At least part of it is over seven years -- in the beginning of the war in Iraq President Obama announcing the end of combat.
I am announcing that the American combat mission in Iraq has -- Operation Iraqi Freedom this over.
And the Iraqi People now have lead responsibility.
For the security of their country.
This is my pledge to the American people as a candidate for this office are combat mission is sending.
But our commitment to Iraq's future is not.
The transitional force of US troops will remain in Iraq with a different -- this afternoon I spoke to former president George W.
It's well known that -- and -- disagreed about the war from its -- -- no one can doubt President Bush's support for our troops.
Or his love of country and commitment to our security.
As I've said.
-- patriots who supported this war and patriots who opposed.
And all of us are united.
In appreciation for our servicemen and women.
And our hopes for iraqis' future.
Who joins us from South Carolina good evening senator and somewhere around why did.
President Obama give this speech.
Well -- this is a transition moment where combat operations in general -- a narrow.
The commander and now a rock indicated that we could withdraw that 50000.
Troops I guess the president is trying to let the American people know that.
You know combat operations are over and that's something that we've been hoping for for very long time.
I think it's a missed opportunity by the present quite frankly to lay the cards that on the table -- -- -- not only did he and the president have differences that President Bush made adjustments.
-- the success that we're having today and I really wish the President Obama would acknowledge that I think that would have been a classy thing to have done.
I think -- making a reference to the surge which incidentally even backing up from President Bush 43 supported is that.
Former -- and a former candidate for president and Senator John McCain was probably the first to raise it publicly that we should send more troops and then senator.
Barack Obama I was supposed to it.
Yellow if you look back up President Bush is gonna get some blame for allowing a lot to deteriorate he's gonna get credit.
For the surge in Senator McCain was the big push.
Of the search politically.
And going forward President Obama will get his fair share the credit if we're successful in Iraq.
And his -- get the lion's share of the blame if we fail in the one thing this speech didn't emphasize enough to me -- -- combat operations may have ended.
That Iraq is not over by any stretch of imagination ban -- form that government yet I'm very worried about it now -- the Obama administration.
Would pick up the pace to try to get the parties to reconcile with each other and come out with a new government without that -- the countries don't go back into chaos.
And I suppose -- president does -- yellow he tomorrow morning by the fact that he of course is the is this supporting.
The surge in Afghanistan and and -- the and and has.
Told the American people half fact of that -- -- should be and will be.
Even -- a post that he opposed the surge when he was a candidate in Iraq and he's -- hit at least for that inconsistency and -- saddened consisting and I I don't know.
Well -- well -- hope he's learned that what put president.
Bush and Senator McCain pushed.
And Iraq and he opposed work and I'm glad he's trying to do something similar in Afghanistan.
Give him credit for for suggesting and changing.
I -- about the space there is no there are some things at that I quite frankly I wonder if -- simply Politico.
At one point in speech he's talking about the timeline.
And he says and next July we will begin a transition to Afghan responsibility.
He goes out later to say but make no mistake this transition will begin.
Because open ended war serves neither our interests nor the -- people and of course that's very popular with with much of his base electing -- and and I -- to throw into the mix and he'd give you some sound.
What dead general Conway has said about the whole idea of talking about time once.
It's probably giving our enemy sustenance we think that he measures may be saying to himself -- in -- we've intercepted communications that say hey you know really have the whole upper solo.
So -- I've put into this speech that even if he intends to meet that timeline why once again make that sort of public announcement.
I think you probably put your thing on a there was a basic element in this speech he's reminding the democratic base.
Before the November election.
Promised -- in combat operations in Iraq and have delivered on this promise that's a big deal to the left.
The truth is -- this whole draw down what's negotiated by President Bush.
And he's trying to reinforce it to those who opposed to this war that come July we're gonna withdraw troops the only issue is how fast and how many.
In general Conway put his finger on the problem when you announce you're gonna withdraw troops next July.
