-- welcome -- -- -- game Mike -- and here we talk about mixed martial -- we talk a lot about the tools that a mixed martial artist brings into the cage with -- whether it's Brazilian jujitsu we type kick boxing wrestling boxing.
These guys have to be well rounded.
In all of these disciplines but an up -- with these skills how to get them when they hired great trainers what are the best trainers in the business issue on top is joins us now.
Tell me how many fighters have you had this year this year have been twenty professional fighters all the top -- stormed the -- so -- -- is a year from.
And your bridge and out team Tompkins.
Your formally with extreme couture an eagle and -- -- -- -- -- in in Las Vegas -- -- bureau set about -- tell us about that.
Real excited I mean this week has been a huge week of transformation from me.
I'm going back to mile style and in and really like you said re branding myself team Tompkins starting my own team at the top of facility in Las Vegas and you know -- some some some great experiences behind me but I'm excited about having a lot better -- And you know you're gonna have I've been to that Jim and I know could go out there such a beautiful places like 20000 square feet get lots -- -- -- you've got everything you could possibly need.
Tell me about the next generation of Jim's just like this -- you go to now.
I mean what do fighters.
Need to become great fighters.
Well -- this sort of gyms and the putting together are such a multi multifaceted area I mean.
You've got management -- -- -- -- in place you've got a real business there.
He got sponsorship opportunities and you -- facilities that -- allow these these fighters to do whatever -- whatever it takes to win fights.
You know the best Brazilian jujitsu coaches he distributed conditioning coaches that are second to nine and -- people -- can put the whole game together.
You -- put an -- game together.
January 2 you may get you may bring vitro Belfour when your clients -- you train.
Into the octagon against Anderson so how do you prepare a guy for such a great fighter like Anderson.
Well Anderson's -- some might -- we're gonna -- some to find some consistencies and you know he he's known as as the best to one of the best for a reason so I've got to go out and I'm gonna look at this tapes I'm gonna -- inconsistencies especially the last few fights and he's done.
But I mean as far as as as opportunity.
I mean who -- sold out there's going to be able to step -- be -- forest has Anderson really seen somebody as.
And as it as good striker is Belfour I don't think so no not not since he's been in the USC absolutely not.
And I think it's a -- -- -- for a lot of people ask me you know as you've got you know becoming you on Friday you.
You got you'll be -- back it's not you'll be towards a brand new vitro Belfour but this the guy the to walk into it to boxing tomorrow be in the top ten as a pro.
You know he's I don't think Anderson's anybody would -- -- feet I don't think he's anybody that's not well rounded.
Know when you have young fighters coming up the mean.
I remember you had a team in the IFL so you're coaching there ain't got a lot of young guys coming in how do you prepare them for.
The business of and then made because you're not just a trader in in their striking and in their game plans -- -- degree really be like a Big Brother to them don't you.
Absolutely you know there's a lot of responsibilities.
Effort especially for myself as a coach I think it is a responsibility.
And I think the biggest thing in -- -- coming -- new fighter bring in new fighter along his.
Introducing into the right people in the game because the game of mixed martial arts is is moving so quickly to -- quickly there's good people involved and now we're sorry to see there's some bad people.
Some people that want to -- -- the right way and some that just wanna make money off these guys sell.
I'm a big part of it is is giving them the right direction telling them who their management team should be.
Making sure there with the right sponsorship teams and of course getting with the rate promoters you know to get them to a show like the U -- -- Right so.
Let's talk a little bit about one of those guys who whose troubled when your guys Jeannie Browning.
How do you take what would you he's gone through and apply it to training and apply to his life and it's sort of make him learn and and progress from what -- -- from what he's done recently.
Well first and foremost in -- -- isn't your typical fighter you know he he came to me and he has he has the mental issues he has to deal with and we have to have to work on together you know -- He suffers from severe depression he's bipolar so we have to get that in check first first and foremost is like I said be you know before it's.
