Good morning -- I am Chris dialogue -- are your -- cuts from Fox News first.
Right off the top what's your question Mr.
After a circuitous path two.
Come before the American people this evening at 9 PM.
To make a case -- miss something in Syria.
The situation is evolving quickly as Vladimir Putin and the Russians make an offer to be serious protector the president says he's into it but not that into it.
What's he had to -- the night.
Who knows which brings us of course -- second -- got the senate -- Syria vote.
That is Vladimir -- shaking hands with -- -- because we owe it to you we think you should have that.
Whenever possible Internet but it is Vladimir Putin's plan.
That has the senate that Harry Reid has withdrawn.
A test vote on the president's war plan for Syria.
What will happen in congress we'll tell you know.
How about this gun rights are on the line.
They're having a referendum.
On two senate seats.
A recall election -- two senate seats in Colorado today state senate seats these are lawmakers from.
Pro gun districts who voted on the State's tough new gun control law off.
If they are not out.
What message Willits and what message -- and if they're allowed to stay.
Now at 43% you remember the 47% -- -- issue -- Internet Mitt Romney said so during the 2012 election.
I -- I am at 47% who don't pay taxes.
It there -- the fact.
He got it wrong but forty sat in that year 47%.
Of American households.
-- -- only 47% were paying taxes it's dropped.
Again now it's down to 43%.
As more Americans get tax subsidy get money from the government and don't pay taxes.
It changes the discussion in the country I promised and last but definitely not least for you -- linguists at home.
Is it frosting or -- -- It basement or the seller.
Joshua -- -- North Carolina State University.
Has done a cool interactive map that tells you.
What people say where including -- -- -- do you call it well it papering somebody's house -- TP being.
You already have that if you were signed up for Fox -- first in your inbox.
It's free it's awesome I love making it.
Love reading it.
And we're gonna talk about it all right now on power black.
This is something that is not new I've been discussing this with present -- and for some time now the last time.
We were to G-20 meeting in -- travels.
Last year I suggested the need for the United States -- to work together to deal -- this particular problem.
And that was President Obama last night sitting down with our -- Fox News fox news's Chris Wallace.
Saint yeah Vladimir it would have been talked about -- -- for a long time good -- surprised.
No surprise here this is in fact -- and I am in fact -- star moment welcome back Internet.
Now it's getting really Willie as a relates trying to put the serious stuff across the line for the president what do you say tonight what does he need to say tonight.
One of the Republicans who has stood up for the president with some conditions on his call for.
-- authorization of a strike against Syria is Mike Pompeo he is.
Eight cans and yes he is a member of the select intelligence committee.
Yes he is a West Point graduate and yes he's definitely a welcome -- -- congressman.
Chris great to be really thanks for having me on today.
Okay you cause ripples when you and Tom -- congressman from Arkansas.
And an op Ed in the Washington Post saying hey look.
You may not the president needs a better plan on Syria needs do other stuff.
But it's time for congress to act.
To authorize him -- to -- anyway.
His use of military force against his -- regime in Syria.
That was over last week -- is that where you still are.
You know Chris.
If that's evolved a great deal since than and I spend a week in the Middle East in that intervening time as well.
I'm but I have to say a couple things.
What's what's really important is that as America considers this that they have all the facts right I've heard heard members of congress talk about the fact that.
We don't have any vital national interest in Syria that's just false and -- in America has enormous interest throughout the Middle East we've been working hard to protect them for an awfully long time.
We need to continue to do that that -- -- -- -- the second one is an and I understand this did they say well we don't wanna go to war.
The war has found us President Obama says that all the time says -- -- on the run in the wars winding down.
It's just wrong it's just false there's the global jihadist to want to kill us and that's where I think represent -- -- come from.
We tried to engage this administration over the past week and a half to come up with a strategic solution.
They've got to an outcome that was in the best interest for America not a shot across the bow out of pin -- -- some little feckless effort.
But a real serious comprehensive plan that would protect America's national interest throughout the Middle East and I'm still hopeful we can do that.
I'm up watch what's happening with the Russians and Vladimir Putin.
