Welcome back longtime senator Arlen Specter facing a -- senate primary today in Pennsylvania he squaring off against representative Josef stack who we just spoke to.
Critics say the anti incumbent mood among voters could wind up costing the thirty year veteran his job.
You're away in this Pennsylvania governor Ed Rendell good morning to governor.
The -- And your supporter of Arlen Specter you say that he's done a great job for Pennsylvania and I'm wondering if you feel but he did a better job as a Republican or Democrat.
It never -- Arlen Specter you know what I was mayor of Philadelphia for eight years.
He was a Republican and every time I call him to help Philadelphia he did it and he did it effectively he didn't say that's a city where -- only got 28% of the vote.
He rolled up his sleeves and went to work for Philadelphia just like he's done for every part of this state he's been a great senator he's produced for us.
I think he's irreplaceable in the Senate and I think we ought to keep him -- every ounce of energy we have he's real treasure in this state.
So what there why do you think that's sad -- has gained so much -- in the polls at one point there was a twenty point gap.
And now in most of the polls it appears that -- stack is legal.
Well it's margin of error I had among all Democrats Specter has -- fairly healthy lead but among likely voters it's it's pretty close last -- was one point.
Look I think you hit it right on -- head there's an anti incumbency feeling it's directed against Republican incumbents like senator Bennett.
Who I thought it did did a great job representing Utah.
It's been targeted -- Democrats and Republicans alike -- thirty year incumbent how would you like to be a thirty year incumbent running this year and that's the problem senator Specter's had.
-- governor it could also be anti Obama because the president.
Has come out -- and very much supported Arlen Specter in fact there were many accounts that he had tried to convince.
In a very strong way sex act to get out of the race and now we don't have President Obama shown up didn't show any support for -- Specter.
Well for first world number one remember -- and democratic primary this is a close primary.
And its President Obama is still very popular among Democrats that will finally become -- event.
Well number two is don't underestimate what he's done that TV commercial the last commercials Specter campaign.
Where the President Obama ends by saying I love Arlen Specter have a -- about thirty times today.
Throughout most parts of this -- -- President Obama has helped senator Specter tremendously why didn't come in the last couple days I don't know.
But it's all about as you guys now it's all of that.
-- -- -- Eighty so commercially made.
You can spin it either way there but why did Joe Biden not come he was the one who encourage Specter to become a Democrat.
-- Joe Biden did campaign -- about ten days ago in the northeast section in -- state where Joe was more and so he's waiting in there.
President Obama didn't robo calls for Arlen Specter he didn't direct mail -- our -- inspector.
So I think he's done a good job there isn't a Democrat going to the polls today that doesn't understand the President Obama wants Arlen Specter.
Right exactly all right -- Leo it's like you on the show governor Ed Rendell thinks it.
-- you guys have done a great day -- you.
