-- your congressman Charlie Rangel finding himself in the middle of a house panel investigation and the results not good.
Rangel said you have committed ethics violations by that house committee.
Now the last time this happened -- how extraordinary this conclusion as the accused with congressman James Traficant of Ohio.
And he was booted altogether from congress and sent straight to jail so how does -- play.
Going into these mid term elections for the Democrats Chris our -- is a Fox News contributor and political editor for the Washington examiner.
And Richard Goldstein is a former adviser for Hillary Clinton's campaign for president and adviser to Al Gore's presidential campaign gentlemen thanks so much for being here.
Our Chris let me start with you so Republicans that I gotta be enjoying this right has -- not good for Rangel.
And it's really not great for Democrats to have ethical violations of a guy this powerful.
In the new so close to November.
Well this is the this is something you're going to see more and more of this year.
Which is individual Democrats acting in their own best interest even if it hurts the party overall.
And in this case for congressman Rangel who's facing a primary challenge.
He needs to demonstrate to voters in Harlem that he's tough.
But he's not taking this lying down and that the charges against him are bogus and he's going to.
Take the extreme measure.
Try to demonstrate that he's still the man.
But what that means for his party and where this is uncomfortable for them in this is why they offered him essentially -- plea deal.
Where he could do this and admit some wrongdoing and go away.
Or at least have that matter go away that what.
What they want him to do.
That's not what he's gonna do because that's not in his personal best interest.
He's -- you know I have my question for you Richard as you know how does this play for the Democrats and obviously they don't want ethical violations in the headlines going into the mid terms.
But on the other hand can Nancy Pelosi say -- Were investigating it.
Well let's try to keep some perspective on what's the what the allegations even -- -- remember.
This is the equivalent of an indictment right and on it there should be a time that we're reminded.
Thanks to Shirley for ride that allegations don't translate into facts I think.
People -- Randall and surely you're not I its exact same thing.
An essay yeah.
I think one that cannot you can make light of it this is the equivalent of an indictment you know as a lawyer what -- and he did the statement of charges.
Which had not been proving yet okay so what Nancy Pelosi has to get high marks for though is here you have the most senior.
Member of the black caucus black caucus being a big part of the democratic constituency and the fact that the speaker is prepared to let this go forward.
Tells you something about her seriousness about this and I would say one final thing about ethics.
This is not line is though pocket this is not.
I'm sleeping with prostitutes which we have a Republican senator having said publicly.
He did it does not pay offs to death south of -- somebody had an affair with which another Republican senator.
And I think admitted to so let's keep in perspective he raise money for city college of New York.
Okay he kept his car parked in the house garage -- bass boat from the allegations here that OK but I mean they're.
-- met at -- Chris Richard there -- Richard pointedly and I'm sure not mistakenly points to the -- back accusations that.
Probably are the least disturbing there are other allegations against Charlie Rangel that are not good.
There's a little more meat on the bone.
And that relates to about taxes and reported income and vacation homes and renting out.
Rent controlled apartments and a lot of stuff that Republicans I promise we'll try to use to demonstrate that Democrats in power have become more corrupted by power.
Just as Democrats very effectively in 2000 and -- -- the litany of Republican scandal to bash the entire party not just individuals but the entire party.
And what Charlie -- doing here is saying he's gonna save his own skin or at least try to save his own skin with voters.
Rather in van help his party out by taking one for the team admitting some wrongdoing -- -- sort of -- amorphous right is what we have to remember about this it may be like an indictment.
But as you pointed out -- and congress never does this to its own unless it's absolutely -- Yeah they they don't let me ask you this -- okay so.
Everyone it's all up -- -- and ours because Charlie Rangel actually you know announced that they they said that he violated the ethics.
And now they're gonna have another committee investigate whether the first committees their conclusions were right but does anyone outside the beltway.
I mean it's like.
Do you think that this actually will be an issue for anybody going to the polls limit terms -- really paying attention to one member of congress potentially violating ethics.
Again it's an excellent question.
Let's again remember Charlie Rangel is not the chairman of the Ways and Means Committee and it anymore sandy Levin from Michigan he had to step down because of us.
Big he he did -- get the point is so right in a body of 535 people I use that to illustrations about the two Republican senators.
They think very very serious ethical violations and incidentally I can't remember the last.
Segment that Fox News had about them.
So I'm so but people -- kind of forgotten -- -- to -- Richard I mean you today got them to want today angles on the news so we're focusing on Charlie today.
That that's that's fine -- thing is that you say to people outside the beltway care will see and again.
If one party had totally clean hands that I would say yes the opposite party could really know what.
Sam -- -- the Republicans make a deal out of this the Republicans have had tons of ethical violations there at the once hidden -- -- I'm asking do.
You know the mom and pop voter who go to the polls in November.
Care you know maybe they think that Charlie -- -- have some issue I mean I guess she's a Democrat is that really didn't make them pull the lever for the Republican over the Democrats in their mid term election.
But it in public it certainly found that in 2006 that it can because you create an atmosphere these -- atmosphere.
Entitlement and corruption.
And the Republicans walked right down the path into the Democrats hands in 2006 but it -- -- -- I mean it would forbid that that there were several Republicans liberal -- brought up on several charges -- And we stop Mark Foley Ubisoft -- really.
It's really bad allegations.
Fully but look -- and if if if this is where it ends if if Charlie Rangel goes through this circus over the next couple of weeks and this goes on.
Maybe it's not maybe it's not hugely consequential.
But if it creates an availability -- and Republicans are able to point out other instances where Democrats have ethical problems and I'm sure that they're looking right now.
Certainly Darrell ice.
And other snooping Republicans are gonna try and find everything they can't if this creates an availability cascade.
It could be bad news for Democrats because it would it reinforce the notion that they've not been responsible custodians of their you -- You gotta you gotta wonder if they are snooping for that and I think people get upset they got upset of the Bush Administration gonna send this may administration is if the congressman spent all their time looking for somebody to investigate.
Instead of actually looking for you know ways to help the American people but -- has so far Charlie Rangel but his own worst enemy because you know.
These charges have been -- for a long time and.
The fact that he was often don't delete -- no apology -- to get out of this and the fact he didn't do that -- It's definitely something that you would have thought he could have had this thing go away right an apology helps a lot I got thank.