I'm anxiously with the president's -- that it says about that as well tonight couple were going to be engage in this struggle.
Against radical islamists in the Middle East for years and years to come so what happens in the next day or two is important.
But we all need to recognize that we have interest there we've got to protect them and America can do that if we get a good plan and frankly a commander in chief was -- that skewed against them.
Now a congressman the senate Harry Reid has pulled the vote in the senate.
As soon to -- of the discussion can continue.
It was looking.
Unlikely to pass in the senate it is never looked likely to pass and as we've heard estimates of as many as 300 votes against authorizing the president's.
Many of those come from conservative Republicans who say that they distrust the president's plane and strategy for serious so much.
That authorizing him or empowering him to make a strike would only lead.
Yeah I've I've heard that argument a number of times from them good solid conservatives.
Look some of those divide and different gaps some of those of folks here are just isolationists -- just wanna.
Go away come back to America pretend assault wasn't wasn't something that impacted us back -- just wrong about it it's.
It's a battle that we're gonna have to continue to engage in whether we have Republican presidents.
-- Democrat president.
There -- others to pick a different units that I'd be willing to go engaged but I simply don't trust this president you know I should I share that.
View I don't trust the president to execute this plan well either it's why I wanted to engage indeed I was over the White House yesterday we had a a very direct conversation.
About what the president ought to say tonight.
But more importantly what the president ought to do if he were to engage militarily in Syria.
It's not enough to -- a couple missiles not enough to do that and so.
I think as a member of congress we can mock the president we can make fun of -- we can say he's terrible commander in chief.
But we have an independent obligation.
And that obligation is -- step forward.
With our vision for what that foreign policy -- to look like and if we just -- -- feet and rant rave and say he's awful on the -- -- give -- -- power.
We run the risk of doing nothing.
In the Middle East and doing nothing will get Christian minorities killed.
All throughout the region.
Doing nothing we'll let Hezbollah grow.
Doing nothing will give al-Qaeda another playground.
To go foment terrorism against us in the homeland and our soldiers and sailors and airmen but you've got folks coming in out of Iraq sponsored by Iran.
And we -- -- Hezbollah has killed blogs I read it has what killed many Americans like coming into Iraq over the past years.
This this is something we've got to.
He engaged -- we've got to be thoughtful about -- it's for that reason I spent that time with the White House that's why I went to the Middle East that.
To see for myself if we could find rebel forces that we could get behind in a way that would make a material difference to American national security -- And if you knew where the Chisholm trail went.
If you would know him already but if you don't there he is Mike -- congressman from Kansas congressman we thank you for making time for us thank you very much Chris have a great day.
-- -- Now when you get confused when you get in -- when you get to wondering about how it's all going to work itself out.
Who should you turn to whom should -- -- I asked Fred Barnes that's -- because he knows.
Fred Barnes it is.
-- I've got to get it right -- you I don't wanna get -- wrong for all the weekly standard magazine weekly standard magazine aren't familiar with that but you have -- the -- I wanna make sure -- -- -- title -- senior -- executives.
I'm always down.
I'm afraid I'm always robbing you under an excellent one of the things it is a long tradition in journalism is called title in price inflation but I will say this friend.
Whatever they're doing with your title they did and you go to Australia to cover I'd be very interesting election right so it's not all -- well we're conservative magazine we hope the globe to find out what Gaza and they win and indeed he did in Australia.
And -- to the other side of the barrier -- you go and we just as a side note on your -- and he's a great piece.
Does this do you think suggests a return of sort of this anglos -- When it comes to do what used to be known as the global war on -- that you think Australia will be eight -- -- member of that.
Coalition and gun yet yet definitely -- -- -- these other prime minister who will be sworn in this -- is very pro American.
He's actually a social conservative he's someone who would -- in.
None in American politics very easily and he'd probably be a leader in the Republican Party so.
They very much depend on the -- security umbrella of the United States you know the Marines know -- drowning her station in northern Australia so.
The -- there will be greater than ever and remember Australia shows up.
It's not just England that shows up in wars in Iraq and Korea and not Afghanistan Australians do -- We're so on this question you know and the Internet news the congressman caused quite.
