Back -- me.
Gettysburg address and that's the theme of Barack Obama's inauguration the -- -- -- -- fascination.
With the Abraham Lincoln is going to be reflected threw -- the festivities of this week.
Joining us is a familiar face in politics former New York governor Mario Cuomo governor welcome.
Gotten calls why Lincoln matters and frankly the book matters this week because of this would be incredible connection that I think Barack Obama feels with -- Abraham Lincoln.
Both coming from Illinois but also the very historic times we come -- so let me ask you -- the obvious question why does Lincoln matter this week with Barack Obama.
Well groomed in the fascination that.
-- common to politicians.
That people regardless Kim -- star in -- the greatest president ever most of them.
And Democrats Republicans Teddy Roosevelt.
The -- democratic persons have all fashion themselves.
Lincoln to one extent or another.
I think Obama.
Can do it more authentically than most other presidents.
Have for a number of reasons number one yes they're both from Illinois.
Number two they're both.
Absolutely brilliant intellectual.
They're great writers.
They're great people -- -- words.
More than that.
The Lincoln started.
At the presidency.
In a crisis situation.
And Obama certainly has a crisis situation.
A sort of a lot of familiarity.
Between the two and there are also a very there's some very great difference is that people and not talking about.
Both of them are non ideological.
Both of them are people who believe in.
-- Lincoln believed in common sense and benign pragmatism.
So does Obama Obama is gonna disappoint a whole lot of extreme liberals there's no question about that.
The big difference is this.
That Lincoln had -- -- Would have produced a scarred America.
Where in May be a broken union.
But it would have been limited the damage to the United States -- America who would not have heard the rest of the world.
If he succeeded.
As he did -- set America on the road to the American dream he did that.
If Obama fails the whole world delusions.
-- -- is a 148.
Now you have six billion people on the plan.
Where only one of many super.
Bodies in -- existence.
If he fails to cure the economy.
We'll get it stronger.
Then the whole world is gonna suffer do you think that his biggest challenge is going to be the foreign stage -- is that going to be the US economy no I think I think it is that Obama has one great opportunity to be.
That regarded as a great president eventually and one great.
The opportunity is the economy because it is in crisis.
And he didn't do it.
What about everybody knows that's that's the way we should we need to go out there and the need for this crisis is an opportunity -- to be great you have to deal with crises.
Roosevelt did Lincoln did and so he has the chance and the economy will be better three years from now.
And so people will say that -- The downside is Afghanistan.
You know and that's a real problem for.
The bailout right now I don't understand it and I don't know who does that I don't I think it's pretty apparent that congress doesn't I don't even -- or have other ideas they were they really don't.
They started Paulson started by saying look we're gonna give it to the banks.
And then the banks are gonna wash their their balance -- can get rid of the junk and once they get rid -- -- they're gonna start lending money.
So we gave them the money they got the balance sheets cleaned and then they didn't -- any Mohammed.
-- no deals were health facilities or we'll change that now we'll take a piece of the action.
Now they're talking about having a bank that belongs to the United States of America -- all the junk.
And when you buy the junk how do you value it.
How do you value that jumped what's the -- nobody knows and so.
I'm unhappy and I think most Americans aren't happy.
Of course I don't understand.
How it's going to work.
I understand the stimulation.
Process I understand spending a whole Lotta money trying to create jobs that's a very good idea.
And in the end you know there's Wall Street you have to take care of but -- mainstream.
And make -- -- probably in the long run the and we know what to do there.
We know that tax cuts might help we know that an infrastructure piece -- help we know that putting money into new energy will help.
Who will help create -- we're gonna come back to that will have more with Governor Cuomo.
