Big news here have the administration and this is a Fox News alert which has now been confirmed.
By our own Mike Emanuel and report is -- general Jim Jones who is the national security advisor to President Obama.
He has just announced that he is stepping down.
From that position Molly Henneberg joins me live at the White House -- this is a bit of a surprise especially coming at this time and we've heard a lot of people.
Leaving making -- leave the administration Jim Jones not really among them.
Hi Martha you know this is sometimes -- what happens about the two year marking the administration is usually some type of turnover of just getting a little bit of information.
That we have confirmed that he's resigning no further details it's not completely unexpected though.
That James Jones.
Retired Marine Corps general was very active in national security foreign policy that he will be leaving we don't know when if -- before and it turns -- after this just breaking.
Right this minute as we're going and on air so we're trying to keep up with my Blackberry well tell -- that's going on so we're we're digging into why am I happen -- went as far as the timing as well.
-- -- -- very much I know that you busy sort of covering what's coming in here.
In General Jones.
Served as a commander the United States European Command.
In the bush administration and there has obviously been you know a lot of concerns about.
-- possible terror attacks in Europe that we've been hearing about concerns about possible terror attacks in this country.
I his national security advisor and a number of -- -- elements of what's going on in Afghanistan also filing under his purview in terms of what he would be advising the president on.
-- -- it is interesting in that you know at this sort of very vulnerable moment for the administration.
When they may be in a situation where they're losing control of the house and perhaps even the -- That we would start to see a shake up on that on the military on the security side.
Of the west -- as well.
Well maybe he maybe he is leading but it doesn't mean he just kind of walks out one day and that's -- there's quite some sort of transition -- you never sort of they they would never leave an administration high and dry on issues of national security is there will be plenty of turnover and the president and his advisors will look for someone.
To step into that position national security -- you're saying very very crucial position in the administration especially with.
You know it's a very dangerous -- been following note those terror the terror threats in year out.
But this is not something away they they walk out the door turn out the lights Monday and and and there's nobody -- that position that will be a very careful handover.
No doubt Molly thank you very much Molly Henneberg reporting for the White House as we handle.
This breaking news story that just -- the -- and I just moments ago and it's now been confirmed by -- -- are on Mike Emmanuel.
It's surprising news bell at this.
I agree review general election John the inmates stay until the end of the year -- why you make an announcement now is it's is something I don't -- -- and he will be succeeded by.
Tom Donnelly and -- the deputy national security advisor there will be an announcement this afternoon.
In the Rose Garden Friday afternoon there -- a ceremony planned.
-- the president will make the announcement along with Jones and -- will -- -- there.
But these officials according -- now saying that Jones I had planned for the shot of his tenure -- last about two years in that position.
Which would be just about the time around the first of the year for that two year market -- 24 month -- to come up.
But with so much attention focused on mid terms right now 25 days away -- you wonder why the timing has to come now.
And it's also just crossing is that the resignation will be effective in two weeks.
So this is gonna happen very quickly Tom Donnelly and the deputy national security advisor has been a somewhat controversial characters well you have you remember some of what -- I've heard coming out of Bob Woodward's book there was some concern among some people about -- and -- has other big supporters in the White House as well.
So it is an interesting time given what we are learning about in where we're being -- -- in certain -- in Afghanistan.
With -- supply lines coming in and you know difficult relationships -- terms of this NATO fuel capabilities getting to our soldiers locked building on -- all around the -- -- -- a.
And has -- changed and there there will be speculation -- as to the relationship of the president has we James Jones now.
Whether they agreed or disagreed on national policy when it came stuff comes rather fighting the war in Afghanistan whether or not there -- disagreements on.
With Hamid Karzai or even if he's to the border in Pakistan and all that stuff file will work through today and try and figure out some answers at this weekend because right now there -- only questions.
And you know it has been a very volatile situation -- going on Afghanistan and it has been said that.
You know bill.
Administration of course is not happy with these reports that perhaps some of the people that were paying to protect our troops over there may be.
Turning on us that perhaps the Pakistani government is working both sides of the fence here supporting the Taliban do there ISI -- security forces.
And then on the other hand telling us that that they are being helpful to us in our own.
Fight against terrorism and the camps that exist in Pakistan and the possibility.
A terror attacks here at home so you have to wonder what kind of conversations went on.
