's right I -- it out -- -- I think that was known before but.
Certainly I think for Tom -- to have congressional research service lay it out in the way that they -- is helpful to people who are making the argument that he -- I would say I guess.
I think that that the effort from Mike Lee -- Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio and a few others.
I would say it's done more good than harm at this point.
Even if I think that that the better strategy.
Yeah I wrote -- They wrote about that and with my anyway right here it's good loses weekly standard I don't know if I'm allowed to show this -- -- -- Copyright is clear about issue right there's a weekly standard gathers a weekly standard article an excellent weekly standard article we've talked about this initiative -- recommend -- highly.
One also has a good piece -- -- in which.
One talks about what what you laid out about how Republicans are you do you think chasing their tails on this.
And that obamacare stuff -- interest.
And then I do also by the way punishing the president now only calls -- obamacare.
Like he's in he's just like -- and a lot of -- like act obamacare you've got it.
But for Democrats them and we understand the division of the road we've talked about that.
But among Democrats.
And here's what I wrote to them.
Her today that if you're sitting listening presence in your congress vision your hearing him talk then there's a -- Running in the back of your head and it says 44% job approval it says one point 7%.
GDP growth it says.
Point seven percent average approval rating for.
The health care law.
And it says generic congressional ballot GOP plus one.
This is significant because normally Democrats -- if you're gonna have a close house season.
-- it about a tie.
-- Democrats only run about five points ahead in the generic congressional ballot for Republicans to lead in the generic congressional ballot generally Republicans are gonna underperform -- that -- by three or four points.
And then what else old Georgia the state of Georgia says.
We need and they're not doing this in like a Rick Perry I'd like I hate you way they're doing it and like -- please help us weigh the health care law is.
Proving to be too expensive and hard to -- -- they're begging begging begging for a year delay can do it if you're 11 of those congressmen sitting there from a swing district or -- senator from a swing state.
Presidents like one more time let's jump to clip one more time are you thinking like I don't want -- deep -- something -- -- right now.
-- just aren't that many swing states after we -- our congressional districts were there and they're only about.
Thirty or 35 congressional districts is down used to be like a 100000000 and 35 districts and you know I think that by the way your piece was quite good and I think it played into the bringing peace which suggested that.
The president is basically buying into the idea look.
Republicans are all about obstruction they have stopped me from doing what I need to do they seemed to delight in the idea that we're gonna they're going to destroy the government.
So therefore -- -- -- it's not my legacy is not my fault it's -- properties finger pointing.
And what we're okay and at worst are -- have to say is Haley is your legacy.
And you're -- to have to get blamed because great presidents have to overcome I think you wrote or was it.
Knows when his point that -- -- like hers if Lincoln would have lost the civil war they wouldn't have said.
Play and I was tough as it doesn't matter and I did they tell you get the best you can but -- -- you don't you -- as a failure aren't.
Here's the contrary position contrary position as you look at the polling numbers for the congress.
I mean I think through the Wall Street Journal as I -- hill -- at the lowest in history.
The lowest in history and when they -- about obstruction I'm specifically obamacare a majority of the American people say.
Hey look it's gonna happen let's move on.
But that's not -- pick up almost everything that's about where crews and others are on this issue they're still.
You know like that what do they say -- the Japanese soldiers trapped in the hills still fighting the war after the armistice.
I don't I don't agree that are -- you look at polling on the are not in favor of -- funding even people who oppose the law the implementation of the law are not in favor of but there is such a deep and broad concern about.
Obama cared about the implementation.
That it would be I think an an historic mistake if Republicans were not to include.
Any attempt to stall -- delay the implementation dignity of the individual mandate also the exchange subsidies.
If they don't make that part of the argument that they take the president this fall on on either the CR preferably in my view that the the debt ceiling discussions.
I think it'll be a huge mistake and what's been surprising trees have been reporting on this is there seemed to be more Republicans.
In the house and senate.
She basically share your view then I would've thought people who basically say he's the president he's going to be there until 2016.
So we shouldn't do anything at all and I and I think there's a big difference between that view and a -- that says he's the president he's going to be there -- 2016 but we can still.
Pushing things to stall -- to delay it.
If if you believe -- -- -- that it's a disaster that has -- Anthony Kennedy no right Winger argued it changed the relationship between.
Fundamentally changes the relationship between the state and the citizen you should fight for -- and I think Republicans should should make that fight and and take it to the president.
-- our breaking news breaking news highway breaking news in fact there from -- -- marriage whatever Capitol Hill producers say at this.
The senate has voted to table that's not good.
Table -- Europe's supporting the bill it's not good to table the amendment that would have cut off the aid.
From Rand Paul 86.
-- -- 86 to thirteen holes an amendment to defund Egyptian aid goes down.
Ray and Paul was joined by Mitch McConnell not surprising.
John soon John Grasso.
Jim -- and and it's.
