What the shut down stand up in day ten we needed a little bit of bad.
And heartwarming story -- job we did a different side to this whole -- down day this is a good one and were about to introduce you to a man doing his part to keep washing beautiful and -- they shut down.
The Chris Cox is the -- seeing on the screen there he took a -- Miller added to the national law.
He was cutting grass he was -- helping cut away some trees over blocking off the path to Lincoln Memorial.
He's in fact gonna tell you all this -- -- because Chris Cox is our guest and he is joining us now Chris seven looking forward to this all morning if such a pleasure to have -- -- program.
Thank you Jim pleased to be here to tell a little bit about where you got this idea why did you show up to DC with the -- -- chainsaw.
Well it was the first day that shut down.
Why -- -- here on art show in dom I would -- I was in a holding pattern finishing up some commissions and the first -- -- -- shut down that they were on the news talking about how vulnerable our -- memorial czar.
Well I had to -- for myself and I threw my beach cruiser and a back in my truck and I went to the Lincoln Memorial in.
Sure enough it was a ghost town and first my goal is just to prevent any vandalism that may have been the result of being understaffed.
And so we have some photos of view I'm -- like it but we can't -- control -- to bring up the photo where you have the one hour because I'd like you to explain to us how you transition then.
Friend may -- thinking -- -- it their -- he's national security here TU.
Hey I need to go to work out of their work in the capital tell us what that -- happens.
It was a transition.
And in order for me to play a more viable role I had to evolve.
And so I.
You know what I'm trying to -- up with the janitor position but I found -- -- there and so -- start to clean up some overflowing trash cans in -- that we're leading into little more -- -- side.
The Vietnam memorial there were bottles blowing and trash diapers spit cups.
Half -- apples you name it and it was just it was disgusting and so I just got a couple trash bags and before I knew it.
I'd bagged a couple hundred trash cans and removed them from the property.
And soon after that I got to below -- and started blowing all the trails and everything involved the -- next evening I saw that there -- a tree that had fallen down so I showed up that what's just a couple hours of sleep.
I remove the tree from mom took the -- -- which with a handicap accessible halfway and then I got my lawnmower and I got busy and -- -- -- Chris a lot of people would walk by and and see it seem like bad.
And they got that's too bad things like traction around but few would actually take action where does that come from and you -- where -- think that.
The deep down what is that then made you actually act on it.
-- there and I'm glad you asked that as well -- and there's a sentiment that has been in the back of American minds now for generations are.
Our president once said ask not what your country can do for you but what can you do for your country.
And as a civilian and you don't get a lot of opportunities to serve your country and I saw this as an opportunity.
And I was surprised I was the only one down there and I just wanted to and before I can lead a movement I first had the lead by example and so I wanna -- guy got in the trenches and just started making it happen and my goal was to inspire Americans around the country to get up in -- go out to their memorial.
And to the parks and to support the National Park Service.
But -- status showing up with a picnic basket.
I was hoping that they would show with a trash bag generate a firm handshake a smile and a good attitude.
What's really inspiring us right now Chris listening to it -- had been ailing joined you.
On the National Mall has anyone tried to stop here.
Well yes I have several volunteers show up on Sunday Elizabeth Harris and heard artery in and showed up and picked up trash.
The second evening of my of the trash detail I had a a gentleman from Northern Virginia named Jesse Brown as well.
He showed up and actually reached in his pocket now balsam.
Some supplies from some but trash bags and so when -- since the paper towels and you name it we wiped it down that that monument from the memorial who would have from World War II to -- -- It's like it was like a golf course release -- was before I let.
We're hearing today.
I Capitol Hill that maybe there's a break in the shut down maybe -- something going on there I'm just curious if you had the opportunity to talk to the lawmakers today -- you tell that.
I would tell them that they they did it.
The voters are are being there they're being ignored -- these guys have got there there there egos are positioning them.
And they're not able to make the right decisions and they need to come together and they need to unite this country.
Because we get we're getting black -- right now around the world.
We are the nation that feeds deplore includes we put clothes on the people around the world.
And we've got to keep our image intact and whatever we do we have to come together and unite as Americans and for the common goal of pushing America forward not let no fallback words we've got take lead by example.
As we have in the generations before we can't become complacent and lazy.
We have to be proactive.
And we -- when we see -- -- -- -- as Americans it's our responsibility.
To do it.
Not asked permission don't ask forgiveness if -- in your heart if you are exercising American ideology.
Then move forward and make things happen.
Why is that a -- viewers your professional with a chainsaw as well as an artist should have folks -- Ricci they can do so.
They -- your FaceBook page which we have -- screen Chris what is that address where they can find you.
We'll you know to be honest with the arm I appreciate that prop but I want to keep the message about.
The supporting the park service right now come I don't -- to be about me are my career.
I wanna keep the message on that supporting a park police.
And coming together around the country to fortify our memorials and right there's -- -- -- -- that.
I'm very proud inheritance and that's my thought this might caucusing is thought it would be something that our folks want to reach out and and and -- -- -- sure I had this feeling Chris but there's going to be a lot of people -- wanna continue this conversation so.
I look at it the best it's great to have you highlight of our day for sure.
And we look pretty -- back Chris -- right you're not a stranger night part of family narrates we would prefer to have you back thank you I'm very flattered -- thank you so much.
