Pennsylvania governor Ed Rendell joining us now governor welcome to you.
We were just talking before you got here it and really I think I think the whole world wants to know what governor Rendell a Democrat from Pennsylvania thinks about.
A Democrat from Illinois I mean your initial thoughts.
In a sadness a sadness -- for government as a whole because when one person does what governor Blagojevich is alleged to have done and obviously with the tapes it's it's pretty damning.
It it reflects on every line government and weakens people's confidence in government period.
People say well if he did it everyone has they all do it.
And my experience and I've been in elective office for 31 years my experiences that 90% of the people who serve -- elective office.
Are decent and honorable women and men.
We're trying to do the best they can for the -- and almost all of them they give up money by serving in public.
Like the governor I think people are cynical for a reason you say well everybody thinks that this this one did this one did it because he got caught you don't my experience is is that.
Is that for for couples it -- one of the couples its feet.
Okay and -- and one of the couples catches them.
It's never the first time that couple that spouse never gets caught the first time that he -- you always get caught and the second third or fourth time.
Which if he got caught doing this it would it would it would lead me to believe this has been going on for a long time.
-- -- and -- governor Blagojevich has been under investigation.
I think -- move forward ran for reelection.
So that would -- acted to 0405.
So yeah no I've no doubt that this is just the tip of the iceberg.
When someone as a predilection to do.
It's stuff like this I think if you assume that this wasn't the all of a sudden -- -- wake up and say let's sell the senate seat because it's a great opportunity.
When you got phone calls and I know you did in the in the hours after this -- and I -- phone calls and governor good war.
What is going on Illinois what do you tell people how do you how do you how do you make sure the people in Pennsylvania.
I've been in the public -- for 31 years is a character thing governor is all about character I think it's -- -- character and it's about not letting.
The power of the office grabbed hold of you and consuming and -- Well I was asked to launch day -- it seemed -- in this politicians more than anything its first -- it's.
You read about politicians.
You read about politics is a lot more than you read about.
Is this people who do stuff like this that's number one -- our lives right out there.
Number two is because most politicians make the mistake.
With a staff who they sort of -- do agree with everything they say -- not say hey you know that's a bad idea.
And they don't -- mix -- -- with the public and when you're in -- isolated atmosphere.
You begin to rationalize UV and -- we'll look on the governor of the state.
I've delivered health care through every child in in my state so it's okay for me to bend the rules because the good -- good that I did.
It's okay for me to bend the rules so care workers come up to my house -- and shoveled snow because that way I can spend more time governing.
He rationalize and and when you have.
Power that's -- saluted.
Absolute power corrupts absolutely is no question it.
There's a question and only in America that's absolute power.
As governor without their support of the legislature -- can't get anything done sign my parents and -- but I try as hard as I can it two.
To have contact with people outside of my sphere.
So when I go to the Eagles cancers I sit in the stands I sit in this he's taken that I've had way before became governor.
As I -- except for the fans and wanna get the pulse of the fans.
If they think I'm doing something wrong I'll hear from them.
I wanna do that I walked the streets often rather than.
Be driven by the state police just was I wanna hear what people have to say it's after if you do damned if you got to work -- you've got to work hard.
I remember there was a horrible -- -- you I was there.
33 inches it was called the East Coast that was -- is -- century you remember.
And I really needed to get.
To work brokers or something man did today at studio that I had to -- So I call my chief of staff I said.
David -- can you get the -- -- streets guys to come.
I -- it's not a jab but can they shovel out my driveway.
So I can get down and -- And he said you know we we shouldn't do that -- tell me why because I surround myself with people.
We'll talk back but my rationale was Baghdad and do the work for the people.
So isn't it okay when -- three inches fell forward them to shovel my driveway so I can get them.
And that's the sad type of psychology did you get into -- and you've got to watch it watch it watch it.
And the whole thing -- -- -- microphone and here's what can have this you know what I talk about is -- and and my dad -- -- this long -- on -- -- of -- high school when.
And and jump -- if you want you on record high school when I was playing baseball and the first time I was up a hit a home run the second time -- I could pop fly to center field right.
And you don't.
Big -- of course I didn't run about the run up pop lab with two good runs pop fly out right so I'm Soledad down the first base.
And of course the center fielder -- there I am in the first debate the issue that's gonna turn that down to second base and my delegate -- mean I'm thinking in the senate -- on -- look at -- like.
When did you get so good and so my mind that you can't run out of liable.
And you know there's a parallel that I Jimmy Rollins who is the NL.
And most valuable player last year.
This year in September during the Phillies run two win at all he didn't run out a a ground ball and Charlie Manuel the manager sent him again.
Because he and -- Iran is a heck of a player and he -- 99% of the time he gives.
A 100% more but everyone's we all need to be reminded that you know where not to be.
All of them know we're not that's exactly what comes down to -- and I I would I don't know I don't know -- that -- -- -- my.
My opinion -- view is that -- if you were in -- room with with governor Blagojevich.
And you guys -- and high school -- this coming out.
-- -- but it is back soon be and they just beat the daylights out of me because it's it's one of those things it's just so -- if it's true and I mean again we have to emphasize is a lot of tape.
Going against him and these are all allegations but if it's true it's just.
The people itself -- this morning and there's no question.
And the people -- reelected him well some of these allegations that these were some allegations swirling around.
Because I guess they thought he had done some positive things for -- and -- and it's hard for -- People today you know you hear so much in the room I hear so much in the room well.
It -- you know.
Here people -- getting divorced.
Daily basis -- and then they've never been happier -- just.
The rumor mill swirls around so -- the ordinary citizen has a tough time deciding what's real and what's.
Especially in politics when your opponents are all too anxious to feed the rumors so they elected him basin of coming.
The -- you know the book on Rod Blagojevich of this is true is -- -- Tremendously -- but let me give an example Illinois became the first state in the union.
Guarantee that every child would have access to health care.
Pennsylvania is the second -- I know film -- was the first I'd be used to it.
Let's not jump -- -- I think the president let me some good points they're saying you know look we talk about about the corruption in the old political machine coming out of Chicago which you look at Chicago you know Illinois the state of Abraham Lincoln Paul Simon has some wonderful things and one of Dick Durbin has done some wonderful.
-- so they gruesome find Adlai Stevenson -- sea island junior senior Angie and that's exactly right so it really has an effect -- -- maybe you know the answers.
You know the Democrats don't want interim appointment because they want somebody who can build up credentials to run again.
Given all of the the the turmoil.
Maybe an interim appointment would be a good idea is -- nice things -- do you still alive.
I don't know that we can Google likely Google event analyst Susan -- -- I don't believe he would.
It's the young -- where he was such a fine individual web nice sort of interim appointment he would -- Someone like that.
It would almost be like in Pennsylvania if there was vacancy.
Putting Harris Wofford back in the senate a guy with incredible enough credibility and and -- grade level of integrity I guess.