The enemy doesn't hear an enduring commitment they hear the fact that you gonna leave and the only thing up.
For a debate exactly -- Sony's really made a mess -- in Afghanistan.
But putting this condition of withdrawal it may play well in the left of the Democratic Party but it's not going to play well in Afghanistan Pakistan or Iran.
What -- into human Louis B started to notice it started day mean of course was in the Oval Office which has been used against huge significance your food to us and to us Americans.
He talks about Iraq and this was to announce the end of the combat phase he then morphed into Afghanistan which entices -- image related it's warm -- -- war there.
But then he goes into an end and use that time I think I -- -- -- that it was Politico but Vinny goes into the economy on the war.
Is that -- -- necessary part of this discussion or is that Politico.
Well I think he's trying to let the American people -- about withdrawing troops from our rat we're gonna have one less financial obligation.
Give me credit for reducing financial burden on the country what he should have been talking about to me is that -- we've come a long way in Iraq.
We're close to transforming the mideast where.
Vastly safer -- -- -- becoming a democracy versus a dictatorship.
And having a democracy in the heart of the mideast in the Arab world it's a transformative event he recognized the sacrifice of the troops.
But he didn't put it in context that the ones who died in were injured have made us all safer and issued a transition to Afghanistan and say.
To the world at large our enemies and our friends I'm gonna have the same commitment of winning in Afghanistan the President Bush showed a winning.
An Iraq that's what I wanted him to say not reinforce that we're -- next July not talk about the economic benefit.
Withdrawing -- -- -- the talking about the fact that we took terrorism long -- the Iraqi People.
And we're on the verge of one.
Except the big.
Elephant in the room and now we elephant reference the Republican Party but the big elephant in the room is that -- is that what the reason at least I understood why we went in there was weapons of mass destruction.
That wasn't mentioned tonight of course that wasn't under this president's watch the whole issue of weapons of mass destruction should that -- it is there a way that -- There are I mean.
How do we handle that would the American people because that was the original reason.
Well here's what we need to tell the American people that the intelligence from all over the world with the Saddam Hussein was trying to develop weapons of mass destruction.
He had used weapons of mass destruction against his own -- He invaded his neighbors and he was up to no good he was -- suicide bombers.
Attack in Israel and the president should reminded the world and the American people that Saddam Hussein being replaced in the sacrifice.
That was necessary to replace him by the Iraqi people and the American people made it safer and al-Qaeda.
Got their nose -- big time in Iraq would Muslims aligning with us to take on al-Qaeda elements -- went to.
Undermine us and Iraq and the big story of Iraq is that al-Qaeda got beat -- Muslims with our help.
It -- -- course so there's the problem -- that -- Saddam Hussein.
Use the weapons of mass destruction against his own people in 1985 or 1989 that's a problem what.
And what and then it here here.
Okay can -- just say something yeah I was saying as he -- yet again yet and I -- -- I think is that is it started as regret as everybody got the intelligence wrong.
Everybody whether it's Tony Blair or Democrats or Republicans the problem is those that -- -- -- -- get it right.
-- here's here's the good news Saddam Hussein is -- it.
The Iraqi People have a chance to live in freedom.
To create a functioning democracy between Syria and Iran and al-Qaeda has been taken down by Muslims with our help.
Rockets and transformed it they've been in the war on terror the next five is an Afghanistan.
About when we leave in Afghanistan is about what will leave behind history would judge president Barack Obama not by the day we left Iraq.
About what we left behind the same is true and Afghanistan where -- war this go home go home for a very long time.
Iraq and Afghanistan are too big battles.
We're about to win in Iraq if we see this thing through and we should have American troops in Iraq after 2011.
It would be wise to have an American military presence in Iraq for a time to come to secure the gains we have struggled and sacrificed to achieve.
I think -- be in the state to leave Iraq totally without some American military presence for the foreseeable future.
Says he says.