-- stir here on the Internet talking about the Christians in Syria that's actually an argument.
So there are -- there's -- there's a substantial Christian minority in a minority in the minority.
In Syria just is there isn't because.
And one of the things in the -- -- government is saying with the help of Russia.
This Islamist rebels and Syria -- kill and and -- down the churches of the Syrian Christians he -- by the with the islamists have done in Egypt guy and that only this government can protect.
Well -- Ali it is a very tricky question because indeed the Assad government has protected the Christians -- -- What 1015% of the population in Syria.
And it was a little our government that protected the Coptic.
Other Coptic Christians.
And about ten million of them in Egypt then and we see what happens when those dictators what we saw it -- in Egypt and what may indeed.
Happen in Syria as well so well.
If nobody else does -- the United States is gonna have to find a way.
It ensures that if Assad falls.
That Christians are not slaughtered as a result -- right now let's take a listen to.
They hate the most than -- moment yesterday from house speaker John Kerry -- Nicholas.
You can turn over every single bit of this chemical weapons to the international community in the next week.
-- don't fault.
-- without delay.
And allow faithful and total accounting for that.
But he isn't about to do it and it can't be done.
Now that was out he's not past victories this season secretary of state but he was -- and he was joking.
It is as big as they made clear immediately in the state front immediately -- that was rhetorical statement he was joking.
The Russians though said okay we're -- what do you think about it how on earth I called it the Chauncey -- style -- policy from being there you say something people think his brilliant and it works anyway.
In his foreign policy by -- -- say something goofy and the Russians who are very Smart to jump on it.
-- -- There were two very true sentences that secretary -- said.
And they were one that the -- -- the Assad government won't do it and two it can't be done that's why this is the night.
-- -- that the ridiculous proposal how in the world are you gonna get all of all the the chemical weapons.
And weapons of mass destruction find them in Syria.
In the -- of -- civil war.
I mean it it's just impossible it's totally impractical and to see.
Though the White House now really taking it seriously they didn't at first.
None but now they're taking it seriously no doubt the president -- we'll talk about it tonight easily could -- basically claimed credit for it.
-- he included -- talking about this for a long time.
And good but it will have well it'll never.
-- it'll never come to pass slowly do.
It will delay any action by the president.
Four weeks and weeks and reducing once more.
That is called out of readiness.
And you want ready to military readiness peak military and don't already this.
We have -- a week ago Saturday.
-- and then they'll they'll the president.
The other -- -- all mom it it may not come again and -- he did it makes an attack he even when these negotiations over this the Russian proposal.
-- fall apart it makes an attack.
Any sort less likely.
-- -- impossible yeah Fred do you care what America thanks.
Yeah I -- good let's we have some holes that go to that end here -- go into your first and this is of fresh.
Just fresh from the farms and Fox News poll.
President Obama's handling of Syria approve.
Now it's 49% in day it was 37% disapprove 60% now 40% in May twelfth.
And second one US using US military -- in Syria to degrade the chemical weapons capacity well 42% say maybe.
Send a message to Iran 36% say okay.
Punish chemical weapons 36%.
And helping anti government -- 27%.
-- that's low and then here's.
Let's -- the last one do you believe the Syrian government use chemical weapons on its own citizens 66% say yes so basically your take away here is.
American voters are art.
They think he used chemical weapons they think that -- continues chemical weapons but they're not that interested in going forward to do what the president wants which is to punish them.
For doing well.
Now for the polls -- unequivocal.
I mean America.
The two thirds of America or maybe more is against any military assault on Syria have any -- and I suppose.
While they have to take that into consideration.
Have to leave they have to do things that they are in the what they -- in the the national interest of the country that are morally correct.
And go ahead and do them despite.
At least temporary public opinion.
And night but I'm afraid they'll though that the president he's been paralyzed for a number of reasons.
-- -- -- Any best I -- your euphemism by the way his circuitous path yes but let's -- Korea that's nice for our hair totally chaotic chaotic yet physically that -- alone with the president I think.
It really doesn't want to bomb Syria and is grasping at anything that will.