We have to make a better human being before a great fighter happens and with him that's so that we have to do I would like to consistently seem continue to fight.
Because that's when he's been at his best when he came to me after the Ultimate Fighter to -- show he turned himself around he was a great person he was going in the right direction.
And I just noticed in the last a while he hasn't had a -- booked and things started to slip you know and so you know I -- to try to put all of those things together just in help guide him.
Now 27 fighters I mean there's only so many fights in the year.
How do you.
Coach patients to some -- your clients.
Well every fighter in this is the -- part of my job is every fighters different they're different type of person some of them come with patients a lot of them don't.
-- and it's just getting them in the right direction and again a big part of what I do to help comes from the management teams you know there's there's a lot of great management teams out there.
And and we really need them to be in place.
The struggle a bit about you have seen in general I mean the talent is so broad and every week class it seems is stacked.
Both -- -- the to a five week class for second.
You looking at.
Lyoto Machida the Arabic he's got to fight against Shogun who -- coming up.
Do you think that everybody is looking past show that -- and is that legitimate should they be the compassionate and if you're in -- Machida can't.
I'm a huge believer Machida and and I agree with -- -- I think we are in an era of Machida I don't think that anybody right now.
Can match his timing or his speed or more specifically his style of fight.
Com I've always said that you know it's gonna take a great wrestler.
But a well rounded -- revealed to beat him to deal taken -- have the patience to hold in there and not worry about the crowd booing a little bit.
But right now with Machida I I don't see the Shogun fight going any differently than the Rashad -- maybe a little quicker I just think Shogun doesn't have.
The timing and he -- he puts one point you won't -- together that's -- the most of the his no consistency.
-- the big fight coming up Brett Rogers vs the door for derby says it's a path for pound best fighter in the world or or at least he's a consensus best heavyweight in the world.
But I I kind of like Fred in his fight because breast that's -- huge hands.
And he's knocked people out he's not everybody and I I don't think people are gonna be so quick to count amount after the -- -- can knock out.
-- you know Brett Rogers definitely got his name out there I don't know he's at the same level as the door.
And we've all seen for -- don't go against some good strikers before and he's he's found a way to -- to finish them you know whether or get him to the match or beat him at their own game so.
I'm not I'm not too quick to Tibet against the door just for the fact -- I think he has.
Much more experience and he brings it -- -- evil -- the cage for it.
Top ten finale is are great card and you know two of our friends and local guys here.
Are fighting one another Frankie Edgar vs Kurt Pellegrino Frankie is a fight not analyst here at fox like game Kurt Pellegrino is a guy that I -- with -- well -- just.
But two great guys I hate to see them go against one another food but it it has to happen.
And first -- when you when you have friends fighting we have guys that know each other fighting heavy -- prepare for that he would.
It's -- really hard and I mean it happens to me a lot because.
I mean -- myself in the sport and I'm not just dedicated just to my team and you know everybody else doesn't exist I have a lot of friends in the game you know one of my best friends in the sport is -- -- -- You know we look across each other in the -- all the -- so.
-- it's a tough thing but that it it's a point where I had to step back and say you know it's just sport you know -- the best man win and we know in the sport that even the guy that everybody bets on doesn't always win.
Alright so -- brought to the point two you did traders are as famous as the fighters these days.
He got shall atop any you've got crew Phil nurse mark -- a variety Greg Jackson -- up in up in Canada and I'm sure I'm missing a few.
How do you how do you guys come to terms with ego yourself.
Well I think that it's a great thing that we are actually getting some attention because there is much more to this game than just the fighters you know I -- -- -- you -- you know this.
The Joseph Rogan -- you know the Joseph syllabus.
You know the Bruce -- there's more to this game than just the fighters.
And if people really wanna follow the game as closely as they should be you know the fighters in the -- should be getting you know close the same respect and we put a lot of time a lot of effort into it.
Armed you know it's we're not just rolling dice every time we go out there you know there is consistencies in what we do.
