Good Friday afternoon everyone welcome into a special edition of gadgets and games on this Friday afternoon I'm your host Clayton Morris this year.
We decided to storm -- hall in San Diego at the San Diego convention senator for comic con 2010.
We wanted to give you -- behind the scenes look at all of the goings on out all of the different boots you know comic con has really taken money.
A life of its own used to be kind of small.
Comics artists would just show up you'd walk down comics Alley an artist's Alley there and talk to thinkers and writers and artists now it's a beast.
Now movie studios are rolling out brand new movies there videogame developers -- they're showing off their latest Weyers.
Marvel entertainment group rolling and rolling out showing you the new -- war movie.
Green lantern is on display for the new green lantern movie from DC.
All of these things are taking place a comic -- 2010 in San Diego so we decided to hit the Florida give you a sneak -- and -- behind the scenes walk through take a look.
They played well looks like I got the good job today because I'm out here in San Diego.
Attending what is basically known as there at San Diego comic October 41 anniversary.
Right now I'm sitting Oden.
-- -- so we're here we're gonna walk around did you guys that would help.
Like it started out really small but if you look around right now there are over 101000 people here right now.
If he's gonna get -- that we so now we're gonna go over and talk to.
-- it was product marvel digital comics.
Talking with us so tell us what you got -- here on the iPad right now and tell us a little bit about -- digital comics as a whole.
I'll check marble digital comics as a whole we have two different products we have to talk -- you there.
I didn't -- now -- -- it's fun.
Are covered in doing this.
Want to do so Aaron.
So -- -- gives you different products we have a subscription product or online yet.
Just over 8000 bucks at 999 -- month.
The Bible year and actually right now during convention for online or offline we're offering.
It's -- percent discount.
And then the other product to treat launched recently launched the iPad was -- comics on.
Per issue purchase basis for a dollar night and that's on this the iPad and its power by comets Knology.
And god -- back and and we worked with them on the interface to make it work.
With our books and our reader and also -- actually store located.
So that you can go in.
Here and you had your books they can like open up we'll look superheroes live here.
And you can -- you can scroll like bats and then if you want to.
You can just double tap and then they'll fall around the page plea goes real close we can easily really that's.
And if you want to also you can go down here and you can skip ahead to any page.
Look and see it that way as well.
Very cool now however.
Did you comics change the content industry becomes available.
But what we're seeing is that digital comics are actually expanding.
He audience for comic books.
That people are discovering comic books will be discovery complex now additionally -- going to their stores.
The local comic shops and buying books and we get a lot of feedback from people saying why didn't know about that character and now I'm buying books -- back here.
So either -- Serious -- book collector.
And you must see everything and can't afford to buy everything so the subscription model is very attracted to you.
They might be someone who is what we call laps reader so that you six like -- No longer as being re engage in the have the time were accessed through countless jobs.
-- would -- titles that are out right now.
-- all the trip.
We'll hear category here Agassi what's in them.
So you know your X-Men.
-- Hit monkey which.
Just came out 2000 and you can -- -- preview do you actually while Biden for you click right there is answering my location.
And it's gonna pull up by the local -- book shops that I can actually -- -- -- so here.
North -- complex politics on the Chicago signed up up up buddy.
That's a good blasphemy is that as their let me -- -- -- took down here he does it go down here I don't.
All right let me do one back in now in New York.
So then in the New York let me.
All these different funny business comics you go.
And you buy the book.
-- -- I guess.
Readers that look forward to getting on their iPad.
One of them.
True it's also on the iPod -- touches and iphones as well -- great -- then that everybody who didn't matter which.
-- and also to me wouldn't.
-- -- -- So this is not digital comics.
A -- -- was mentioning before subscription service we are signing up users today.
And if you sign up here at the convention we actually have a limited edition.
That were offering.
Hold on second.
It's that it's in the in the -- action figures.
Limited edition that we got just for the convention and then -- you sign up for subscription today you can take this home with him -- can -- And right let's -- a -- -- I have a lot of thank you very much for talking with us thank you very -- and keep walking around now.
Good luck with that with the application and with all the digital comics make itself.
So what I -- I'll tell us about is that -- -- That was developed by actually I think -- right over here since they didn't really talk.
Hey David how are you.