And exit strategy -- write it gets an exit strategy he wants without ever having -- Entry strategy but if the goal is that there's this sort of elegance to the into the madness.
Which is that.
If the only reason that the president put forward was to save face on the Red Line because when you boil it down that's essentially what we've been talking about.
Because we all know that if the president used a phrase other than red line and he -- theories serious or we would be looking at a close right we would no way he talked about this.
That -- the point was to save face if -- lets Obama stay offense then the goal has been achieved.
And I don't want Obama saving face whether he it was just an offhand comment about a red line.
He made that comment the world took it seriously.
Even if a lot of people in America didn't it's there you have to deal with it.
And you have to deal with the bully and you have to protect American interest which a rather large as the congressman said in the Middle East and you don't do -- with some.
And -- and I think here was the another problem that the congressman Hayes was that any.
India can breath taking these small right now raid won't have the kind of impact he could happen with a more robust body.
You're right John Kerry calling for an attack so little you hardly even know it's there it's like you -- it is if you whisper quiet.
This is the opposite of shock and off if you imagine Winston Churchill so I know everything about you Bobby are you won't even notice -- -- like -- you like and acts buzzing around your.
So -- here's the question.
What is it when the president the president is gonna come out -- he's gonna say some stuff he's gonna talk about.
He's gonna take some credit for the diplomatic progress and -- never.
But for a congressman Pompeo and four others in congress.
They're not -- and activists are whatever he says tonight they're gonna let this one go for a good long while running.
Then and -- the president -- claim credit but we know there was one person who is for the winner right now.
It's so glad we're -- you know he steps up and says hi I'm glad -- -- I'm here to help -- everybody in this picture -- shaken hands with the walrus please stand -- Fred Barnes you.
He is the executive editor of the weekly standard don't forget it.
Ever and I want anymore problems but I tell you -- are you are you very gracious colleagues and we thank you so much for making time for us today thanks to help.
For heaven you're that much smarter now Internet that just happens okay you're going to get smarter still and you will be entertained more because two of your favorite analyst Brad -- -- day waiting in the wings to talk about this.
Why does the president want -- what's he gonna say what does he actually say what would they advised him to say.
A primetime media address the president hasn't hasn't given one of those for more than two years so when he comes into America's living -- what's he gonna -- we've got to people who know or at least know what -- -- -- -- So stick around.
Is a scene from one of your very favorite primetime television shows So You Think You Can Dance.
And that's what you won't be watching for at least the first half hour the second half hour tonight.
As President Obama takes to the airwaves.
And this is power -- welcome back so why is present preempting your dancing show.
-- -- -- you like to watch that why is he doing it what will he say in its place.
Guess who knows or at least and god knows what they tell them to do two of the very smartest folks that we know.
You know and like I am assured by your friendly tweets Debbie -- she is democratic strategist yes she's president of the two strategies.
And she is we should point out.
It's bound to the dean of the house Democrat John -- from Michigan and -- The red Blake meant he is yes -- former deputy assistant to president George W.
Bush Republican strategist campaign operative kind of person who makes governments front and stuff but also -- More smoothly.
And professor at Georgetown University.
Professor welcome thank -- okay so the president is going out tonight he hasn't done one of these.
In June 2011.
Isn't that an oval address for I mean four years or something through for the last -- I remember was when they couldn't stop the oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico.
He hasn't done one of these since 2000 -- in 2000 -- it was quite simple.
We're coming home from Afghanistan.
At every speechwriter -- if -- I was like I want that one every speech writer likes to write that one.
Tonight's going to be tougher Debbie what's he gonna say -- well.
I think he's going to try -- Build the case to the American people about why he does think that we do need to take some action in Syria it's important speech he understands that he -- can people.
I think if you live a very complicated district we have liberals in -- -- Tea Party members down.
-- rivers and Arabs in Dearborn in it is the only time you'll ever see all three of them agree on anything anything they are country.
You can't train wreck and Hillsdale and Ann Arbor very seldom do those is that -- diagram shows it's yes and asking the members that are speaking to his staff into the various -- offices are saying to them.
