Recent statements claiming a Tea Party movement is racist or not only destructive they -- not true.
They are a diverse group of passion Americans who want to ensure that our nation returns to founding principles.
On the constitution limit government's role in our lives enough with the name calling.
And many are asking why the civil rights organization is ignoring the new black panther voter intimidation case.
Hilary Shelton is the senior vice president for policy and advocacy for the NAACP he joins me live this morning from Kansas City mystery with the conventions being held good morning -- yourself.
And good morning -- ought to focus on here first and foremost why.
Make these claims against the Tea Party why make it a resolution during your convention that you believe the Tea Party is racist.
-- Quite frankly the resolution was moved by our Kansas City branch of the NAACP.
Any member -- was -- resolution to address its concerns -- sitting in the local area.
And across the country.
Well -- -- is a pattern of problematic.
Racist activities by some of the Tea -- -- throughout the country.
The NAACP is resolution passed actually.
Calls on the Tea Party to repudiate.
Those -- factions within the Tea Party.
And that's not -- a broader brush a call on the entire Tea Party racist that's simply not true well I don't know if -- ever seen video of the Tea Party being racist.
But it's -- that we've seen photographs.
I could very easily emailed to you photographs were taken in various parts of the country a science uses the N word to describe the president of the United States.
The flying of the -- battle flag which of course is a very you have racist symbol for so many Americans in our country.
And so many other things along those lines but in addition to that.
Members of call themselves part of the Tea Party acts involve themselves in really assaults on Capitol Hill during the passage of the -- young landmark health care bill.
As a matter fact congressman Rahm Emanuel Cleaver.
What's called the -- word I suddenly represented themselves as a member of the team partisan and Tea Party read the Tea Party put a program on Capitol Hill.
Let me also played this particular piece of video though because I wanna be your reaction to this this is from the new -- Black Panther Party -- -- Hey why.
All of that.
Every last I don't of the track got maybe a quick hello to back man they look at film that we don't like doing I don't standalone.
-- -- -- -- -- -- Why not include the new black party panther party -- the new Black Panther Party why not include them in -- -- Well there was a separate resolution that repudiate them as well quite frankly those kind of statements have no place in -- civilized political society.
And it should be repudiated as well as we do with -- is just awful.
Sheldon coming out this morning reverend Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton both.
This resolution saying that the focus for the NAACP should be on jobs and the upcoming march in Washington.
How would you respond with such as prominent African Americans.
Well they didn't renounce that what they said this is important for us achieve our eyes on the prize that indeed -- issues concerns of incivility.
By those aspects of the Tea Party are important.
But it's important -- -- we're taking on those issues of race is an injection within the Tea Party movement that we don't lose -- of the prize the prizes.
Making sure they have good jobs for all Americans -- surprises me.
Sure having good I published -- Muslim Americans and most Americans would which would think to themselves that if that Jackson and Sharpton come out and actually -- a comment like that.
That that they probably don't agree with this resolution that you were discussing that with -- part of the Tea Party one last question.
Some accusations have been made that the reason that you brought this resolution to the forefront of the American minds right now is because you're trying to encourage.
The African American base to come out and vote in the mid term elections.
That out -- there was no discussion of anything along those lines the primary focus is the lack of civility.
And quite frankly the escalating concerns around violence.
The experiences we had during the health care debate where goes to show that people would very well escalate some of these problems and actually involve themselves in violence.
In addition to the racist rhetoric but would you agree.
That that's the fringe element of the Tea Party just as you said that Shabazz is the fringe elements of the new Black Panther Party.
All I would have no problem accepted that the issue is the need to actually repudiate it very well so people know it's not part.
And if you don't repudiated those kind of things as we -- those statements made by the new Black Panther Party.
That is assume that is part of your movement as well -- -- that is extremely problematic -- I think the Tea Party and activists have done just that.
-- -- definitely appreciate your opinions this morning thank you so much for joining us.