So tell us -- dot com technology.
-- -- Did you distribution platform so -- distribute digital conference on the iPhone the iPad and the -- so we partner with companies like marvel and DC comics.
Not only carry there apps are their comments in our -- which is that it's called comics by comic solid.
But also make branded apps that were responsible creating the marvel Marvel Comics -- on the iPhone and iPad and the DC comics app on the iPhone iPad along with some others like -- studios.
-- so as someone develops and -- what do you think.
Like how do you think that -- comments is really affecting the company and.
I think it's just growing and at the moment so there are in the it indications are that we're reaching an audience it's different than the data -- audience are coming on Wednesday to come up with shots.
As well as -- pushing some people comic book -- so we exit -- retailer finder and all of our apps.
So you can take advantage of -- of the location awareness of the device.
And then find a local store -- -- directly -- the iPhone so we hear reports from retailers that have made sales and got new customers from digital film which is really what we think episodes.
Great for those people who don't just want to look at it on the I've never actually wanna be like -- collector and.
Yeah yeah I admit they gave -- you know.
There are enough comic stores to go around people don't even know where their local column that story is and so having this service in the happen.
It is exposing more people to comic books in general is a good thing.
So please show us Lebanon Syria pops up.
So it's gonna look pretty familiar -- seen the if you seen the marvel at.
So this is comments -- -- solid game.
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- We -- with maybe eight publishers and I don't know eighty -- we now have over Tony 300 comics and about forty publishers and so it does all -- of the expected today.
The reading experience is it is again yeah because we're powering the marvel and DC -- You'll see him very similar experience where you know you can -- band and news.
-- -- there.
-- The guiding you technology -- -- that'd take.
-- you -- on the iPad and it's pretty good full screen as well.
So and other than.
That I mean what do you think this mean like how -- -- bringing your readers into the comic book world.
Really good example is then.
Our top ten normally is not marvel or DC superhero books it's much more likely hell boy a dark -- -- wanted from top down.
Kickass from icon which is a marvel line so comment -- through that -- movies.
License material things that everybody knows about because of the pop culture.
You know course.
Don't give your marble just amazingly well.
The DC comics they've only been up like three weeks it pretty much dominated our top ten right now -- -- -- right.
Yeah yeah and at quick picture this you know we -- I think it was 18% of our buyers -- never got a comment before.
Like 9% -- a great comic after buying -- -- particularly.
So again you know I think distribution of comics hasn't kept up -- and -- popular comic characters aren't and intellectual property is you know so.
It's a big deal to be able to have those at your fingertips on the devices they use.
And our goal over the next here is more contents.
-- -- -- And you know more platforms so I think you know this is a year the iPhone no -- digital comics.
And the next he's going to be about multiplatform C could actually on our platform you can buy on Baghdad and read on the web or -- and the web and read on the web.
And the -- the iPhone so it's completely compatible.
DC comic -- on the web you can actually been reading on your iPhone.
So that the -- Isabel will not just for the that's right yeah so it's comments like -- -- on iTunes.
You can just look up comics were the first one then there is.
There -- couple of comics -- hours just cult comics by itself.
And then comics dot com it's -- -- dot com is the website the store and reader for the labs same exact system.
Well thank you very much -- than my legacy thanks.
Good luck with the opposition candidates happy anniversary yeah I think you.
I think we're gonna keep walking around now.
One -- about being out here is we're -- environment with a terrific.
So the other big comic book company obviously is DC comics.
Getting nearly John groove right now he's EVP of sales marketing.
Or DC and entertainment let's just.
Okay and we're just a little bit about the disease comics iPad app right now so John.
What can viewers expect from DC -- Yeah it's exciting to be in digital publishing in the -- been such a wonderful entree into it.
So across any apple device with our partners a -- technology and -- of the -- -- distribution we got into this after a few weeks back.
What they can expect is initially periodicals.
We obviously want to get to a place where all of DC's.
Magazines and collected editions in graphic novels -- -- but right now it's the best Superman Batman green lantern.
In common platform right there on your device.
So how do you think digital -- have been a boon to the top -- that we've heard great.
Information both summer research to -- and also anecdotal about how this is bringing new readers into the fold we're not gonna do it unless it's -- We're doing all we can't make sure traditional retailing.
