So President Obama did make a deal apparently with congressional Republicans to extend the bush tax cuts for everyone for two years.
But not getting everything that he want.
I've no doubt that everyone won't find something in this compromise that they don't like.
In fact there are things in here that I don't like namely the extension.
The tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans and the wealthiest estates.
Joining me now from Missouri.
Democratic senator Claire self.
Actually you're in Washington right that you represent the state of miss -- -- you are always in Missouri in my heart of cars side I understand that senator thanks so much for being here.
-- right so obviously the deal looks like it's gonna go through.
A couple days ago you had some interesting comments about how you felt about the president making a compromise.
Do we have -- -- -- listen to us.
And if they think it's okay.
To raise taxes.
For the embattled middle class.
Because they're gone up pan out.
If we don't give more money to millionaires.
There really is time for the people of America take up -- Pitchforks.
Holy cow what do you mean by that well that's a that's a thing we have in Missouri it's like.
Cut not hog.
It's a -- -- obviously I don't mean for anyone to literally take up pitch -- I'm just expressing the frustration.
That I think a lot of Americans feel about a deficit busting.
Tax bonus for -- people on their second million dollars of income.
And -- third million dollars of income.
That's what I was expressing and that remains I mean this is a compromise.
If there's a lot of things in here -- I think many of us do not -- But I'm also impressed the -- that the president got many parts of the stimulus extended.
In this deal.
The -- that the parts of the stimulus that gives tax breaks were focused on the middle class and working people.
We have there's a new report out today it's of the stimulus created zero jobs I'm not so sure that that's a that's -- totals -- -- on but it.
What I'm just I'm just reciting at fort out of Santa outfit didn't say that what it said was that.
There were jobs created in Missouri alone we saved the state governments from cutting four billion dollars.
Out of -- 22 billion dollar budget teachers would have been laid off all over Missouri if it hadn't been for the stimulus.
What do you make though of the people in this I guess it's the far left to will be upset with the president for making this compromise.
With Republicans and I consider you -- -- so many people do a moderate Democrats so I guess have to say I was surprised at your tough language.
About the tax cuts because -- you are moderate so are you happy with the plan that we now have.
Of course not of course I'm not happy with it but that's what compromises our.
And I've got to take a look at all the details I'm I'm pleased that we're getting the extension of unemployment -- obviously pleased.
About the tax cuts that will continue for working people and for families that are included in here.
And I'm pleased about those things.
But you know here's the thing I'm really -- that press conference in those comments if you -- and in context I was talking about the deficit.
I was talking about how serious is the Republican Party about the deficit when they want to give a bonus for people -- million dollars in income.
At a time that we are borrowing money from China to pay for it.
Right well I think the taxes were for people and couples making over 250000.
Dollars years I'm not quite sure they were all.
Millionaires but I -- -- let him -- I -- thugs on Wiki leaks because you if you make comments about that as well it's a big day today because Julian -- is now going to be in a London court.
Facing ironically sex crime charges and nothing to do.
What you think should happen hearing on in the past you said the US should go after -- with the force of the law.
-- Obama administration done enough in your mind and will they do anything.
I think they're working on it I think there is.
You know you don't do criminal investigations and prosecutions.
On cable news what you -- you build a case are you look at the law and I can assure you there are many many people involved right now in finding accountability.
This is a big problem and there's a big difference between Robert Gibbs saying we should not be afraid as a country.
And we should not take this seriously enough I don't think -- well what.
You know did we stand on the rubble at 9/11 and say we should be afraid of course not our country doesn't back down.
We are not afraid but.
We are taking it very seriously and I know that the White House is to.
You would back Robert Gibbs statement on this show last week saying that America should not be -- -- don't you think that's a slightly different message.
Then what you yourself for actually saying that we should prosecute they should face the force of the law these -- makers.
The way I I think I think people who break the law and who do what this man dead.
And the people who helped him do it should be held accountable -- the -- we should put him away where the sun doesn't shine.
That doesn't mean Americans should be afraid and I think that's the sentiment.
That gives was trying to tell America we should never be afraid we are strong we are the best there's no reason for fear -- CS the Department of Justice follows up with any kind of charges I wanna get to something that's near and dear to your heart this is very important.
For all Americans and this is the Arlington cemetery bill that was passed tell us about that.
-- my committee on contacting oversight has done an extensive investigation.
In to be heart breaking -- confidence in Arlington and in this identification of burial grounds this is a sacred place for our country.
Are we were able to pass a lot over the weekend that will provide the kind of oversight and accountability that we have to have.
At Arlington national cemetery so those thousands of families that have -- the ones there can go there with peace of mind.
Right and that is so important not thank you very much for spearheading that I know so many people on your sites.
For that a senator Claire McCaskill always great to discuss with you LD issues to take thanks very much Merry Christmas Merry Christmas you to state.
