Welcome back everybody re joined right now by Republicans editor Scott Brown of Massachusetts is is its first national TV interview since becoming senator.
-- -- very good -- I apologize for earlier problems senator.
It's okay you adjust and adapt -- it's okay all right I think CNN was controlling my feet I apologize I -- -- -- in all seriousness senator this happens -- a day week.
We have this increasing plane crash in in Austin Texas.
And we have a guy who's -- ranting at the system -- at the IRS granted the government.
The need for health care than not the need for unions getting special I.
Really crazy stuff.
-- your reaction.
Well it certainly tragic and I feel for the families so obviously they're being affected by it.
And I don't know if it's related that I can just sense it is not only in my election that since being here in Washington people are frustrated they want.
Transparency they want their elected officials to be accountable and open -- And you know talk about these things that are affecting their daily lives so I'm not sure if there's a connection I I certainly hope not but.
And we need to do things better.
I'm you know invariably people are gonna look at this attractive incidents senate say well that's where some of his populist rage -- -- on.
It's that it's time.
Well yeah of course is extreme you don't know anything about the individually could have had other issues certainly -- no one likes paying taxes obviously.
But the -- we're trying to deal with things and have been in the past at least until I got here is there's such a logjam and and in Washington.
And people want -- to do better they want us to help solve the problems that are affecting Americans and a and a very real way.
And I think we I'm hopeful that we can do that with a lot of things that are coming forward at least what I'm hearing to and speaking of my colleagues there seems to be a different feel.
There's kind of a message that was central my election the fact that -- I was you know pretty elected by a substantial margin in.
Taking the former Ted Kennedy seat that they want they want somebody different they want differences up here and I'm hopeful that's going to happen.
You don't have both sides obviously want to work we're doing a Harry Reid is that news talked over the weekend maybe you -- -- -- this jobs bill this new jobs initiative.
A mixed blessing not a thing because the Joe Biden is criticizing over the weekend.
How are you adapting just of that.
-- you know -- gives -- the vagaries of Washington.
Well it's no different it's just that a larger scale and -- out of office for almost nineteen years.
Being a Republican in Massachusetts five out of forty in the in the state senate.
Then coming here the vice president you know obviously took a swipe at me saying I didn't understand that -- attorneys and military tribunals will have his say do because I'm one of them.
I'm I'm a military attorney been -- for thirty years still serving.
He's missing the point he's trying to shifted away from the administration's.
I think mistake -- not to treating these people as enemy combatants interrogating and pursuant to the applicable laws.
And then instead of giving -- thousand dollar an -- attorneys.
Taxpayer expense and giving them rights and privileges that they're not entitled to.
We should have -- be represented by captain -- major lieutenant colonel.
At taxpayer expense and a military tribunal setting so that's the first thing the second thing obviously that -- -- majority -- did really did reach out to me majority leader.
And I was thankful for that we are analyzing the bill and sometimes will be the sixtieth senator other times of the of the 41 senator.
And that's the beauty of being in this position and I'm looking forward to the challenges when would you be voting for this fifteen billion dollar jobs to what you know -- that's -- Well the first thing I know look at first -- one from what 87 billion down to fifteen billion so that there's a strike if that's -- in the good column.
And then I'm gonna we're obviously analyzing right now we've had people come in and help you in some areas right wasn't.
Totally familiar with but there's some good good parts -- and there's some parts from hopeful we can get and open and honest discussion about.
Maybe amending certain parts to make it better.
We've is that there's there's many different ideas that there in and my goal.
I'm hopeful that the leaders goal in the minority whose goal is to get something that gets people back to work as people are hurting they want to work.
Americans -- the hardest workers in the world and they want to have the tools to do that.
And there's a role for -- the federal government that the federal government also -- snow went to -- -- -- the way.
Senator -- the president status is -- commission today.
But it gonna.
What is gonna tell us -- in -- here we we already know -- and that we already know or overspending we've raised the debt ceiling to almost thirteen trillion dollars at some point.
And it's out of control we need to get a handle on spending.