Who was not happy who decided to change need to be made or whether or not this national security advisor thought he was being listened to you -- -- -- we bring up with.
Regarding the war in Afghanistan you know there's there's a deadline next summer July 2011 that was the marker that was set down during the president's speech at West Point to to get out of this war and end it.
I KT McFarland back with -- -- -- or 45 minutes ago on a different topic but she's jumping back and.
The seat now KTU.
Reaction to well now I and seven years on the National Security Council and the Nixon and Ford administrations in the White House.
And they have a national security advisor.
Resign at this point really giving two weeks notice with no announcement of who's replacing him.
To me what that's sounds like is that there's a lot behind the scenes this is not a normal -- -- wanna spend more time with my family and tire I wanna get back to a real life.
Hey you know what I at a that this is also the coming in fast and furious at the moment but time Don -- deputy national security advisor is gonna step -- his position is what we're learning naturally I am now Hank Aaron while -- and that makes a little bit of a difference that you -- remember this is coming on the on the heels out.
-- -- -- -- Which is which talks about our rear of -- attrition within the administration between.
Have Ramallah in General Petraeus between Doug loses the general in charge on National Security Council staff the one who's in charge of the Afghan war.
So I'm wondering if this does this preclude that there's some sort of the first step we're seeing.
In some kind of a policy shake up because -- -- out of Afghanistan has not been good.
It it's is very interesting yield better than anybody -- and spent.
So many eight in those hours in these kind of conversations and it there's -- and I would imagine.
Very deep divisions about which way to go out there and the timeline is also a source of great controversy.
A lot of focus on having to get a lot done General Petraeus is is on the job there he wants to prove that he can -- -- can carry out this mission in the time -- -- -- he's been -- You know wolf what what do you think in terms of what may be coming back from the field and what's happening there and from General Petraeus even in terms of who he needs to be in charge back here.
Well here's the -- General Petraeus and admiral Mullen have to have ruling staked a lot on saying.
Give us what we need to do the job and we're gonna start showing you results and we think we can search showing you results as early as December.
The precedents -- firm now on the deadline in -- seem to be a division.
Being -- you've had a read between the lines of listen to what deadline is this in July 2011 the president has said.
We're gonna be coming home 2011 in July Vice President Biden has said in July 2011 years -- a lot of troops start coming home.
General Petraeus when I talk to and been very clear about saying.
July 2011 wanted to see where we are and see what we do next so I think that what you're starting to see is a little bit of the division between the military.
-- says give us what we need to do the job and give us more time.
To do the job and a president who's working out an election.
Was looking at his basic -- -- the certainly the Woodward Burke talks about I have to keep my base happy I have to keep them with me.
At a president who is not a war -- not comfortable with these decisions.
In the end the request came in for more troops in the 30000 that would -- -- Bradley said look with shop at 30000 elsewhere -- -- But -- T we -- -- everything now is he's seen through.
The prism of politics.
Right knowing that November 2 is lurking right around the corner right you have Rahm Emanuel leaving last week.
Larry Summers part of that -- rumors before that and now -- national security advisor.
It's hitting this White House not just on the military side.
Now but on the political side and the financial side prior to that -- that now why would you not be able to say.
You know keep your powder dry let's hang on to this and we'll do it after the election I did yes it not present the the impression.
That everyone's jumping ship.
You bet it does and it's very usual and even Bob gates remember he spoke a couple of weeks ago is that I'm not going to be here for the 2012 election.
I'm going to be resigning.
But he's -- a lot of lead time with that he's he's made it very clear.
But that's not a political decision on his part.
But to see -- national security advisor who a week ago.
With somebody that was even talked about as a potential replacement for Bob gates to see him now stepping down with now.
Advance knowledge no advanced gossip in Washington now with only two weeks ago I think that's pretty significant and it would appear you know after the Tom Donnelly when he was one of the people those discussed as a possible chief -- -- replace yes.
The military yes so clearly you know he's somebody that they see moving into a couple different position of the go to -- and somebody.
Tonight I hear a lot of manual then and now Jim Jones as well so and that would be significant because it it's gone on he's not somebody with -- national security background that some of the military or intelligence -- -- -- for that and what exactly went Katie thank you so much for sticking around thank have you it'll happen on this breaking news.
We -- now into the.