-- NC so there you go we'll talk more about Egypt aid aid to the Middle East and other stuff when we come back so stick around.
Is news to you.
There's -- feedback I can.
All right that is news to you that says that the senate stands in recess -- 1 o'clock.
Having failed to act so that sort of they're -- sort of what they do then this is power play.
And our jam is entertaining and educating you about the American political system.
Juan Williams and Steve -- are with us even now.
And this and that is stands in recess because.
They just voted to essentially.
Through negative referendum.
Continue aid to Egypt one you had some.
Insightful and spicy commentary about what the administration is doing with Egypt what we're doing with Egypt with the United States -- with -- And no Rand Paul's.
Amendments -- -- You can see by those who joined with him.
And you can see by the -- sentiment across the board nobody in Washington is particularly happy about this the current.
Condition and -- among our putative allies need.
Know there's a tremendous divide over the idea that we're supposed to be supporting democracy and -- -- support democracy.
How can you in fact now literally for a second time.
Be involved in what amounts to -- As the basis for ruling Egypt and in this case you have Morsi.
Who's been ousted as being kept I don't know where.
In prison -- jail yeah bush is in jail I thought he was in some club and anyway I thought they arrested him pending Steve knows they tell him that they left him for his own safety is -- the line that might jump finish.
Well that's what mrs.
Williams yeah exactly detaining you and I have season I don't kill you really look back to back.
-- here's my feeling about this actress yes.
How are you supposed to -- to negotiate with people who have guns right and who -- like you know you say -- you can protest but they keep trying to push out.
And expand -- the perimeter of their protests.
And then their bottom line their bottom line is -- let's make a deal because we in the Muslim Brotherhood understand democratic process and we want.
To have a stable government none of their their their position is we want more -- reinstated -- and guess what.
Here is my bottom line most egyptians do not -- -- -- reinstated.
They think that what -- Muslim Brotherhood is doing is essentially.
Government and democracy.
And -- Egypt into an Islamic state and they don't want it and not only that they've ruined the economy and they have not delivered in terms of government service immediate.
Wasn't exactly Hong Kong cannot -- economy it's going into the situations that I didn't have much cushion.
Steve -- Obama doctrine for the Middle East basically shapes up.
As a a transitional.
Supporting transitional theocracy.
Palate cleanser between.
Western backed strongman.
Hosni Mubarak in Egypt.
Then you have -- cracks moderates the Democrats that takeover and then hand off power to -- old.
Republic's small -- small -- small.
But we haven't seen that is that isn't the most charitable generous description you bomb -- are well at least it's by that -- what they are -- -- guess what they want to say it assumes that there is strategy I think the fundamental.
I -- not even I'm not being facetious I'm not you know clueless you make it just catches catch I think it's -- Total ad hoc policy making I think there is no strategy.
If if they actually -- -- moderate Islamist -- were supportive of democracies in the region -- they would have been more supportive -- what was going on in Iraq.
And they -- or Iran more supportive of what happened in Iran in 2009.
They weren't they there is no strategy I think that's fundamentally the problem here is.
Doesn't know what to do so originally today they oppose the -- -- -- of Hosni Mubarak then they support it.
They don't really do much after he's gone they don't -- eight Friday did help the pro western types on the ground.
In Egypt and any substantive way.
Mohamed Morsi wins the presidency and an impasse in our ambassador to Egypt decide basically cut off discussions with all of the -- Democrats the good people in Egypt.
Which leads everybody in the country to believe that we are for the -- government it's.
It's a complicated mess it was it look as messy no matter what.
The Obama administration is it -- we're just gonna have every segment and our -- that relates to the medley stories that say it's complicated mess where -- There are going to be eight seconds long.
It's glad to guys we thank you bat.
Question for you Internet and question for you guys do.
Grand bargains how boring and this is sort of like a Denny's Grand Slam how small.
Can you make it can you at hand can you take the eggs away what does it take to be a grand bargain the president says a grand bargain could just -- On corporate taxes.
In exchange for some domestic spending may be the game companies pay another fifty bill.
And maybe they spend it on some roads.
So is defining down.
A grand bargain -- -- possible success we'll talk about that with US senator Roger Wicker -- Mississippi when we come back.
If folks to Washington and -- really won a grand bargain.
How about a grand bargain for middle class jobs.
How about a grand bargain for middle.
-- -- -- I don't.
I don't wanna go through the same old arguments where I propose an idea there -- and just say no because my big.
-- at a campaign rally at an Amazon shipping warehouse.
Chattanooga Tennessee yesterday that's our -- welcome back so what about grand -- and bargaining.
And is what president has proposed in -- a grand bargain.
Roger Wicker is -- Republican senator from the magnolia state the great state of Mississippi senator welcome.
Thank you very much good to be here.
Are right now.
The president says he's not recycling old ideas that he's come up with a new idea which is a trade off in -- Corporations would pay a one time penalty.