I've obviously been pushing them during election from across the board tax cut but had a payroll tax reduction.
To get the economy immediately jolt we need bold new leadership on these very important fiscal issues to get our house in order.
Commissions gonna tell us for overspending -- we already know it let's move on and start solving some problems.
Our meticulous and I guess we'll have anywhere from nine months to close to be -- to decide that by that time we could be in a bigger.
Of course recruitment and I think -- they should just say yes we're in trouble we need to start working everybody knows that.
And it's it's a waste of paper as far as I'm concerned we need to start focusing on putting people back to work and we're not gonna do it by a -- commissioner.
Are other things need to take bold action.
You know put a freeze on on spending put for a freeze and certain parts of spending obviously.
A freeze on federal hires and and and pay increases.
And obviously doing a top to bottom review of every federal program coupled with the tax cuts in the payroll tax reductions to offer incentives for businesses to -- start to.
To hire and working get that economic engine because once we do that -- you get the economic engine going.
Everything also fallen to place will be the not only in the military power in the world of movie the economic power.
And that'll give us the ability to do those all those other things that people really come to expect.
Senator we meant to divide a little while ago he had said.
And it is separate news CBS that we understand why they're angry referring to voters.
We did it Watson and right now is broken.
-- -- -- Well I'm hope I'm glad I could help you know contribute to the vice president's.
Knowledge of what's going -- out there because I can tell you people in my state where are incensed at the way Washington is doing the backroom deals the -- to -- that happened with the administration.
In the health care bills to think that Massachusetts would be subsidizing.
Other states with Medicaid payments and and that special interest groups are getting -- -- it's not that's not the thing that that we wanted.
And I'm I'm hopeful -- have that they recognize it but if they're gonna try to do it and move on have reconciliation to put another version of health care through.
Without having the transparency I guarantee you -- have.
Repercussions come 2010.
I'm I'd be curious we talk about freezing in spending all this sort of -- would you go wider than the president is presently doing in other words would you be open.
Some of the so called sacred entitlement programs like Medicare and Social Security.
On that freeze list as well.
Well I -- supporter Judd Greg's efforts to have an up and down almost like a bracket base closure commission situation.
I eight commended publicly the president's move when the when they didn't allow for that to move forward to do it through executive order I think it's a good first step so I would I would be willing to look at an up -- down.
Type of vote on something like that.
I'm you don't do a number of Republicans have been looking at the economic data lately senator and saying well it's -- pretty bad it is improving.
And that this thought that -- elections that were phenomenons like you ports.
On could prove to be short -- events for Republicans that by November.
We could see a steady stream of a good news that will deny -- the added it is -- victory though a lot of Republicans are counting on when you think.
Well always fed millions of job losses right now -- what last month of the month before they had 85000.
That month and they revise -- to -- right all right 150000.
-- be a little often those numbers this month again we had.
My job loss obviously those are those are improving but also the weather's improving we're coming into the spring.
There's going to be more economic activity naturally I'm very very concerned about the -- that we have.
How are kids and grandkids gonna repay the amazing amount of that there were occurring and that debt service is is just so burdensome right now that.
All the other things that we want to try to do whether it's for the people and the arts of it.
The military education -- where's that money coming from and we need to get a handle on this before it's too late.
The senator I'd be remiss of of of getting reports now that you are going to be introducing Mitt Romney.
That the sea -- conference and you did it good and India and I know that you and and and the former governor quite close.
You -- are dying for.
-- -- -- Well I'm not sure what his plans are but I -- I -- I was honored that he asked me to introduce him and we've had a long relationship when I ran for the United States sorry for the mass senate he was the he was -- one of the first ones and when I ran for the United States senator senate he was the only one him and Senator McCain that actually stepped up and encouraged me gave gave me -- guidance and I was honored to be there and and I didn't you -- from all of the speech had other things I'm obviously doing that I was honored to be there for him.
I'm told you were rock star.
And I enjoy music if that's.