It's not there at the supports not going to -- until the case but now.
-- because Vladimir Putin rookie of the walrus does not have to.
Asked for an immediate action right he can say well we're looking at this and I'd like congress -- like recruiting him for a mortgage he can -- like congress eventually.
To pre authorized me to strike Syria but right now we're watching and waiting to see what my friend -- was one in Russia will do.
-- a -- -- -- sit on fox that Putin holds the cards that he could smear really announced because of the Syrian interest if he can control season account for the weapons.
He's done himself dictator is also done a -- -- favor.
Obama if he's Smart.
Well -- on television tonight and say that.
Take Harry Reid's.
-- and -- we're gonna stand down from taking military action military action still may be needed.
But we're gonna give the opportunity for this offer of the Russians to secure seizing control the weapons and now.
And -- that was a sure thing.
A couple days ago the president.
I want congress to deliberate -- -- to congress.
Whether they are going to take the house is gonna take Harry Reid's lead -- stand down the house and let this play out the president is not gonna back down.
From the need to attack Syria if in fact.
There isn't any what he deems to be a diplomatic solution now -- you may know a couple members of the house.
Andy few if they were running from this thing at eight dad's friend in the house already Hussein will let the senate do it but if it's not Boehner had all been declared.
Unless something dramatic changes the house is mean and take this thing up they're just gonna stay away from it and hope and -- -- -- hope the president attacks on his own.
But just stay out of this thing.
This is never come into this -- with this.
Well I think if you look I've never seen members be more reflective every routes them.
I'm Justine seemed to be united as a foreign -- -- even some of the -- -- to.
Who are being it being pretty vocal.
They are not comfortable -- where they are -- right now.
I think that -- speaker Boehner has tried to be very responsible in is.
Handling of this I think a lot of members have been very disturbed -- -- that case is just -- not been built Democrats and Republicans have.
Said that but I think that in the end the majority of the house and senate know it's important that we we as a nation in a country have to be unite it.
In foreign policy to other countries -- are going to see how some of this plays out.
Betty you are right so often -- I have to say this congress looks like it does not want it looks like he wants to say so far away from this thing.
I mean but -- -- the president to rescue.
When they want to do is to be able -- -- and it isn't something they -- -- -- but but but Brad did Euro bought both of your old -- -- bush.
-- -- -- -- And one of -- movement Vernon where you do -- thing and then you say to the American people.
You don't like it you may not fully understand it I'm telling you it's the right thing to do and I'm gonna tell you why presidents when it comes to these sort of foreign interventions have generally found it to be much better -- for.
Forgiveness than permission.
And you know -- -- my fellow Americans even as we speak coalition forces have engaged targets within.
Fill in the blank.
-- Third World regime.
And we want -- guarantee swift victory for the forces of good justice.
That's what congress would like to get behind the president -- right.
Actually good presence -- lead us into -- they don't plead innocent.
-- president -- really is no eating occasion the American people are not bombing.
The -- -- ground work.
They're very patient and thorough and complete ground work building public support congressional support international -- we don't have any of those.
Following -- the president's.
I read every last word but I think his legacy is.
I remembered that people felt that they were lied to about 10 -- -- -- that we got the bush lied people -- we can't we can't do we stipulate.
That Democrats thought -- -- Iraq focusing Obama get off the -- both that we can all agree.
This has been different than anything -- did that for this is a totally new model for all of this stuff and it's getting weird out there.
Guys thanks for steering us through some of that we appreciate -- that we would hear your lie.
-- lied about lead us into war again I've watched fox you'll see Bradley -- do that again I guarantee you.
I also guarantee you.
That Jonathan Hunt is not in on the hunt today you don't like that but.
The good news is who's his filling yes this is still announced.
Gregg -- said yeah hey Gregg Jarrett that's that's fun.
You'll enjoy that -- will Smart you -- I promise.
And I can also tell you that now as we like to do every day.
We'll leave you with the word from our French -- us this is clearly a way to get Obama smoke politically.
The chances of these weapons being eliminated from Syria.
Our lesson in Chicago Cubs win -- World Series this year and they are now mathematically eliminate.
