Senate when that render crowd after I read you brought I when I read your book can I would is greatly surprised by it because.
I hit complete different impression -- Well I know the dog's gonna throw you off.
Today I capitol building and I see you -- in remote locking them but.
Yeah a lot of people have a perception of who I am and what I am and there are pretty much wrong almost a 100% of the time.
I think Ben do you view at all it was just a different -- it's there when I first met you here at the top of your game it was like a day or two before you won the election.
And I didn't I I had no idea that it had been so that nothing came easy fear that that you worked hard -- everything.
Well I think my life is no different in many other families where you know they're faced with the tough.
Decisions tough choices in tough circumstances and the messages that if you get some good people around you can.
Kind of battle back and make a difference and get out of that cycle.
The ever freely -- -- -- a bit longer menu your mother value your broken you have -- good went out of spot pushed many Americans do in this day and age.
But -- video questions -- even DOD having to try to find.
But no way to eat because it was a lot of money -- -- how many.
It truly was you know and very sort of rugged.
-- -- compared to Wear what you have now achieved and where you are.
Well you one thing my mom did always instill in us my sister and me is good work ethic to she had two or three jobs at all times trying to work keeper we roof over our head and and tell -- say listen you can do -- you can work work work and I still have that that's that and that's.
Something that I care very much about it still and then have taken them live near each and every day.
Right now there's a lot they've been written about some of your early life -- -- set that aside let others he did another interviews about yours truly is not about your wife.
That you first -- love their Dario please your -- I think he's a term mesmerized out of fear is that we used.
Yeah yeah -- Well -- she's was a very intelligent beautiful woman then and she still is.
And I -- when she walked into -- room you know you return and look and then you you're talking in her her laugh was very endearing and and she's got a good sense of humor to put up -- me she has to.
How Hollywood and -- 124 years.
And it when you saw that first I do think this is the one for me or did they did take allow.
Well I was definitely interest -- that's for -- -- issue is definitely the most beautiful one in the room and you know we've been together for 26 years more than half my life obviously it's been very special.
Why why is that what's the trick is it in part to work because the first part of your life was.
Your family and sort of imploded a little bit that you put extra effort in the second part of your life to put your keep your family strong.
Well my mom and dad were married four times each my mom is as happily divorced my dad is happily married and I always remember growing up while I'm never gonna do that I'm never gonna do that I'll do that but I'm gonna do a better.
And as a result of that I think I've.
And still do that type of kind of balance when you're in a marriage we have to have a sense of humor.
And -- need to be patient and sometimes you just can't fight about the small things sometimes we laugh at each other.
Some of the crazy things and they usually revolving the kids did you do the homer did not do their homework and they go out coming -- about.
But all -- you know you're fighting about what the kids are doing and I'm doing and really lot of it is just that.
Kind of a silly stuff so we've learned over over the years to -- get rid of the silly stuff and just focus on the things that really matter.
-- -- I don't think than people realize or even the media as we cover public figures.
It's always so different on the inside than the outside and -- you read about and your -- -- I have things that we -- write about or think about it's very different on the home front isn't.
Well I think with everybody you know obviously where we are public figures -- to let people in sometimes it's threatening for me to wrestle through a lot of the things that I talked about.
I felt it was appropriate because -- they want to gloss over the another tough things and just say hello all I want to have great election and everything's -- you know hunky -- great great great.
Because it's not you know my family as a work in progress like many other families.
I have a wonderful marriage and two great kids but you know we work at it we're always trying to be better and do better and can -- be more more understanding and patient.
Had a breath like every other failing Regis -- battle only after only kind of laugh only have to.
You know when -- decide to run for a senator you have in the book that -- your -- BO said something like what we want to make a fool of yourself or something like that and it.
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- I always thought that what was instrumental on your -- not to take away from you.
But was the health -- last minute deal that senator Harry Reid struck with.
One lead Nebraska senator Ben Nelson in late December I thought that hurt Martha Coakley your opponent tremendously and I thought that that -- the Democrats look really bad.
Well the whole the whole health care bill the way they went through mash and nations to.
