It's a one year anniversary today the 787.
Billion dollar stimulus bill.
That President Obama signed one year ago was intended to help reverse job loss but hasn't really helped.
Joining us from Richmond Virginia the chair of the Democratic National Committee governor Tim -- good morning to governor.
Hey Gretchen good to be back.
Thanks so much for joining us all right so we look at the unemployment numbers -- one year ago today it was seven point 7%.
Now it was -- -- over 10% back down to nine point 7% something like scratching their heads saying that while billions of bucks.
But we don't have any more jobs.
Well Gretchen -- tackle it on two fronts first a year ago today as you know the economy in the last month of the Bush Administration.
Was losing 722000.
Jobs a month that's what we were shedding -- -- have gotten that loss figure down to about net zero.
I'm the second we were going through a protracted period of GDP slumping -- a annual rate of about 6%.
Now GDP is grown for two quarters in a row -- about a 6% positive.
I'm so we've seen a dramatic turnaround in this economy in the last year and even economists like mark sandy for example who was an adviser to senator McCain's presidential campaign says the recession is ending largely because the stimulus.
Is taking effect yeah we wanna be yet but it's great that we were able list that we were able to stop the free following jobs we had to do that -- -- least we will and act to do it.
But look we've got to do more we've got to make more investments like the nuclear energy investment that the president talked about yesterday and as we do that we're gonna see the job picture continue to improve.
But here's the problem governor you have to have a math major to understand this whole concept of -- jobs created jobs even the number that you just gave.
That you say that there -- -- it's a zero rate of losing jobs for -- Joe Biden has an editorial this morning saying that it's at 35000 jobs.
So here's the problem nobody can figure out the numbers and that leads people to believe.
That the numbers are being fudged a recent poll shows that only 6%.
Of Americans believe that jobs are being created from the stimulus plan.
What will Gretchen I had the -- is the -- look we were -- and 720000.
A year ago at the end of the bush administration and folks we're not willing even to pull the record on the -- -- with an economy in free fall.
This president and congress acted with dispatch to do tax cuts for working families every family under 250000 dollars got a tax cut and continues to get one.
To invest money in Medicaid and unemployment for hard hit folks.
And to put money into infrastructure projects as a former governor you -- I what -- I had to write a budget before the stimulus passed.
And then I got to rewrite it after a pass and I can tell you it's not a theoretical matter at all.
Thousands and thousands of state local employees jobs were on the chopping block -- likely -- -- their jobs had not passed.
And what you see just just -- -- credits.
The folks in congress or governor she stood up and voted against the stimulus who said it was a bad idea and it is in creating jobs.
They're lining -- to get the stimulus dollars there are holding up oversize checks and getting there.
Pictures taken it at that ground breaking news and ribbon cuttings.
-- and they are some of really the best advocates for this because they're acknowledging that it's working.
-- at every turn the corner a little bit with you governor because you've come under fire recently for your job as chair.
Of the DNC with the elections in Virginia the election in New Jersey the election in Massachusetts and now Evan Bayh a moderate in Indiana saying.
Bye bye to being a US senator.
How are you taking these attacks specifically from a former governor of your own state Douglas wilder.
Who said this quote don't let yourself believe that Massachusetts and Virginia and New Jersey where some aberration.
Is that -- this president wants to be arm in arm with as we enter a pivotal election year he's talking about you governor.
We'll Gretchen listen if you're -- job as a leader you're gonna have critics and I've been in elected office and our.
Public servers for seventeen years and I don't like critics worry me over overly much and I don't panic look.
At the Democratic Party.
They -- in in the first part we had five special elections in congress and we won all five we picked up two US senators.
We worked historic amounts of monies raised built a field network that I think is second to none in the non presidential year.
And yes beginning in November there have been three elections that haven't gone our way.
But what I know about this president and I definitely know about it myself.
You don't panic if a couple of things don't go your way that's not what leaders do.
-- we are working hard in the policy front to turn around an economy that was in freefall when the other guys were running at.
We've won more than our share of elections since inauguration day are we gonna have a tough climate going into the mid term sure we will.
Every president has since 1900 the average president and first mid terms.
Lose 28 house seats for senate seats and governor's race and -- outlet and an average times it's tough times.
But when it when times get tough I'll tell you this.
This president doesn't just panic and start -- folks over the side we don't panic either we've got a plan we're getting the economy turned around.
We're improving America's status in the world we're gonna keep -- it.
All right let's take a listen to what the RNC chair Michael Steele had to say back to the stimulus topic we had him on earlier this show on FOX & Friends.
-- it's so much joy out.
That is celebrated all right let me people argument you're getting jobs done and and business is a growing.
That has been the fiction here the other fiction we need to it to just dispense with is this saved and created nonsense I don't know what that is I don't know what that looks like if I can't put my finger is on a -- can't touch it and if I can't get up at 6 o'clock in the morning and go to work there.
Then it's not happening and that's the reality of a lot of people right now.
And it'll back to that -- -- governor where so many people just do not believe that the stimulus has created jobs or that it will in the future.
I don't know of a tougher job than the one that you have right now based on what's happened in these last couple of elections governor you say you have a plan.
What are you gonna do to turn the tide in America so that Democrats that you want to win elections are gonna -- Well look it is going to be challenging cycle but Gretchen I'm not walking around with a long face with 59 democratic senators.
With a significant majority in the house with a majority of the governor -- in democratic hands.
And with the White House being in the hands of a great president who's doing a great job in the toughest circumstances since anybody came into office since FDR.
It is tough times.
I was a governor in tough times -- I was governor of Virginia during the toughest economy since the 1930s but.
We had a low unemployment rate we were the best managed state in America we were the best state for business.
Best state for a child be race.
-- used to dealing with tough situations.
So the job at the party might be a tough one but it's an honor every day to get up and work with this precedent.
Here's what I would suggest Michael Steele do if he doesn't see the stimulus working.
He should talk to -- -- members of congress Republican senators in congress members.
And Republican governors who worked odd ones out of one side of their mouth criticizing the stimulus but on the other side getting in line to get every last dollar they can.
And showing up at ribbon cuttings and handing out the oversize checks.
And they know that it is affecting their economies positively and that's why they're doing it.
That's -- Michael Steele should -- it -- right governor Tim Kaine to chair of the DNC fair and balanced both Michael Steele and Tim Kaine joined us today thank you governor.
Backstretch and you that he's good guest the last guy who had a job but refused come on the shelf didn't come on the channel besides yourself I think -- and -- --
