I -- -- -- welcome Richard -- board president citizens crime commission of New York City.
And one -- Control -- been confusing and controlling grown -- and -- I think which is now the Brady campaign.
And you but -- stories out today about the amount of gun sales -- take place on -- unregulated.
Thousands and thousands of guns many of them assault weapons and there's no regulation whatsoever in the NRA and congress.
Can't do anything about.
Well unfortunately that's exactly right and I think it's one more outrageous example.
I'll be inability to -- congress to tackle this issue.
You know the United States congress has a moral obligation playmakers and -- -- to do whatever they can to protect the American people.
We -- Full well what policies will stop.
Criminals from getting guns and one of those policies we just stop.
These Internet sales and stop a lot of these back these -- shows sales so there's no background checked and that is not.
The few that aren't just -- -- -- that 90% of the American people half.
Yet congress for reasons I think we understand full well and -- -- three initials the NRA yeah.
Refuses to respect the will of the American people.
So we were very significant question here at -- which is who -- the congress represent the American people -- this very narrow specialist.
And you've got conservative Democrats like Joseph -- -- West Virginia Pickens who live in rural districts perhaps who are probably more pro gun than some.
Libertarian -- I should say perhaps more liberal Republicans from other parts -- more urban areas.
That's correct and the and the and the reason they are supportive even though -- from conservative states.
Undoubtedly gun -- himself probably lifelong gun -- His -- that they understand.
-- you can have recalled regulations of guns designed to stop criminals.
And those with mental health issues from getting firearms.
While still allowing law abiding citizens to get -- there's nothing incompatible those two positions and these these public officials understand.
The key -- is to keep the pressure up at the grassroots level when I was running the Brady campaign.
We can't we did pass the Brady bill to ban on assault weapons and the ban on large -- clips and the NRA which -- -- strong -- they'd just as much money.
And we did deal but actually we did it by organizing at the grassroots level and applying incredible pressure on members of congress and on individual senators.
And that's what -- the bills through and we've got to do that again.
This is like running.
-- -- 150 local congressional races around the country.
These -- building to be run locally.
The group that third way came out with a study though it has got a lot of news today and they found for example that this.
Web site arms list dot com is like a classified site like Craig's list only for guns and that's where.
They do like 151000 guns were for sale in certain states according to the study more than 5000 of them -- -- the -- numbers before.
More than 151005000.
Of which are.
Automatic weapons and nearly 2000 me -- from prospective buyers specifically looking to buy from private sellers where -- no background check now there -- laws.
Which somehow cover some of this like you can't sell to somebody you know might be -- criminal right but it's hard to enforce that.
Boy it's impossible to enforce -- -- there's no record keeping.
And there's no verification of the information that somebody is giving you.
But but moreover there's no obligation on a private -- to make any inquiry if to a private buyer.
So somebody can contact somebody offers this list and say I -- -- buy for thirty.
45 caliber weapons and that's -- go through.
How was there any questions after that's outrageous and I guarantee you.
I guarantee you it's not just law abiding citizens buying guns that list I'll -- -- criminals going and getting -- -- -- -- And unfortunately ATF at the moment does contracted information we don't know how -- guns that are originating and Internet sales.
Are bleeding over into the illegal market we should find that out there will be a valuable piece.
I don't understand the reason the NRA whose position has been well.
The bad guys -- get guns anyway so why bother doing this which we get in the way of law abiding citizens getting guns hitting is that argument we can't make any laws because the bad guys will break them.
The NRA's never met a gun control -- likes.
And later on kindly -- safety likes a one time then they have they gotten more.
Unreasonable in some of the stuff.
Probably they may have gone from being unreasonable to being very readable but they've never in reasonable on on this at all.
The -- view was that any gun control law passed.
He's one step down the slippery slope.
To banning all guns and the reason they do that the reason they say this is truly a band movement if they want to keep their membership inflamed.
So that's their membership will not support the kind of laws that would protect the American people's.
But which changing his gun owners are beginning to the first time.
To really come into this debate and say we understand.
But you can actually -- before.
Every -- regulations over guns and still allow law abiding citizens to purchase content.
I think game changer in my book the more gun -- speak out about.
-- better -- you would think they would speak -- as -- they don't want -- bad a bad reflection on them they don't want that great evil.
And doings of those who have bad intentions to improve reflect -- -- -- beyond the the NRA there for portal to generate -- percent gun -- I think -- -- percent manufacturers.
And gun owners themselves.
Feel just as bad about the sandy hook about the -- take place every day about the people to get hurt every day.
They care just as much is long -- are still.
But they need to speak out they need to reach their members of congress and say hey let's see what we can to stop the bad guys from getting guns and but don't interfere with our ability to get a -- The NRA allies and -- we -- the NRA -- say those things like the government will confiscate your guns.
There's going to be a gun grand.
They -- they've lied even since even in the first administration all of Obama's first term.
When this wasn't so much of an issue -- Obama's gonna do this in another thank you see we were right look what Obama's doing now which he probably wouldn't have been re reacting to and there not been.
The sandy hook.
Tragedy in the first place -- probably wouldn't be on the agenda right now.
No and I hope the president continues to speak out on this issue we need presidential leadership it's incredibly important -- not listen this is a very tough fight.
Fighting for good reform -- has always been a very tough for you and I've been talking -- this this year after years.
And you won't you watched very closely the progress of the Brady -- the ban on assault weapons.
And you know how tough those votes for.
But we're back and we're back in that same situation but we have -- -- changes now.
Gabby Giffords the congresswoman was -- Phoenix has now playing a predominant role in this that's very very important.
Just like yeah Brady did back in the same time that you're running the -- became the Brady camp.
Exactly who were trying to -- that's exactly right.
But the other game changer -- we have Mayor Bloomberg who has really helped lead to fight on this issue has revitalized the movement.
He's promising to spend bad the other -- matched dollar for dollar so that will neutralize a lot of their financial damage.
So once you do that the fight goes back to the grassroots and again -- we've got to win.
And that's where people like Gabby Giffords and Mayor Bloomberg can be very helpful.
What all the other victims joining joining handed -- -- law enforcement and we have.
Gun owners gun owners are part of the 90% of the American people that support this legislation.
Richard thanks so much good -- again my -- their time.
And I -- so much Richard -- board president citizens crime commission New York City.