I'm you don't win a number of interviews senator -- -- -- deep into your sort of maverick reputation you -- It expressed particular admiration for now efforts like John McCain Joe Lieberman.
On neither very conservative.
So what are you.
But if you know people try to try to pigeonhole me pigeonhole me my whole life and I -- I'm Scott Brown from around them -- still -- -- -- is right right across a sandy -- and death.
And think that I had a present the four wheel drive wherever else is walking -- and editing as as a -- and driver in Washington for a drive look out.
-- I'm gonna look at each and every bill as I said sometimes they'll be the sexiest senator other times will be the 41 senator.
You can't tell me they -- that there are good people on both sides of these issues they can't come together to try to solve a very real problems and I don't know -- -- to explain it -- people don't know a lot of me but if they look at my history I've worked with on both sides of the as a Republican from Massachusetts I've had to and they the other senators not used to that on both sides of the I'll.
They -- once again if I have my being here has opened things up to the point where we're going to start solving these very real.
-- security national security and we as how we deal with terrorism.
How we deal with the economic problems that are facing our businesses both large and small how we get a hold of -- the issues that are facing.
Everybody on a daily basis take going -- -- dinner going to the movies putting his two college paying mortgage.
I'm very thankful for that I've I've done one thing to shake up Washington I can rest happy.
Due more to the tea party movement.
But the Republican.
Party both suggesting you know people say you know telling about the tea party movement I have great respect for every person who wants to get involved with politics and when of people working -- -- come up to they can try to receive on the tea party personally and have hats and then in insurance.
They came up and said -- I am so and so I want to help you.
And what the tea party movement I understand means is that people are fed up with the way the government is overspending.
Moving more and mean controlling her every day decisions in our lives.
And they want to make sure that they get a handle on the federal government gets a handle on the spending -- yeah I agree -- that I think many Americans agree with that.
So -- to stop the spending and stop the tax increasing and have conversation.
Then good for them for getting involved in good for everybody else getting involved I don't care what political party you're from.
Bottom line is Washington is broken right now and and and we need to start to get give back to basics.
Because as terrorists are trying to kill us at our malls and our airports.
I for one want to make sure that my kids in my family are safe.
And I want to make sure that we handled that problem.
First an addition to dealing with our economy because if we don't do those two very important thing -- everything else is secondary.
I'm on the economy senator don't mind that we we.
Signs today that inflation's.
Popping up again wholesale inflation rising more than expected.
Indications the Federal Reserve could be hiking rates sooner rather than later.
Are you worried that we could be and floor.
Jimmy Carter -- stagflation -- history.
I'm not sure.
Guys you know I'm new here we we have people that are coming in to help analyze everything that's going on you know I don't have business cards that are opposite happened Alberta.
We had a brother had -- -- to come back and talk -- -- about fiscal policy but all I know is the amount of out of control spending that we have.
The out of control debt that we were incurring.
Something's gotta give somewhere.
It's an and it's it's gonna happen I think sooner rather than later and I'm hopeful that we can work together to just try to solve those problems.
You know units of the truck earlier I mentioned -- number times the president mentioned almost condescending way and it's like yeah yeah thank.
What did you think about that.
No I had told them and I asked them honest when he called me -- victory -- listen the united wanted to bring the tracked down because Miami want to accept that.
And and I reverend -- campaigning I said listen you can criticize my policy you can criticize my votes.
But don't criticize.
Don't criticize my truck and people of the news is lot of fun now.
-- score a lot of points and a truck you're also scoring points nationally at some of these polls believe it or not I guess could be too surprising.
-- -- Republican -- some have you as high as third or fourth in the -- points while presidential race.
-- -- Well it's certainly flattering but was I said before I I don't have I see the -- -- the pole right there I don't even have business card.
The only candidate talking about those those those types opposing view I'm very you'd have more experienced senators then that the president -- -- -- White -- coming.
Well whatever I'm not even a comment on just so anxious to get to work and look forward to working from Massachusetts it's that you guys have found that.
That and I will Scott Brown thank you very much.
Thank you and thanks for having me back on after the technical difficulties.
