Me introduce you to our panel today David for Tunisia is joining me this morning and author and historian and be back -- happy back and Ed Sullivan.
The former New York assemblyman is joining me again wind -- going feisty discussion last time.
And I am really happy to have you here basically both of you gentlemen thank the lucky lady in the room.
I gotta say so this situation starts -- coverage today in Japan but we can over look Libya because today NATO is supposed to take over.
As really believed on this and and tonight the president will speak and say why the US is taking the world it's taking in the first place.
David do you think that the US has it right in terms of going in the way we did and staying.
As long as we have.
Not the way we did I mean it's certainly been a confused situation in the whole thing in the Middle East it's.
It's what's the criteria is -- our national interest -- of protecting.
Civilians -- indigenous populations of these countries from dictators if that's the case well Yemen Syria.
Egypt is now we're not quite sure what's going on there to military government is is cracking down our crane.
It's it's a mess and American policy will -- in 2009.
We had the revolt of the Iranian people the administration did nothing.
So we seem to be going around sort of like a little steel ball in the pinball machine.
And I'm not quite sure where we're going it hasn't been explained but the key factor I think.
Failure to go to United States congress to go the American people to put the international community.
NATO the Arab League the United Nations before the congress of the United States for the constitution before the American people.
-- -- lining up just explain to our viewers you generally the president would go to congress and not only get authority to go in although he is the commander in chief.
The money I mean this is not an inexpensive operation it's gone -- -- for a while and the critics say that Obama has nothing but a Fuzzy narrative those are the terms that would lessen their minds it's because he added that that may be his -- -- -- -- in your mind is so generally -- it I think we're doing the right thing I think -- -- what we didn't.
-- -- there's two there are two plans.
And is not one plan -- to plant wasn't -- to save the people.
For all of Libya from my almost certain slaughter on the hit at the hands of a -- man.
Who is -- that cannot be.
And so that's number one number two is becoming Qaddafi and the president has been crystal clear Qaddafi must -- what's frequency of the crystal -- What could not usually that there's nothing really hard to lull in the wasn't so let's look Fuzzy part of that period.
The Dell -- -- Columbia are.
Is that the administration keep saying yes no yes no.
At at the same thing is they are vital interest is it not -- vital interest we keep getting different stories from different parts of the administration.
I would go to the bank with Qaddafi must gulf -- -- in order to leave the public opinion what -- clear.
When he said Qaddafi must go I would go to when we don't know that we really don't know that and we could be seeing a situation.
I say that we have at times but he hasn't said that every time.
You know -- -- not -- he's made an -- all -- -- either but -- somebody talk somebody else then -- twice as part of a coalition force at this time no doubt about it the other countries involved but -- -- best fighting force in the world not quite copies still stands so either we're doing it world.
Since you re really looking and eventually I'll go out there right oh my god problems.
This is this is the second time I've sort of been called upon to give my reaction to the president's statement and he hasn't given the statement yet until 730 tonight and I don't think.
And so and that's not my fault that's his fault that he should have come to the American people with the absolute.
Precise statement and we're -- we technology we don't want to -- FDR doesn't talk about Pearl Harbor the battle of midway.
Me challenge you on that happen because on this morning -- -- Everybody is saying that the president should have spoken sooner about what we're going to do and what we are doing in Libya but then.
He's criticized when he says in Afghanistan we're -- -- withdraw by X date which has shifted to.
And people said why are you telling the enemy when we're going to come -- -- we're gonna leave how many troops were going to say we shouldn't be giving out that information.
Is it not possible that the president wasn't.
Verbal or clear about what the mission would be for us to what are vital interest are because he doesn't want to give the information away.
Well I think it's not.
-- matter of of giving aid and comfort to the enemies to tell the American people what our mission is.
I do think it is a mistake to set.
Goals where you're going to get out of a country at this point -- that point because it it gives the enemy.
And they are our enemies the advantage to do an old rope a dope strategy on it.
So even even when you're in a combat situation and then you limited to say no boots on the ground which is like I don't know of -- -- the -- boots on the ground.
It's like you you do want to have that.
Indecision or this this element of surprise.
With the enemy not knowing what you're gonna do not knowing if they can wait you out and again.
You know we had -- the fact -- did.
Partition partition of Iraq are we heading -- words that.
In Libya or as Ed says are we going to have a regime change fully.
Still we're actually sort of vehicle you advance it hopefully get -- the vessel but it I don't know what -- the option of a split Libya where there's a section that is Qaddafi land.
And then there's a section that is it's this is an option that has been like you could explain after the rebels who we gave their lives many of them and who fought very hard.
To get rid of Qaddafi is -- we're we're gonna give -- pointed out early view the screen -- and I think that Qaddafi must -- he's a rumor he heard a hundred over 400 Americans justice and it is -- waiting so long right right out without question and we shouldn't have kept him going now why I agree with you wanted to criticize people both both bush and -- Obama floor before delaying dealing with economically -- us all had opportunity always read what happened all these files created that is that was wrong.
But now Lou that DDD status in the fire and now it's time to QB go and I think that it's been -- they got.
Russia and China to back off and this Security Council that was a brilliant move by Hillary Clinton I think.
-- -- piece of work.
They got Germany you know like exactly but there -- quiet about it.
Support for our -- move there and let me just point out in your historian.
In in not Ed too hot -- -- 100 years you've got to it.
In march of of 2011.
Teddy Roosevelt give a speech in which he talked about taking the canal zone.
And -- and he was criticized for not consulting with congress when he moved.
To to us that helped write the -- that there -- -- that pantomime that the congress debate exactly read there you go adhesive and anything he'll elaborate on that and he said.
He said well I was not -- troops in doing that.
Yes he did -- to know dental pain and -- -- true but -- they could have and you eat it he said they didn't they're not debating the canal.
They're debating meet my behavior.
-- -- if Obama might be saying to herself.
They're not behaving not debating the military action federal -- agreement that they're debating -- Talking to congress was out -- coming up that's what that's a different debate.
Well that's better than they measure that may administered plan.
That's by the constitution.
And and I would happen to be in Harvard Square.
On President's Day February 21.
And I see all these people coming out of the subway and -- all gathering and all of a -- they've got all signs up.
And there Libyans.
They're Libyans and they've all got signs Obama help us Obama help us it was weeks after that moment.
This was not something which happened with alacrity with speed and then when it does transpire.
He has it taken those weeks to go the congress to go the American people he still is we're still not sure exactly what the full goals are.
Are they -- a date Ed Sullivan's goals of getting rid of Qaddafi.
Or are we going to leave him in place and just stop the -- I remember that we don't we haven't used in this it in this conversation.
Is the term no fly zone.
That was supposed to be the UN resolution is what we've got a check well -- -- there's no airplay -- I -- well I don't know -- -- now we've gone beyond that the United Nations -- is going beyond that.
And so what is the mission --
