Well Democrats aren't the only ones split over tax cuts Republicans are Austin debating the best way to handle the tax cut battle.
On Capitol Hill joining us now -- Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.
-- Kentucky senator nice to see today.
-- to do it you.
Senator if congressman John Boehner is willing release opens the idea -- of compromise the wire deal.
Well let me do it ought to be gone we ought not to be racing cut taxes in the middle of -- recession.
The Democrats like to call these tax cuts -- if we're doing people -- favor.
This -- been a tax rate for a decade.
And so what they're contemplating doing right now is raising -- those.
On the top two rates which they say -- the wealthy well let me tell you who that it does.
It's a 50% of small business income 25% of the workforce.
And we've heard some are present on hillsides -- -- just 3% of small businesses.
You know how many that -- That's 750000.
Small businesses the biggest job generators in the country.
For their taxes go -- up in the middle -- -- recession.
We think that's a terrible idea we're gonna fight it.
Says senator McConnell there is no room to compromise or we understand you correctly.
What I'm saying is what ought to be done is that we ought to continue the current tax rates for all Americans.
The worst thing you could possibly do would be -- be raising taxes on anybody.
In the middle of what -- most most American site is a recession.
Since senator you and just be clear you're not willing to go to the drawing board and try to figure out a way to work with those across CIO to figure out a way to get tax cuts for -- portion of the American people.
What I'm telling you is that there's there at least five Democrats in the senate and a growing number of Democrats in the house.
Who agree with me.
That we ought not to be raising taxes on anybody.
In the middle over -- that's the Smart way to go if we want to have an economic recovery in this country.
But the perception is that it that's gonna -- a very big fight in the senate seems like everyone's gearing up for a big battle over these tax cuts -- senate Republicans better at fighting than they are legislating.
Well this is easily gone all you have to do is simply extend the current -- For all America just not a complicated legislative matter it's easy.
Just take the tax rate that is applied.
For the last ten years and make it permanent.
That's the single biggest signal we could we could -- to the private sector.
That we're not going to raise your taxes it's OK to start hiring again and deal -- this unemployment problem we're never gonna get out of this with more spending and more -- Senator McConnell how likely scenario though that this battle could continue there's no compromise and then all the tax cuts expire for all Americans.
You know we gonna have the debate now we're gonna have it again in the session after the alleged after the election which the so call lined up.
The touch -- the ball on everybody if -- at the end of the year.
I'm hoping that a bipartisan majority will come to -- very responsible conclusion.
The raising taxes on anybody in the middle over recession is a terrible idea.
Say he is so it's clear you don't wanna raise taxes -- -- for the wealthiest of Americans because that severely you say hit small businesses William then join with the president.
And join with Democrats who want to pass at thirty billion dollar small business bill through the senate.
Well the small business bill just passed the senate and unfortunately it's got a TARP provision and at that allows the government to come in and take equity positions in.
In small businesses you know we've we tried that two years ago.
Those got to bail out -- other group a bad idea so I ended up voting against should be good I don't think we need another bailout.
What we need to do is to reassure the private sector about not raising their taxes.
Not in it having any more onerous regulations on them.
That they're gonna be left alone so they can do their thing which is to our people and create jobs.
In our job starved economy -- -- we're we're sitting at a almost 10% unemployment rate.
After the Democrats who spent the last two years spending and borrowing and now they want -- tax on top of it.
The private sector is reacting very badly today and we need to quit doing that and head and a different direction and we want a good job growth again in this country.
Senator -- -- here at post the mid terms are talking a lot about that the idea that.
That the Republicans are going to be able to reclaim the house that's the Connelly Anderson perception at least going into -- mid terms what do you think happens to the senate.
Well you know the election were tomorrow -- be the leader of a larger group that I am now right now we only have 41 Republicans in this.
I think there's an overwhelming likelihood it will embrace our increase our number and -- I'll be the leader of a larger group and other got to be good for the country.
Are you prepared -- To be the leader of a larger group -- -- are you ready.
-- As those -- now senator thank you so much senator Mitch McConnell we appreciate you joining us today sir thank you thank you.