Two in exchange for a lower future tax rate on corporate income.
And then that money derived from the penalty would be used for domestic spending programs do you guys are you guys interest it.
What will let me say first of all of our nostalgic about that.
2012 campaign the speech yesterday whether it would it would have been nice cure for that because it was a campaign.
Rally no doubt about it.
What the president says it is we will raise taxes.
On businesses own job creators.
We will call it corporate tax reform.
It'll -- us a bunch of revenue and will spend it on sort of the stimulus lite.
Like we did in in 2009 we know the result of that was not to jump start the economy so it really seems like the president's negotiating with himself.
Earlier he wanted to do corporate tax reform.
And make it revenue neutral I think that's a good idea but this is far from that.
Right so we're getting ready as we know it did you guys give -- -- To go back to where you're from.
For -- guest when you come back things are going to be we're going to be pretty close to that edge here in Washington we've got.
The continuing resolution funding the government in the absence of budget about to expire we've got the debt ceiling will be triggered.
At some point in the weeks to come.
And we've got the implementation of the president's health law Democrats are the president's trying to unify Democrats today.
But Republicans are showing some division on these questions about how to approach these big issues what's your take.
Oh well there're there are about twelve Republicans who who think that the implicit threat of government shut down.
This is a way to to repeal obamacare -- and -- if I could shut the government down.
Or six months and be assured that obamacare would go away I'd be willing to pay that price.
But that's not gonna happen and to me -- what the result would be.
Probably to lose the election for Republicans -- more Americans against us and we would still have obamacare and there -- there are.
Waves to to attack Obama care.
But one of those ways is to elect more Republicans.
And get a new president 2060.
And in terms of what you can do we were discussing this series one Williams and Steve -- a minute ago but the question is for Republicans what are the -- -- short.
Trying for or.
A a short of that what are those intermediate steps that could be take.
What will we don't have very many -- and our quiver and that's because we lost the presidency in November of 2012.
And we still have a democratic and controlled senate.
But so we'd like to stake the Democrats out.
-- some of the most unpopular parts.
Of the obamacare law.
Get the -- record.
As now they stand on.
Tone of the tax increases.
Them mandate the illegal postponement of parts of the -- justice and the president things like that but.
Lost this issue for four years in the presidential race I'm -- that that to say that.
But the fact is shutting the government down puts us a step backwards not a step forward do wanna talk about what we do in.
Even in September getting really just.
-- either the senator all of a sudden.
Are you there senator cannot help time I'm here okay and you're saying you do wanna talk about what.
Well you know we only have the house is only -- session nine days in September we need to act quick.
There are some Republicans.
Negotiating with a White House chief of staff.
And I hope they're successful in getting us some relief.
From the arbitrary across the board sequestration cuts.
What the president needs to do in that regard is agree that the overall budget spending caps adopted.
In the budget control electrical mistake we're not gonna breach those spending -- we fault too hard.
To cut spending.
You know the budget controlling what we willing to do.
Is negotiate with the president on some mandatory spending changes that he has said in the past.
He's willing to negotiate -- And maybe we can.
Come up with a little more discretionary money for our defense.
-- -- our people in uniform in and for some of the things that have been subject to arbitrary budget cut.
Democratic -- last thing I want to ask you they miss is debuting.
-- this throwback retro powder blue football helmet what is a much anticipated football season will the powder blue affect the plot.
I think what's really going to affect the play is our top five recruiting class.
-- last year we're well on our way to repeating that.
Four for the next football season I feel real good about the Ole miss rebels for this coming city.
Somebody's somebody's got to play.
The mountaineers in the national championships -- I don't go to domestic senator -- thank you I'm for good all right we thank you for making time for us today everybody today.
Hit a quarterback you what about you said a lot of stuff but we are busy I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry but we heard from Jake Greg -- -- -- said sorry what is a moderate Islamist.
-- a fair question.
Have -- in 1953 says all I know is that a grand bargain is not something you make with yourself.
That's just wishing that you can't make -- Denny's Grand Slam yourself I think we should point out.
Take points out that it is illegal in this is -- it is illegal.
For us to get aid to a country when it's taken over by -- so we're just saying that there's a hotel in place in Egypt but it got there I guess by -- store or stork delivered it it wasn't a coup that put them on today in place and it's only temporary jobs.
And here's my favorite comment of the day.
Comes from on Twitter Charles -- says I've followed you at -- dire -- Because it's the American thing to do but also online viewers need to do this Charles acts how right you are how right you are and if you did follow me -- -- firewall.
You already have my column for the day and you wouldn't be joining the fun right here so have a great day on the hunt Jonathan Hunt is up next and now.
As we like to do every day.
We leave you with the word from our French -- -- -- how many times as he used the word jump start I thought the idea.
The only nine stimulus over 800 billion was to jump start.
The economy and meet.
At a certain point every time you say you want to read jump start.
Cannibalize their all of the past ones worth.