Feels great about this new technology.
Attitude is the idea.
And how artist known about them from.
Paper this did you.
We have a very comprehensive royalty program in place for artists they -- do -- enjoy any profits that were enjoined from this new venture.
So by the math of it I'm told the creators are quite pleased and I think any creators should be pleased to see their work and a great new medium.
If you've seen Jim -- artwork.
It's just crazy -- on a night.
A -- innovations and people expect from this from the digital comics.
You know this first step for us with comments -- and with Sony in particular.
With the iPad and the iPod and the Sony PSP but that what our readers can expect.
Globally is more devices more platforms and more partnerships.
To bring them comics everywhere they want to read.
That can show us a little bit of good news yeah sure sure.
What's great about this particular app is that it it covers.
You as a collector you is a brand new reader and and we've been pretty.
Please with the the interface across it.
You can -- -- conduct collections you can sort by creator we have all sorts of price points from three.
Two to 99399.
And we -- -- gonna continue to.
To do the price in the makes best sense.
What -- besides god had what other platforms is this -- available.
Through -- tells you dot com.
Through DC dot com it's not come by the end of the summer.
And again through our partnership with Sony and the PlayStation network so right now it's -- Fairly exclusive to apple and to Sony and our own web sites but we're going to.
She -- to Kindle has the story -- he would Detroit hasn't story got a lot of different technologies that are ready for digital comics.
We have periods and we went.
Yep and also some rice's books like supernatural and -- we've seen some of these.
Comics that are born of television properties have a a great fan following because it's already digital type behavior so.
-- quite a mix across traditional DC characters.
-- story telling.
License comics based on video games and TV and it's it's a great -- a -- problem I have figuring out what to bring out each week.
Do you feel -- that readers are more inclined to go towards digital medium.
Due to the fact that they can obviously you know bring around -- all all the time one devices with -- brown like twenty different comic books well remarks with just traditional wavered.
And other publishers have not worried about convergence like we have we're pretty keen on making sure you buy it once you can read it a lot of different places.
That was what I think is set us apart from the other publishers so part.
And that publishing -- to your point I don't think it's going to replace the traditional.
Saddle -- comic because that is pretty portable itself.
We've just heard great -- search about all different types of consumers some they just want.
A digital copy in addition what they're buying and analog let's say and then again a whole new set of readers who for whatever reason haven't gone the traditional comic -- -- around.
We're exposing them to the comic which obsolete we close the loop and drive traffic to our -- utilities.
I Clayton as promised I've got some more stuff for you these that is comic con like I said before a lot of different film studios and TV studios have.
-- at the convention -- at the box with now obviously parent company News Corp.
And some of the stuff they're doing is really just think they have a lot of stuff celebrity signings going on.
They've got the cast of white collar range American Dad! Family Guy -- -- huge hit this -- obviously.
And there even having a panel with jet Sweden and one of the other writers from doll house.
They're also giving away some exclusive and not giving way to take pre orders for some exclusive dvds -- blu -- that's specifically the alien anthology.
Now this right here is a special at comic con exclusive they're only 5000 of these being made.
And they're telling me that it's not gonna be released to the public just people who pre order here.
Alien egg -- you can see with -- around it.
And -- also obviously comes with the Blu-ray -- of the alien anthology.
So in addition they've got a lot of other stuff they've got some family -- future rom paraphernalia out there.
And right now actually they have the cast -- white collar doing signing on the other side of the -- over here so.
Gap will gonna do more walking around we're gonna hit up -- -- -- we're gonna have a little bit of it of the artist's -- for you guys so we'll be right back.
All right we're here in artist's Alley one of the more popular areas of comic on now -- -- is where.
Independent artists from all over the country can -- and showcase their work.
A lot of them hoping obviously -- seen by people from marvel and DC the two big companies.
As we walk through a little bit.
You could see this -- cool art that is shown here showcase.
Whether -- be on T shirts.
Independent comics you know just people drawing for fun.
Like these are actually some really cool ones right down here.
DC characters -- have that man.
Red lanterns and Astro as a white lantern and Superman.
Again this you know -- these people who come here they just want to showcase their work.
You can go you can by -- stills from them they can sign up for you you get really cool artwork here.
