Go bipartisan or go by Republicans the White House today denying reports it really doesn't need to -- you know overall health care report spurred by the way from comments made this morning by the president's own chief of staff.
John -- meanwhile the leading Republican in the house saying the Democrats want to win this thing through with -- without -- party.
Is that a good idea Democrats go it alone let's as governor Ed Rendell the democratic governor of Pennsylvania good to have you governor -- -- Thanks to you if you are you worried that that happens.
Yeah I do I would have liked to have seen a bipartisan health care bill where we came together and put -- idol this baloney.
-- but it's hard if your President Obama and you see what a lot of the Republican congressional leaders have done and misleading the country.
It's pretty hard to think that there's any potential for bipartisanship.
Even senator Grassley.
Who I have publicly said I think on your show that I had a lot of confidence and it did would try to fashion a bipartisan approach for him to talk about the death squads -- knows that the death squads -- a bunch of BS.
And did nothing in the bill ever would have given the government the right to terminate you have a someone's life and yet they continue to propagate this notion to scare the people.
Given that it's pretty hard to -- to have a bipartisan sense that we can do something here.
Well whether the -- -- that was an accurate charge or not governors you know even some moderate Democrats said maybe we.
We -- this language on this so called and double life surely remove the language track.
Remove the language because the language was distracting but the language never said that the government and I'm not just citadel it was like all right I'm not into sit in and a lot of hyperbole but I -- -- -- -- talking about.
Even moderate to conservative Democrats -- these blue dog Democrats you so much talk about governor who are antsy about the reform package the way it's looking now.
And and who might not be committed on on supporting this now what do you make of a division -- democratic -- Well -- there's serious questions about a public option.
But understand one thing -- I think we all agree and I know our producer had to we've got to reduce the cost of the health care delivery system.
And one of the key ways we do that is by competition.
In Pennsylvania today we have virtually no competition in any of our region's.
We have one primary carrier.
Who dictates what the prices are going to be to the consumers.
Who dictates what the reimbursements are going to be to the hospitals and unless we get inject competition into that system.
Work cooked so either you have a public option or you have strict regulation over these HMOs and -- -- They just littered the federal government Democrats are shooting themselves in the sense that I had -- -- you're numerous members Arlen Specter.
When he was commenting on the protesters themselves this is tomorrow -- start.
I have been doing these town ratings for thirty years.
-- vicious and this is different.
Portrait one point focus on is that.
The groups are not necessarily representative of America.
You know he said that and -- we see these polls where he's throwing Pat Toomey by a dozen points I'm not sure there's a quid pro quo relationship there but.
Do you think that helped his cause.
And then now.
I probably would have said that after -- -- But I don't blame the protesters and -- because they've been misled.
They've been lied to by a very important people on the media and they've been lied to by a very important high ranking Republican politicians.
And that's what the most discouraging thing is here if we really wanted to.
Frame of bipartisan approach to health care by the senator Grassley last -- and go back to Iowa and continue to talk about -- Yeah the but I mean -- -- -- minute -- they were allied to its dividend and it did but some of the wanna just.
Beyond the that the panel questions they wanted to -- how you gonna pay for it they didn't add up and have to man up.
They wanted to know how you gonna cover everyone in this won't tax other folks -- on the rich and that didn't add up.
A lot of basic questions are being nasty and about.
Does the simple human nature logic that.
If if you got more people in the system with a finite number of doctors and radiologist and MRI in the scenes along.
There's going to be a wait for all of the above and and no one had -- -- -- Republican or Democrats in that.
That's what they got pistol -- And I think the problem is they're too many plans right now.
There -- three or four or five different plans and I don't think the president's made it clear enough what his specific answers are to those questions.
And I also don't think we're doing a very good job and I think I faulted Democrats up for this insane to people remember.
Anything's better than the status quo.
The status quo is -- people out of health care coverage in Pennsylvania alone in the last seven years.
People have lost employer based health care coverage 600000 people health care inflation is 75%.
I didn't get you know governor you know tell -- and I don't know if that argument out I don't know whether -- is a PR I really just a map there.
But I think intrinsic in the -- of the democrats' argument on reform.
Was telling the 90% or some Americans who have health care who -- by and large happy with a not -- Banco do it across the board.
That they have an obligation to sort of -- for the 10% of down and that 90%.
I don't think you guys ever.
Ever talk to them I think you addressing the 10% who didn't and and the 90% in Baghdad Jim said what.
Well I think President Obama did at the very beginning he said if you like the health care you've got.
You can keep it and that was a clear and -- consistent message by the president but remember there are a lot of people and they just.
That he didn't have -- -- -- -- zones say that was guaranteed and I think I agree that there -- leading edges and that's been an -- congress one of them doesn't really.
How much room for the private insurance guys he can't blame the folks at these rallies and saying well you're saying one thing big guy but you're not say and and -- a lot.
And I agree with -- -- I think that there's too many bills that they're not enough clarity but the president's been clear about that if you like to health care you've got to get to keep it.
But remember you may like to health -- you -- you have -- But all of a sudden you get cancer and wants to period of coverages over -- health care company drops you they -- that up.
All the time will always -- but you never got those points that I'm not saying these things that -- like what I am wondering now governor is.
Will probably get some former health care will be a watered down version and I know Democrats are seizing on the notion that I have below will be better than no -- But is that what you think Democrats of.
Resign themselves to.
I think that that's too -- a question answer I think there -- some Democrats.
Who say to themselves let's just get something and say we've got declare victory.
But there are a lot of other Democrats and I'm one of them who believe we've got to do it right and that takes more time.
Let's take more time and if we can get some responsible Republicans back into the game in -- in this.
By all means let's do it but again.
I can't tell you how disappointed I wasn't senator Grassley who you've heard me praise night for him to go and raise the Specter of death panels and Iowa.
As -- as this past weekend.
He's dead in their eyes are let let me it yeah I think we'll look at the Democrats and I don't resent.
Bringing in more star power that you brought Bill Cosby and your state today to talk about it -- in advance for your state is making.
-- Democrats might wanna do this is everyone likes Bill Cosby and and you were pitching what.
To the point.
We're -- to make sure that there's no cuts in our education budget the great news we had today -- was -- Pennsylvania ranked as the only state in the nation.
In the last six years to made advances in every facet of the public tests mean.
Elementary school middle school high school reading match.
Every level Pennsylvania was the only state to make significant achievement that doesn't mean our education systems where it should be.
But we've made great achievement and we're fighting now to make sure that there are no cuts made to this year's education budget that's what our budget fights all about.
But that you were also not to -- realize what you did today but you're pretty good PR you've got the message out with a certifiable bipartisan star.
Republicans eleven Democrats suddenly has a message that appeals -- -- well spoken about educate -- absolutely absolutely at his own story is is is very inspirational not regard.
Do you think Democrats need to do something like that I don't know whether it's Tom Hanks or whatever les -- I think to -- sip of people who are celebrities for whatever reason can be effective.
If they've been participants and have spoken out in the past if they have a record of of talking about health care talking about education.
Just to try to -- out who has an ever had a at any nexus to the health care debate doesn't make sense but I remember when we went around.
In 2000 when I was democratic chair.
We -- -- -- Morgan Fairchild Morgan was an expert on environmental issues.
And had been a fighter for environmental causes so she had a lot of credibility when she spoke so I think that that -- Cosby of course has tremendous credibility image.
All right you guys do a lot worse than Morgan Fairchild that's all I'm saying governor.
Very good having you thank you be well thanks -- governor governor Ed Rendell.