And and I mean myself with the coach I'm gonna enjoy a little bit of of what the famously comes with a.
-- you know -- you brought that point to Joseph Rogan and Bruce buffer.
-- of the -- -- big John McCarthy.
Me we -- mixed martial arts.
-- is -- -- be tough guys it's because we have to understand when you guys go through.
How important is -- for somebody -- side.
Of the desk to know what the heck I'm talking about I have to be there don't act well that makes our job a lot easier you know.
To be able to try to get paid to explain to everybody in the world what mixed martial arts is on a daily basis from my standpoint -- fighters -- point.
We need people like you that can go -- there's say you know listen I've got another job.
I'm not gonna go defend myself on the weekend and try to win a bunch of money.
You know we need that that person -- can can relate to the to the average person out there that to tell them what mixed martial -- truly is about.
OK so say on the coming young up -- -- fighter I come you -- say what do I need first of -- you'll evaluate he's a fighter.
But to do lagged like Austria box into a -- -- wrestling obviously it all -- in your valuation but what is it what other steps to become in the real mixed martial artist.
Well I mean really finding the first and foremost you've got to find a good gym you know there's a lot of -- out there especially with it the way enemy is now everybody this kid that's had a fitness gym has.
You know -- put on the window.
You know so it's finding the right coach is fighting the -- atmosphere that works for you are getting with a team you know team is very important sport and we all know it's an individual sport.
But when it comes to developing yourself -- you do you need to support staff so finding a good team is most important.
After that -- telling people around that team.
Well you know you don't really need any more than five people you know there's some huge teams out there there's some teams that are real successful smaller numbers.
Arm but you need people that you can work with in the you can trust you know on a sparring basis when you're training.
As a trainer and -- in in a student and management as well you know people that you can distrust you don't need more than.
More than five but if you do have a bigger team -- you know on this team -- -- ATT there are some of the you know the whole gym is basically fight team grounded do it's it's an amazing numbers so.
You know when you go past that didn't just getting plugged into the right organization and in -- the rest is just up -- you really is a comfort level I mean it's the people you train -- -- the instructors you have to -- as you have.
You know it really is because I see guys that are coming into the sport right now I don't know -- their trainer has but they belong in the sport.
You know so there's some great teams out -- that are being developed in some trainers that.
Haven't got -- the publicity that maybe myself for Jackson or.
You know don't guardian have gone bullets there's some great teams that are on the way up and -- I I'm excited to hear about them right so.
Before that you go team Tompkins.
You're -- -- be located at the technology in in Las Vegas about a displays -- -- -- it's a beautiful -- and you're so lucky to be there it's just awesome.
What else comes with comes -- team Tompkins is there a clothing line is there some like your line -- what's next for you.
Well I mean I'm gonna travel every every bosses sport that I can you know -- have people working on -- on a signature series equipment line that I think is real important -- for the students of the of the game because you know I know the equipment better than anybody else does.
You know obviously clothing I'm involved in in top bode very very -- they have been for a couple years and you know there's there's people like that you know that I got that click skyscraper in podcast were always dreamed of being behind me so becoming part of that -- -- team has been really important to me for a long time so.
You know the avenues and I'm gonna take there's a lot of them.
Right he could have skyscraper August they were just on a show couple weeks ago so he showed up to you guys also you can follow.
Scrape on Twitter believe it or not.
It's -- out scrape.
At Twitter twitter.com slash -- desperate that you want but I'm not twittering yet I don't get is Twitter account certainly is not twittering the Dell's Twitter and I got when he fighters to take your pick -- up.
I'll let them Twitter for me.
Well good luck to you good -- I get every second of the -- comes through because that's a play I think all the fans wanna say everybody wants to see it you know and we just have that we all we need is Anderson solutions to kick once deported from the piece of paper and it's Juarez.
Come let's make this -- happen.
All right chuck Tompkins thanks a -- an -- have a great coming in thinks it really appreciated.
