Joined by congressman Devin unit is a Republican from California congressman wolf thank you what three day three -- -- it seems like so much longer.
First what your district what -- you cover up in the San Joaquin Valley Californians.
President -- would you like raisins you have to say you my friends do you must say she raises the kids you OK that's cool all right.
So you are and I've seen you on the television.
You are among those Republicans who says this is not working out and this is not the right way to do it and you are now being touted by Democrats and -- lists.
Of the guys and -- we -- just argument with Josh cross -- You may be outnumbered inside the Republican conference.
But it's still a pressure point for your leadership.
There seems to be some effectiveness though in the strategy when you hear Harry Reid saying things like he did yesterday in the strategy of throwing bills.
At the senate to vote on -- funding things that are desirable for Americans of all political stripes.
Is there any merit and letting the process work its way out.
Well innocent town people take your comments and they decide a breath and make things up -- what they think he says.
What what happened here when this was all laid out strategies laid out.
For months had warned people this was a very poorly thought out strategy because we just don't have the votes -- see this through so if you.
You know if you want to shut down the government take -- hostage.
You better have an in -- torturing the question how do you turn it back up right and so right now you know I'm actually fully supportive leadership in keeping.
You know with the strategy even though I think it's a battle want Coca but I'm not gonna go enforce -- leadership to now change gears -- our problem has been.
That we have.
A lot of Republicans here.
Ours who have not wanted to be part of the majority they continue to complain to leadership so after three years of this leadership finally said okay.
You wanna have your fight and -- -- only ever will support you guys on this program.
And so I worked all the way up until the government shut down to try to get steer -- clear from this this idea.
But I was unsuccessful so now.
We are in this fight and we're sending bills over this and we'll see you can either so it comes to do -- conclusion.
The analogy I made was that if you start a trip that you don't wanna take -- -- ironic that doesn't mean that you try to wreck the car basically that you said okay.
You were inside a conference that where the people who disagreed with you one out inside the discussion inside -- conference to undertake this.
Ongoing funding for the federal government on making changes to the health care law you caught -- as well go ahead.
It's not about making changes they send a lot of heart folks and we're gonna get rid of Obama -- and -- we're gonna just turn it off.
And you know that -- never that was never gonna -- for months.
Members of congress were at home and there were ads running.
Senator cruise was even doing this you know and now.
We are where we are where we don't have the votes to -- -- obamacare.
And so now we're trying to find a way out of this mess and it's very very difficult so I think at this point.
Republicans really need to look to senator -- and those that we got the strategy and say okay.
How do we get out and I'm waiting on senator -- to come to us and say oh -- here's the plan here's how it out.
In terms of if you were and I'm sure that your voice is heard inside the conference.
What are you advising other than to hear what's Ted Cruz has to say what are you advising your colleagues and I fellows to do that is in fact my advice -- cut the it's not the -- your original strategy and you argue against it right and you would read it all along with the strategy.
You don't just hand over the keys in the car and say all right here you go congressman you -- now it's your turn well.
The senator -- idea along with just a few Republicans who may need to come to us and -- -- what is the next step in your plan.
Now we sought more news today spirited action which is the political action arm and we've talked about it before The Heritage Foundation.
Only eight prominent conservative think tank is now them.
Arguably I guess most influential -- most potent conservative political action group that's led by Jim -- former senator from South Carolina.
They're announcing advised today.
They never buy ads against Democrats they almost never buy ads against Democrats they buy ads against Republicans.
Are you concerned that having spoken out about this kind of thing that you're gonna hear from mr.
demands -- senator demands group and others about voicing concerns about the strategy.
At all -- I've been totally up front my constituents have been totally up front we'll all Republicans who wanted to listen at the end of the day they can -- -- they want.
And obamacare is not going to be in did -- this with the strategy.
Now I've and I've read some good pieces on this never had some discussion on this but basically the point some conservatives have started to -- -- concern Charlie hurt prominent columnist.
And a friend of the shows.
-- written basically that while he supported the goal he was very concerned about what he described as sort of a duplicitous.
Approach -- if you tell people what to defund obamacare but it's not possible.
That you break the trust and you break faith with the electorate.
Yeah I mean look this was.
This is really about simple math and cut right so you need it took sixty votes to put obamacare -- on the senate.
Right now -- Republicans have 46.
Even if you got the sixty votes let's say and -- you have this prolonged.
President this is where the senate sitting on the ball while the government shuts down that there's a Republican filibuster blocking any action and it's in the US sent.
So assuming and I think it's far fetched to believe you can even get to sixty because -- fourteen to.
But -- right but let's assume you do well then you have issues as do most people believe.
The name obamacare and have a president named Obama.
You think he's going to be doing back and he said he would not.
That you would know -- that he would that he would that he would absolutely be a -- -- to building got rid of Obama than he could absolutely -- tell -- an absolutely veto.
I tend to believe them on that this is the signature issue so now that -- is no longer sixty.
And number now is sixty so -- pennants and the number in the house is no longer 218.
It's now 290.
So this is really simple mathematical equation if someone can tell me the end game where we get 290 votes in the house to get rid of obamacare.
And 67 votes in the senate fine if you can't do that.
Then what is your plan what is -- -- it.
Well right now the end game looks to -- -- yours -- -- speaker the speaker of the house.
Trying to get a concession of some kind from the president on the health care -- so that he can come back to you guys and say look.
Obviously to your point it wasn't going to be repealed or defined it but we got this now can we talk about larger things and I want to ask you.
As well the chairman of the Budget Committee Dave Camp ways and means.
Are trying to put together -- consensus -- yeah let's get some changes on obamacare but let's also take the opportunity in the debt ceiling.
To get a full year fiscal package that will address that some things on entitlements some things on the tax -- That sounds sort of like find this guy.
Great plan -- got a great idea.
We had good leverage if we were gonna do that in the debt negotiations -- which is what we put our guys -- our leadership tried to do weeks ago.
But a lot of groups out there who call themselves conservative groups.
-- out said no we can absolutely went on the strategy we shut down the government and we're gonna -- to get 67 votes in the senate in 290 in the house.
That's what they said that's their position so even what you're saying -- some concession now they promise.
They were gonna get rid of Obama -- with the strategy.
It's a lot.
-- -- from the beginning that is what we call incredulity.
And that congressman we thank you for making time for us we appreciate it.
