-- guess we'll earlier we went to Capitol Hill where Republican senator Richard Shelby went on the record about health care.
Afghanistan and more.
Senator Shelby thank you so much for taking time -- to go on the record with us thank you we appreciate it.
-- -- -- talking about health care consuming a lot of the energy and attention over here obviously in the senate.
I wanna refer to something he said to our Chris Wallace back in June in talking about what the president was proposing at that point.
Said it could be the first step in destroying the best health care system the world has ever known.
As this has played out do you think that's what's -- then.
I think that's what's about to happen.
Between not able to stop what's going on in and -- the Democrats have the numbers this is the question in new.
React to what come naturally we don't know exactly what that movie has yet but we do have the best health care in the world.
Maybe -- not for everybody but why destroy in this system.
And sorrow over and get the government so involved in it when there are a lot of their options that we could -- -- -- on the best health care.
And I know the president's talked about it in his last major health care speech you talked about the idea of bipartisanship and he's continued to echo that.
But just about every Republican I've talked to has said we have floated ideas we have our own bills.
We're not getting any traction though with the White House has that been your experience -- Think that's exactly right I think the Democrats so led by the president as far -- determined most.
To force not a health care bill on the American people that most Americans and according to -- really polls don't loan.
And most people don't need most people in America the majority overwhelming majority are basically.
Satisfied with the health care.
And and the majority of Americans we know from our polling at fox 90% plus have health care so I know it's convincing people that already have health care.
-- possibly give up a system that is in some -- working for them.
And the senate finance that committee version that came out yesterday with the help of Republican senator Olympia -- vote.
Still only covers 94% of Americans do you think that's enough of a change -- coverage to justify what their proposal and a half.
Absolutely not this is going to -- so much money.
-- as far as taxes.
Perhaps cuts of Medicare and Medicaid if what if what -- that proposal goes group.
This is not they'll be a panacea and this is not don't solve our health care problems he could exacerbate what we have today.
Of course we haven't seen the marriage the finance bill with the health committee bill.
-- that -- that can be and Christine.
I think it would be put together but I'd say from my what I know about it now he won't be good for America.
What's your reaction to senator -- vote yesterday well I was this point I was hoping.
That she would go mobile with the movement I'm rest of the Republicans.
And would not do that but you know she has to answer that question -- -- I've known Olympia alone time we serve in the house together.
But how that might be coming down the road she kind of signal that from time to time but maybe maybe she'll change her mind.
Maybe she'll change her mind and maybe they'll be some Democrats to change their mind once they see.
What kind of deal they ultimately put together because he's going to be a combination obviously of them -- this building came out.
And and -- what came out of the health committee.
With the government option and so forth.
Class I wouldn't.
Did you just say it this early juncture he will not be a good deal.
You mentioned the public option -- government run option and it wasn't part of the baucus proposal but.
Just shortly after the vote we heard senator.
Nelson from Florida say.
-- public option may come back on the floor.
We make an -- -- I've always thought he would as soon as they got the bill out of the committee to the floor.
And -- where they have more maneuverability.
And the leadership.
That they will -- fade from the field -- they can ram the public option down descended down the throats of the American people they're determined to do it.
I want to turn now to some international issues and ask you about Afghanistan we know the president is meeting with some of his top national security folks again today.
In making those decisions about whether more troops we'll go to Afghanistan.
What's your take on the situation timeline so far well.
Is -- wavering one way and then another.
From my perspective.
I believe at the end of the day he should listen to General McChrystal.
And he should listen the secretary of defense gates and ultimately he ought to listen to General Petraeus General Petraeus was the -- -- today.
-- was originated and going.
There help stabilize opinions that war.
-- at least a lot more in Iraq.
All week we've got to do something like -- I would say is exactly the same.
-- or lose the whole country and Afghanistan.
He ought to listen to the commanders.
We should not -- cut and run.
Out of Afghanistan we've been there a long time we probably.
He nor need to too much with a lot of emphasis on Iraq but it's very important.
He won't created if we leave it won't create the biggest haven.
-- -- -- -- -- And then ask you last Friday the president was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
And there's been a lot of speculation about exactly what that was about whether it was efforts he's -- undertaken or a promise or.
Something for the future.
Do you think it will impact at all the decisions he's making about Afghanistan is there pressure on him now from the international community in any way that there wasn't before the prize was awarded.
Well I thought the prize was premature.
The idea you know it's always good -- American American -- -- -- -- -- -- get a warning bit.
I don't believe that he's earned it yet maybe he will.
But I think the -- in the United States whoever he or she might be.
Should not worry about public opinion around the world should worry about the security in this nation.
Senator Shelby thank you very much again can't.
