I'm now having to switch gears completely different way -- and talk more about survival in these times in these tough economic times this is a very.
Uncertain future that's uncertain future for a lot of folks right now many people who may be laid -- -- who wanted to reinvent themselves because.
Their jobs may be downsized that type of thing.
And my next guest has some advice and -- them.
Insights as to what you can do to make it different so that you -- not blind sided.
By a change in fortunes or reversal of fortune -- here to talk more about this is name's Lamar Smith and -- -- in the public mortal life that the the corner office and -- a great -- -- the secret to total life prosperity.
I find it very interesting that you really believe that.
There's a wait I mean we always hear people saying -- make the best out of that situation one.
But what is it about door.
Insight your particular method that really going to that you apart and give people some practical advice to move forward lives.
It's all about the inner voice that's what goes on between carriers and in our hearts.
That's where the battle about life relatives won or lost before it's fought.
And even when bad things happen even when you get laid off -- you're disadvantaged.
Your response to it is probably more important than what happens in your life.
And you can always choose your -- You can always keep your father what people don't know that a lot of them don't know that they have that choice.
That is a choice that you could choose how to respond how to react to the prices at the moment.
So how do you get people to focus and think about what that -- voice is telling them.
Well first of all if you're using words like he or she or then and then you're given away your power.
The things that are coming down the -- that other people are doing just messing up your life.
-- you've got to focus outward and you've got very little chance to change other people.
So it's much more productive to focus what what can I do even given that circumstance.
I have choices -- -- -- -- and you only have to live in the moment.
You don't have to worry about the past you don't have to worry about the future just have have to -- there's always something you can do figure out what that is and do it today.
You say -- be honest with yourself about what you might have to survive including taking your job or jobs that are well below your qualifications.
Take -- job just to get through this so.
Don't see it as a long term proposition this is something just to.
Keep the cash flow there is honor in any work done well.
And so there is no dishonorable work so long as your serving other people and you're you're doing a good job.
But -- -- have a hard time you know accepting that people who have been bankers investment counselors people who have had.
Six figure incomes now you know having to think.
About standing in line.
-- number of applicants for the what few jobs it might be available in particular field it's certainly.
But and that's a matter of choice.
-- -- exactly why did you write this book why did you what got you to.
-- focused and really engage in this discussion well I'm an older forced.
Pilot and -- started in the early years of my life.
Taking a look at the processes I was using to do the maneuvers because overcame an instructor pilot.
And I was teaching students how to do it and I could do the maneuvers and and the procedures but I have not really look my own up processes for doing.
So I started looking at those processes -- I was -- so that I could impart them and teach them to do this thing to do that.
And I carried that over to the rest of my life and I started analyzing those processes so that -- spent thirty years in the corporate environment analyzing processes that work.
And particularly those that didn't.
And when -- left the corporate office today sixty have time to do something else.
I said well I don't want about what my music in me how to -- a pass this on.
So you take a look -- -- solid you've accumulated over the last three decades and basically and -- Your life as a pilot and operated in this book and how do you know of that is it's -- obvious his work for you.
But how do you know that people are gonna come away feeling that they can do it to you that they can do -- and how what is it that you're trying to communicate with them -- to bridge that gap.
Well that the principles -- not all that terribly exotic.
But the way that but the way that they are deployed in the life.
This is terrible it's -- story.
A young man who is really sold out to record gets on an airplane.
He's seated next to a passenger that is an older man he that he discounted it and realized that he's a CO world -- -- -- largest firm yet.
So a lot of the conversation.
Takes place between the two of them in such a way that the government starts to -- the younger mamet borrower relationship.
And if it makes it pretty easy read an intimate that -- lessons.
Come pretty easily.
But -- This is the haves and -- there aren't emails -- -- -- email someone get to that in just a second okay.
When -- -- live in the moment don't focus on what you have to manage in ninety days one year from now focus on what positive steps you can make today.
That's typical for example -- -- having to you know be the main -- -- -- for example and certainly you have to -- an ability that kind of mortgage so.
How do you live in the moment given those obligations.
Well again you don't have to worry about the next ten years and what this you you just have to get through today if you are out of work and the bills are mounting up.
Then you've got to look at what you can do.