K we are here now with that Jerry Robinson as you can see is -- -- -- artist creator of the joker mister Robertson thank you for talking with us.
Very nice to meet you as well.
As -- Quick question.
What do you think of the state of comic books nowadays as compared to back when he started working in it when you created the joker stuff like that.
It's it -- arrow for us.
And then we -- kind of pioneers.
It was the first graphic novel really in the form -- comic books.
So we were inventing.
New ways to tell a story in that form.
So it was very exciting.
There was no he had -- massive -- -- -- the -- was -- to present.
Today they know there's been seven moralist generations since.
Those attracted a lot of very brilliant artists.
To have continue that form.
For example the -- as you mentioned I created in 1941.
The -- I start -- back and was sentenced -- -- is still listed -- the from university.
It's it's been details a couple years later.
And we had no idea that be that kind of phenomenon.
But we knew we had an exceptional.
Concept -- -- And villain that had a sense of humor.
Was different concept.
So the essential.
Element of the joker has remained the same so I think that -- council is.
It's unusual that it.
They characters can last on -- -- that long was somebody different interpretations.
And and visual look.
Has changed over the years but the essential core of the console is there was -- -- has endured as you know.
Speaking of adoring -- nowadays comic books are also moving into the digital realm and stuff on on the -- the iPhone and the iPad.
How do you feel that might change the comic book industry as we know it today.
The -- are always and in constant flux.
As part of the part of the art form loses a living art form so it it takes it takes a reflects a society.
And -- before the comic -- so of the comic strips.
Andy -- that there were there illustrated prince.
It's always adapts to the technology.
And technology always influenced the art and -- subversive.
It's do you foresee the comic book industry going on much further into the future.
Oh sure true.
In my taking some other different forms.
The it's a great form of storytelling.
That's what we do we tell stories saudis aren't we invent characters.
People want to follow and know.
I was in London for the filming of the Dark Knight.
And I found its universal.
The it's just in the comics wouldn't and took him back and of course the joker that time.
Lose -- worldwide.
And resist popular there.
And then performance and of course that chief Heath Ledger gave was was fantastic.
And and it was so different from Jack Nicholson.
And so different from Cesar Romero to I think that illustrates what I was trying to -- before each one gave -- -- own take on the character.
When do it.
Restaurants and thank you very much for talking with us and enjoy there is the -- Thank you.
So this is this is gadgets and games no visits at comic con would be complete without checking out the video game area.
-- comic con is not just all about comic books there are.
Sony everybody has come.
-- here promoting different movies TV shows are coming out and one of the biggest new thing.
It's our video games over here you see we've got being played the new is that one of the most anticipated games bubble -- cap com -- up.
There up top.
Basically the marvel characters versus a well known -- -- characters from their various different franchises.
As we walk along.
We've also got.
War for cyber shot.
Also one of the most highly anticipated -- it just came out that I have a week or so ago and from what I hear so far that he.
He's doing -- you might know better -- -- because you might of had just plain.
It would react Hough -- the Xbox-360.
We've got gears of war three we do halo game coming out halo reach.
We've got coming jumper which -- believe the game for Xbox Live Arcade which download online and play that's what.
Let's bring back -- -- in addition they've got some cable free stuff going on the back and I happen you know personal.
That at some point during this weekend they're going to have demonstration of the Xbox and trust me is that everybody's report plane that.
Hillary is actually prequel to the -- sale.
Takes place right before -- one.
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- coming on without.
No I did not make that brings up.
One of the big games out as well it is red -- Armageddon and I believe he scifi -- action.
There you got him Bruntlett go one of the I -- battlefield next play.
And letting people go and take that picture -- around Brian is back open golf and everybody's and I.
It's definitely -- really cool addition to coming.
Let's give -- back that's what it's all about.
Interactivity and each book is trying to one up the -- -- the next.
So let's go to the back over here because -- one last game I want to show you guys that's going on.
-- that's what.
-- and finally over here.
Rock band great.
Brand new tracks.
When I believe my talent in new drugs -- Her role as well they're -- You wanna rock out this.
-- -- -- -- I just -- lives over here that you always medal of honor.
Now metal of -- is one of the classic.
I tell you got a call of duty and you've got metal on.
-- -- -- -- is probably just Soledad the.
Player of the job.
