We'll Muslim civil rights group says that they will publicly challenge Muslim radicalization hearings that kick off this Thursday.
On Capitol Hill is spoken about them in.
At a Council On American Islamic Relations known as care says that the organizer house homeland security committee chairman congressman Peter King.
Is spreading quote -- information.
But the new York Republican says it that is not his purpose at all was in the -- he set.
The main goal is to show the extensive radicalization within the Muslim American community how dangerous that is how serious that is.
And also how it happens and whether or not the Muslim community response to that weather and I think cooperate with the law enforcement.
I -- -- with -- -- that to show that this is a real threat it's a growing threat.
And it's not just me saying this attorney general Eric -- says you can't sleep tonight because of the growing -- -- radicalization.
Among young Muslim American men.
I says -- this is king Corey sailor is the national legislative director and spokesman.
For the Council On American Islamic Relations known as scared he joins me now -- welcome good to have good morning Martha good morning to you eat what do you fear most about these hearings.
Well there's two layers one congressman king has a history of making anti Muslim remarks such as they are too many mosques in America.
He's also early in January applied that Muslims are not American.
When it comes to pushing back against violent extremism.
Then he goes on what he does he puts on a bunch of false allegations.
-- -- 8085% of American Muslim leadership are extremists and not cooperating with law enforcement.
He's contradicted by FBI director Mueller.
He's contradicted by the head of the largest sheriff's department in the United States is also contradicted by Duke University that shows that about half of the cases.
That the FBI and other law enforcement agencies have come from the American -- -- community.
I won't let me ask you this in a sort of take Peter -- -- out of it for a mom -- I understand obviously he's in the position is that is that chair of this committee and Homeland Security.
But do you think that it is worth investigating.
The connection that may exist in the radicalization of some young Muslims in this country who may want to commit acts of terror are are in our homeland.
Is that -- I think -- I think it's important to investigate violent extremism in our country in general so when someone tries to blow up a mosque in Florida.
I'd like to know -- what their motivations are when someone goes into the holocaust museum and shoot people up.
I'd like to know what their motives are.
What congressman king is doing which is fundamentally on American is focusing on one religious minority.
That's been done to Catholics that's been done to Jews that's been done to mormons I think it's inappropriate and we've already learned the lesson that we should not -- -- discriminated against religious minority.
You know but when you look at the facts OK since 2000 may of 2009 have 22 different.
Young Muslim radicals and and -- -- everybody who talks about this points out that this is not the broader Muslim community.
They're concerned about radicalization with -- The Muslim community with these individuals and you know you look at these different you know you -- -- buys us -- -- you look it has sign you look at the win column underwear bomber.
All of them went that you are linked in in some -- in communicating with Anwar Al -- -- -- -- here's just one example.
Of these men you see on your screen here who had a connection -- communication.
With at least one person who was at one point considered a very legitimate.
-- -- head of the mosque outside of Washington.
Well you know we strongly condemned -- -- all hockey and the problem is that what congressman king is not going to examine.
Because he asserts that Muslims are not cooperating with law enforcement as the things that we've done so again let's go with the facts I am the one who made the phone call.
That got the FBI involved in the yet in the Virginia five case.
That kind of things not gonna come out what congressman king wants to say.
And smear our entire community and you see that through things like there are too many mosques in America.
She said that about any other religious minority in this country there would be an outcry.
But what we hear particularly from Republican side -- silence on those kind of remarks.
But you know what I'm asking is are you do you believe that these people -- you mean -- -- leave that these people reflect badly on your own community.
So why would you not want to address it and I know that they argument is that it we should be looking at all kinds of extremism you can't do that.
Let's take on one problem that I think most Americans it net is something that concerns them in this country and Muslims should be in on this conversation.
And it should be good communication between -- and say look we got hot here we have a promise -- a rising in -- -- have a problem that's arising among you know somebody you know sort of disenfranchising you know young people whose own family members are horrified at what their -- you know -- in this TVs two cases.
Have done isn't this a big concern to you as well and wouldn't you welcome the opportunity to to get this out in the open talk about it.
Sure Martha -- challenge you when you say that isn't this a big concern it's a huge concern for our community that we've been doing a lot about.
And -- has submitted testimony to the hearing that will prove that conclusively but what's not happening here.
Is when you have the Southern Poverty Law Center reporting that white extremist groups are.
On the rise in this country that movement produce the Oklahoma City bomber and congressman -- A lot of doubted these misses it there's 22 instances since may have their -- and I are on the rise right now there are exciting now.
Hi this is a problem.
And to deny that -- to be looked that.
It is to -- just turn turn away from something that you know I think most Americans if you say what's your top concern in terms of terrorism is among if not -- I write I decide I -- testing.
Sony completely contradicts that and shows the work that -- doing again -- -- to you.
I'm the one who made the phone call they got the FBI and -- -- support everything I'm hearing is that looking to show into this how -- that -- -- how is that need denying the problem.
There isn't saying -- -- why is it just Peter -- that that you have a problem with or if he would not to be part of this hearing would you would you be behind it would you think it was a good idea.
I would certainly support a hearing on examination of violent extremism in this country but mark but Martha keep in mind.
When the which finder comes to town and builds up higher in the middle of the town and says an analyst here -- You gotta be really nervous and -- entertaining as.