And do that today.
There is always one more thing you can do Hal -- general in the army taught us that in the movie that Mel Gibson -- we were soldiers once.
There's always one more thing you can do even in the midst of combat when things are not going your -- find what that is and do it.
Instead of having it vapor lock you -- with fear.
-- a matter of fact that is the that that's what's going on in America today and it's kind of interest thing I wrote this book last spring and summer before the financial crisis.
And I think it's taken on a little bit of -- different character now.
What I'm hearing is that.
Whole Lotta people are concerned about America and the future of the Americans right.
And the the the processes -- this book and and the message here I think really fits this time people are -- algae.
America really means a lot and now it's very much in question -- -- well together our children on the American dream.
Absolutely it is today's culture and today's times absolutely it is but the American people need to step forward we -- -- -- nation all of the people by the people of for the people.
And it's not for the government.
Or the schools or somebody -- for us as individuals.
Take individual or personal responsibility exactly -- and they're probably.
They're probably about 40% less or something like that it really understand the American -- and and are willing to do something about it.
Too many people think that America the free means free ride it doesn't it means freedom for individual.
The individual and then responsibility.
Is the other side of that point.
How did that when you know there's generations of young people today for example growing up without that notion of individual -- responsibility that they've seen their parents and grandparents being able to.
Manage the government handout.
Well that's what my generation is.
That is teaching young people -- well I think we should news everybody about this book.
-- Model mentoring relationship.
Recession fears and -- This -- Right individual freedom and responsibility.
At the working.
Out and money.
Things that are pretty.
-- -- Especially.
In the situation where.
-- facing tough times here.
Partner somebody who might.
As well when -- realize it.
You know what I'm noticing him as -- go through life isn't there more and more people.
Then when I go to a doctor -- less concerned lose spent his competence.
Or her competency.
The the idea is that -- we need to learn from each other over the expertise -- And and -- in my -- hope obstacles.
There -- there Leo.
For -- now with.
But most are them -- Hear it here.
You you have.
This -- picture in your mind of how life is going to be and all of a sudden that picture changes and it's forced upon first of all you resist change so you.
Or are you going to us that there inside -- and I hate this and and resisted and be upset.
Are you gonna site I've been handed an opportunity -- it's not one that I chose.
But I'm gonna make the best I'm going to take this.
This this basket of lemons and I'm gonna make -- limit.
And that's -- no cliche but it's true.
Many times and you can read the success stories that are out there many times.
People wind up doing their -- -- Not by choice but by circumstance that forced them to my -- so again it's not so very much what happens to us it's our response to it.
When you take a look at some of the folks that you've been interacting with you feel that message is resonating with the people aren't getting it now because of the fact that you have -- a year ago when you wrote this.
Perhaps it wouldn't have -- just as easily perhaps as it -- today in the fact that so many people are in the same boat.
Well some people have more time to read now.
Fifth which -- which is you know a little bit -- and shake but it's also.
That if all of a sudden you're out of work.
Great time to work on your physical well being -- -- exercises to great stress reliever right time to work on other aspects of your -- volunteer actually.
It's a great way to network.
Didn't -- and I'm out there and to -- people so don't just.
Should point because -- -- -- not think about that they can get to that job fairs or specific gatherings in order -- network but.
Volunteering and different -- -- in different cities for different in different you went for the homeless -- whether it's for different charities you can really you can -- some fascinating people that way.
It's happened many times and figure out what you have to sell your skill sets.
Your abilities and and think about repackaging -- much stick with the same industry that can be very beneficial to to go elsewhere.
But a lot of ability to think -- -- that they start out with is the one that they have to stick with them and people are realized you know don't often realize because they're caught up in the moment of work.
Stated today that they they feel at their dream they had dreamed -- was put on hold you know until they can get to until they retire.
But you're saying that that that's not that's not happening -- people are able to really tackle their dreams.
Today if they're willing to make that choice.
That's right if you if you become the pilot.
-- that aviation background so many people fly in the back of the airplane of their lives letting other people call the shots break terms -- -- -- don't -- Climb up in the cockpit and put your hands on the controls and take responsibility for what's happening to you how much -- faith -- part of this as spiritual -- does that have a lot to do with that success -- well.
