I'm addressing the nation's most influential doctors -- the American Medical Association meeting in Chicago today pushing his plan to overhaul the US health care system.
Many members of the -- are concerned about the so called public option.
But for the government would cover 45 million uninsured Americans but the president maintains that Americans will still have a choice listen.
If you don't like your health care coverage.
Or you don't have any insurance at all.
You'll have a chance under what we proposed to take part in what we're calling a health insurance exchange.
This exchange will allow you to one stop shop for -- health care plan.
Compare benefits and prices.
And choose a plan that's best for you and your family.
-- the -- is though White House deputy Press Secretary Bill Burton bill I can go over plan after plan after plan heard the president today I know he says that eventually this thing is gonna pay for itself.
But nobody has explained how you plan on paying for this from the get go.
Well what's critically important tracks I appreciate you asking this question.
Is that we do something aggressive to get health care costs under control because these skyrocketing cost -- -- -- American families and businesses and the federal budget.
I don't want to bring them under control we're -- -- available deficit under control and we're never going to be able to get one for France to rub.
What the president suggests is what do you -- on the campaign trail one of the things is and in some of the tax cuts that were in place for some of the richest Americans.
Another element is finding savings in Medicare and Medicaid which he outlined over the course of this weekend.
And we think that by.
Working together -- our partners on Capitol Hill from both parties in both the house and the senate.
Definitely -- a lot of together a plan that makes sense he attacks over the original overtime your tax bill do you tax health benefits because the vice president says -- against the president all along the campaign trail said he's against -- in fact he attacked John McCain.
And now all the president's been got a mud on taxing health benefits hasn't come out in favor other.
Hasn't come out against it but -- -- bill comes to his desk and there is an item that says we're gonna tax health benefits will he sign it.
-- evidently be that easy to give issue a veto threat on -- -- and how I appreciate that question.
We're right now we're at the table with doctors and providers Democrats and Republicans trying to hash out what is the best comprehensive Health Care Reform that's gonna bring down the cost of health care.
Make sure people can keep their doctor -- they want them and make sure that its deficit neutral we'll get all the ideas that are on the table and we're trying to come up with what's the best possible.
Plan that the public option is a no go for a lot of Democrats and Kent Conrad came out and said look we just don't have the votes on this thing naming the president was pitching is saying.
That the public option is your friend today to the American Medical Association.
But but but a lot of Democrats are saying this thing is not gonna work and we simply do not have the votes bill.
Sure there's Democrats and Republicans who were forced some elements and against some of the elements that are being discussed out there.
But what we're doing is we're talking every one.
And trying to find a comprehensive plan that incorporates.
Obviously public -- which the president's -- some of these other options that are.
Going to ensure that we bring cost down make sure -- didn't keep their doctors if they want them.
And get it passed.
Now -- the time for us to do it if we don't do it now we're never gonna get the deficit.
Under control we're never going to be able to get this economy on its feet for -- long term sustained growth.
Does Martha -- here -- thanks for coming on -- I have a question about small businesses and and what -- incentive is that going to be to keep the -- -- so.
You know on the wedding and if I like my health care program I like my doctors.
The president say -- keep them.
But that doesn't take into account whether my employer is -- let me keep the program that I like if he can -- my programming and get the government program.
Right it will look what the president's gonna try to do is have a -- brings down costs for everybody.
And that means small businesses and large businesses are going to have be able to take part of plan that is less expensive and more effective for that consumers -- we.
The president thinks we ought to have a competitive marketplace for health care and that includes for businesses and for individuals so the hope is that.
Were able to create -- of comprehensive health reform.
That people buy into.
That's gonna help everybody across the board and help us get our deficit under control.
I had a lot of questions remain thanks very -- -- answer some of Bill Burton from the White House thanks felt.
Murtha -- thank you.