Ram it through and though it would have been when I got -- to circumvent my vote to do something as big is that to reconciliation not -- the American people a chance to have their representatives really voting debate in a improve -- -- it.
And the fact that they almost turn themselves into pretzels.
They pass it is there's evidence to what's happening today the people sent a message -- November.
They still angry now they're trying to repeal it and -- repeal pieces of -- so it's clear that has broken.
And what are we doing either repeal and replace -- -- had to do something we can't just keep it as is.
We surprise election night to get a phone call on your cell phone from Vice President Biden.
Yes I was there was they got a lot of cause that night but -- there was and I still have found myself on actually.
That's one that I won't ever erase that there.
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Well those after the health care bill Wear -- for you know he set on the air Mr.
President this is them playing big deal.
And everyone remembers all the day in the next day I actually had a lunch with a -- we're walking around and he's shown in this and shown me that we spent a lot of time -- of mr.
vice president says call me show.
It's -- job this is a blank thing DO you.
And as a result of that you know we obviously haven't a cordial relationship and you know we agree you have to agree sometimes -- we disagree respectfully.
Yeah it's interesting that sort of the behind the -- politics people think that's all war in the spend -- largely it is in the city is a lot of war.
But the night day you won now you made a phone call to Senator Ted Kennedy and you took that seat that I know there's a big dispute whether it's his seat of the people's seat what I really want to call it.
But they made a call to -- candidates.
Shares -- first I called -- -- her her and her family were always very gracious.
To me I knew the senator obviously being a state senator worked with him on.
Various issues affecting my then at twelve communities.
And one thing I appreciate about him was his sense of humor and his dedication to public service we didn't agree and I have a lot but I have have great admiration.
For his service to the come -- Massachusetts.
Tell you famine is another year in the limelight you bring a lot of new famine there's even a reference in the book about how.
After he went to the white house correspondents' dinner summoned to the slapping your wife's dress a minute you know it's it's it's actually much harder to have some they have nothing -- -- than -- yourself but when you say he would give to children your wife -- Then they did beat up a little bit.
Have -- -- kind of used to it now they know whale was American IO hills and then in the medium business Arianna is the one that I kind of worry about because she's really not in the public guy and unlike other any other parent -- father when someone takes swipes are your kids or your family you know you kind of get your head in her hair up a little bit but.
It comes to me on a public figure you know swipe away bring -- on.
If you could -- that -- so -- gonna walk with the United States senate weather and snow at the end of this term or six years AT into whatever it is and at some point when you walk away.
How what do you want to walk away haven't accomplished what serve your serve this is what would make you feel the best walking away.
Fact that I contributed to moving our country forward to tackling the very real fiscal and financial problems that we're facing right now because we're in deep trouble.
And if I can do anything to get our country moving again and a find.
-- On fiscal footing that we need to have to compete globally.
If I've contributed to that to getting him to talk and focus on the very real issues affecting your country -- I'll I'll be happy man.
Can't I isn't just fun or not yeah 80% of the time is fine but it's a lot of work and I've had some very solid colleagues there and when people say you know they don't talk they don't do this listen.
In the senate at least I don't know what the house is like we have a very cordial and respectful relationship.
Even though the leaders kind of battle publicly they actually talked regularly as we all do to try to find common ground to attack the things we need to attack.
-- respectfully disagree when we when we don't agree.
But my hope is that we have opportunities now.
But coming up -- not only the CR but the debt ceiling and a whole host of other things we have opportunities to tackle.
These issues and send a very powerful message -- the rest of the world that the United States is ready for business we're serious about getting our debt and deficit in order.
And when and where where we want your business come -- back.
If you can -- yourself -- I don't after a Republican senator.
And democratic senator currently more so the two -- Once both -- soon and I am very close you know and obviously Senator McCain and -- excuse me a whole host of other senators.
And I respect you know senator carper -- Casey Warner.
And that pretty much anybody there who wants to focus on real issues I have a lot of respect for.
Senate they never imagine the book is fascinating how.
And they got like I said detonate it gave me and different impression neither -- -- better but I -- say they give me a whole new insight into what your life has likened.