Did with me a very wise friend asked me -- -- said.
You flew in Vietnam and -- -- -- -- scared I've said many times very scared.
Is that if you -- known here 2030 years later you would be sitting here -- would it have made the difference.
And I said all the difference in the world if -- -- known that we can live this life knowing.
That the next one is secure.
And and I and I I didn't find those answers until age forty.
So I would encourage anyone to be serious about asking themselves the big questions of life and then go about and systematic way looking at the facts and faith.
I have faith is not what someone -- -- it was described -- deciding to believe something -- pretty -- was not true.
Faith is while reasonable basis.
-- believing something it's true.
And there there's there's reasonable basis out there.
And saying is it's hard.
No if you're going in the right direction you're really making that choice you know to -- that -- -- -- -- from your comfort zone yes so I guess what advice would you give.
Well first of all the three.
-- sixty degrees on the compass and -- me direction.
You is that you don't have to get the one out of 360 you -- have to take the perfect first step you just have to get moving.
Didn't the -- learn that lesson of Vietnam we would fly into an area to pick up a pilot that have been shot down and the bad guys would be shooting -- you know tough tough circumstances.
And my mentors said.
This committee don't just sit there and run around and they shot -- start doing -- to start moving in the direction you may move in the wrong direction first.
And you may have to do 180 and your plan but at least you're moving.
So -- don't that first up is very tough.
But go ahead and pick out what is based on the information that you have make a decision is what the best the best option you have and take that step and get moving.
Investing in yourself that -- take some time and take some research.
Any advice and -- -- -- in terms of how best to go about researching what's out there yes we are each.
The best designed for something where we do our best in life is when we are aligning.
Our choices with our design we're doing what comes naturally successful people get up early in the morning I don't know whether it's -- cause and effect.
I believe that it -- -- effect that it when the eyes pop open there but can't whenever I get it today but yes they're doing what they love right.
If if your attitude is she had just got four more years and then I can retire and then I'll have it -- you probably not in the right spot.
And it takes some courage to break out but there are batteries of tests and preference.
Instruments that you can -- to really get in touch with how are your wired and the main thing is does it opens up your thinking so long.
That information is not very expensive to acquire and that's -- -- But a Community Colleges today -- -- they're filling up like crazy because people are.
Learning new skills and learning new ideas by virtue signing up for courses that they never thought -- that they perform.
The children exposed to before and that's where he hasn't.
It is a great resource and also.
In these times.
When people are laid off is that attack on the self image.
Anything that you can do to improve yourself image.
Is going to be beneficial and other aspects of your life as well but don't cut yourself off from everybody means to -- -- the community is very important in times like this exceedingly don't don't you know don't.
Feel like you're alone and that front in that regard and and it.
Journal he's not a bad idea even people would've never journal before.
Right back on how you're feeling realize that things are big part of life and is fearful and you're optimistic and you you're not sure how you're feeling we'll analyze that and write it down and and and and you'll be able to share that experience with someone else -- -- you do right now -- now.
Yes yeah yeah definitely been helpful yes.
You know I don't know it perfectly yet and but.
Let's come on working out when I when I do the maneuvers I get the benefit and one out now about.
You're in your strategy is this a -- total like for thirty do you have what.
Goals time limit if you can -- -- yourself say like you say that within six months on the back and sent back in the game again and.
And he'll do that and certainly can set family and really achieve that you can set that as a target and and it is better you know if you if you don't know where you're going in the road.
Any little get through there so it's better to plan with specificity.
So I'm I'm -- real proponent of that.
Does that make it happen by itself it leads you to the actions which might happen.
Okay wonderful that's terrific thank you so much -- so great to have you here and the book is called.
There's more to life and then at the corner office and that I think is a great read and you have some very good advice for people who have really.
Out there struggling you know with license certain -- today and I think it's it's a wonderful resource for people to turn to you because.
We really need.
These kinds of resources to help people were still America still land of the -- and we still have endorses any.
He's still believes in the American dream with absolutely wonderful I think that's important a whole lot in these times exceedingly.
People believe that the American dream so often many people limits -- Can't have it it's gone with directory climate to reclaim the strike thinking so much as you -- -- pleasure thank you very much about you could just give your life.
