Welcome back to FOX & Friends when he came close to dying twice thirty years after the assassination attempt on Ronald Reagan the untold stories about that horrific day are revealed in the new book called -- -- down.
She -- Washington Post reporter deal Wilbur is here are good -- -- Morning -- doing well also used it this story has been incomplete.
For the past thirty years that we haven't known some of the most vital.
Well what what's key to remember is what you think you know about this day you really don't now.
And that Ronald Reagan literally.
Came within a split second a split second decision and one inch of -- it was that close.
Without the quick reactions of a Secret Service agent getting him out the way of -- is gunfire.
And that same agent getting -- to the hospital in time.
Ronald Reagan would have died at a march 31 1981.
Bush would woken up as president of United States.
Unbelievable and so that agent is responsible for basically you see he's saving his life twice that day.
It was also remarkable too is that he lost more than half his blood and I don't think many Americans knew that a lot of it seemed like was being.
You know -- that's exactly right when I interviewed more than a 125 people for rawhide down and did all this researcher quickly came to conclude.
That that the story that you think you know you don't know when it's been largely incomplete for the last thirty years.
I mean it just unreal to me what did it for me when I realized how close Ronald Reagan actually came to dying.
Was when I interviewed a 31 year old surgical intern -- it was 31 year old at the time.
Who held the president's beating heart in his hand literally helped Ronald Reagan's partner's hand and operating room filled with Secret Service agents and that's what did it -- And one of the things that you found by I guess interviewing Jack -- that Secret Service agent.
We talk about was their first thing you know if the president had been hit they couldn't tell the bullet had actually gone -- -- they saw a little bit of blood.
On his lip and didn't know where it was coming from and that's when he made the split second decision we're not going back to the White House which is safer.
We're going to the hospital.
Yeah imagine that's I mean you guys have been stuck in traffic before and and and presidential -- that go on forever imagine that there's a shooting at the Hilton.
Gun fires down there in the presidential limousine.
-- just the driver Jerry park and the president Jerry pars checking the president out up and out looking for blood doesn't see anything gets on the radio and says.
Rawhide is okay rawhide is okay that's -- Secret Service code name in the title of the book.
And so they take off for them the White House -- they think that Reagan made it.
And there alone.
I mean that limousine is alone there's no motorcade that -- everyone else behind the racing back the White House frantically going so fast that the Secret Service agent driver doesn't even look at the speedometer.
Barely misses hitting a woman in a straw pushing a child in -- stroller well then Reagan starts deteriorating turns ashen his -- go blue.
You know he's had some problems.
You know bright -- blood appears -- -- and Jerry part knows.
Oh no I must've broken -- rib and -- -- along this is really bad.
We need to get to hospital right away and one of the things were big revelations in the book too we just -- few seconds ago which is the President Reagan may not have been the first target that's I think surprising all of us who was.
Oh Jimmy Carter actually what John -- what we fail to remember is that John Hinckley week it's -- -- -- that he was -- Ronald Reagan impress Jodie Foster.
Well and in stock actually used items sexual Jodie Foster stockman went up to -- -- -- remember she went to Yale she left Hollywood to go to Yale well.
There is -- the rope line thinking if he shoots Reagan is gonna impress fostering -- affection.
But that all just months earlier.
He had been stalking Jimmy Carter and then when Jimmy Carter lost -- started fixating on Reagan and was actually outside of Blair house.
The residents were Reagan's state when he was visiting the White House during the transition period right and he had a gun with him.
Well that the book is unbelievable isn't great journals and here don't go out picking up -- called rawhide down the near assassination of Ronald Reagan thanks so much for joining us.
