And the support.
Check disappointed that we weren't -- come to Washington and change the tone.
You know rise and rise about it bush pushed out of a job well except talk and in the book about.
Those last ten months as a became increasingly disillusioned.
That was former white house Press Secretary Scott McClellan on The Today Show this week talking about his new memoir what happen.
The book offers up critical comments about President Bush the Iraq War and the way the Katrina disaster was handled.
Jimmy kicked off his media tour this week it'll go on for a little while I guess he says.
I got I got caught up in the Washington game any points fingers at the media and the media are agreeing Katie Couric says.
I think he has a legitimate point.
I think it's one of the most embarrassing chapters in American journalism when you think.
Well look the media loves to Wear the hair shirt and say oh we were manipulated by those big mean Bush Administration people.
I seem to -- a firm out of criticism about the on the Iraq War and including from me frankly before it started and then nobody's -- the seeming depressed.
Had its chance to take a whack at the war.
And the voters in both 2002 and 2004.
Went the other way President Bush won the popular popular opinion poll.
Any and the war started began I think what McClellan is really gonna have a run bond is not criticizing the media.
It's criticizing President Bush that.
Katie Couric and Meredith Vieira and Matt Lauer all the rest of them are going to be eating up for a good long time.
So were the media complicit here well partially but look at -- Katie Couric should name names and all of those people who did not do the job they're being overpaid to do should do the honorable thing.
-- -- She -- opinion anecdotes she talks about was if you wish that they got and had a tough interview with an administration official.
And people called -- said you do that again we're gonna cut you off there was a lot of pressure after 9/11 and patriotism and what I think is really interesting is.
The -- you know.
Politics and -- thing that's going on McClellan being embraced by the left wing.
-- -- he has apologized for trashing Richard Clark for his but he's getting some of the treatment from his former friends that he helped give.
To the enemies of of this operation when they were doing it.
Well they -- he also talks one about the permanent campaign mentality that that the White House he says got caught up in I mean since when is a White House.
Not in sort of permanent campaign mentality.
He's very young guy -- to just forty years -- and I think in some ways what he's unfamiliar with with the ways of Washington and I you know he left.
I'm very difficult times it's I think there's lots of talk coming from in the White House that this is the guy with some bitterness about the way that he was treated.
And people say that they don't recognize this Scott McClellan.
You know in fact he was a very low key guy but I will say this.
The notion that somehow there was propaganda use this is hurt his term propaganda it's just surprising to me.
What administration doesn't -- what would not -- propaganda in terms of selling a war effort.
You know it's wrong headed on some levels if you come in there as Mr.
Smith Goes to Washington but on another level it's to -- And then Jane there is that the link that some bloggers have uncovered between the publisher -- the the put the book out and George Soros is that a viable.
I mean is is that meshing here.
They're out of the house passed the smell test.
It not for me I mean it does for people who are looking for dirt on on the publisher.
I mean it's a perfectly reputable house I think I think they're trying to find ways to go after and -- been some very interesting television work Karl Rove.
Was on O'Reilly talking about his -- on that first they said they were disappointed in and now they're trying to go after it on the publisher.
The fact is the best thing is you know look and see if these facts do match.
And what is he -- about -- -- got.
I think that's that's a key point and and just to pick up on that one of the flaws in the book among whatever other flaws there may be there is zero footnotes let's compare this to Douglas fights book who came out of the Pentagon one of the co architects of the Iraq War policy he has over a hundred.
Pages of footnotes there's not a single one in the McClellan a book.
We're tipped completely trust this fly on the wall and his memory of meetings some of which according to Dan Bartlett and Karl Rove he never even -- -- -- you know -- -- say stop attacking him stop attacking and check out the facts and when it comes back to the media.
I think there's a story to be -- obviously I think the media did let it slip let the American people down so many ways by being.
Penetrating and critical.
At a key moment at the Washington Post reported on Friday that the first draft to the book was -- you know like a very Press Secretary dull book.
And somehow it got souped up.
To become the bush bashing book that he's as an editor tweaked it right well over the -- -- -- yeah.
That's that's that's quite a story and I was up but I also agree with cal and that is that -- -- -- everybody ought to be analyzed in the history this book.
McClellan has a right to his story to tell it if it is at least it's true he was an eyewitness saw a lot of -- things as Peggy Noonan said by all means let's have everybody who was involved in the Bush Administration.
Write a book or at least do an oral history so that we can.
All judge the facts ourselves each one of us.
You know he was put out there I mean everything I've heard from people who know him is he felt a deep sense of betrayal that -- Slowly over being put out there to live by people who didn't telling the truth I think that's a serious charge and a serious question.
Here's what the White House here's what the White House had to say about his book Dana Perino the spokesman for woman who has the job he used -- said.
Scott we know is disgruntled about his experiences at the White House we are puzzled it is sad this is not the Scott.
We knew Jim you know a thing or two about how old white house press operations -- -- think they've handled.
I think they've got a very good job I mean -- is that they've really been on message that put every were.
President Bush on possible on the air blasting the quick look they even got Bob Dole -- come out of retirement -- -- as you know it to come out and really hammer the book hard and now means something to the -- Public -- -- about it that this is about.
Hammering him for not being loyal -- not about the facts tonight and that's what I think let's look at the facts and especially when it comes in the press in this country.
There's been a problem is a problem when people say you know -- -- patriot I don't question is how I'm going to war.
That's obviously the wrong message that's not the standards for the best.
