And this is a Fox News alert you -- looking live at the White House where right now the president and vice president are again meeting with my house speaker John Boehner and senate majority leader Harry Reid.
In an attempt to reach -- budget agreement and prevent a government shut down now as you can see.
We -- just over 24 hours from a potential shutdown which would affect nearly 800000.
Now this is Boehner and -- second trip to the White House today.
And they failed to reach an agreement at -- meeting earlier this morning and meanwhile the house today passed a temporary spending bill introduced by GOP leaders.
That would keep the government running for an additional week fund the military for the rest of the year and cut twelve billion dollars from the budget.
But this bill seems unlikely to save the day the senate while -- refusing to take it up and President Obama has already threatened to veto this.
And joining me now with reaction to all of this is Indiana congressman Mike Pence congressman good to see it thanks for being here.
Thank you Sean.
Well you know I guess -- go back to I'm beginning to wonder if this is what the White House wants.
They don't pass the bill October 1 last year that impasse -- November let it pass it in December had.
Bill HR one was -- what 45 days ago.
They didn't know they haven't taken it up in the senate I'm beginning to -- do you think this is their desire to shut down the government but the government because they think there's a political -- You don't you know hot I don't know but but but let -- you know let me be clear if if liberals in the senate.
And -- this administration.
Wanna force a government shutdown and instead of -- excepting 2%.
In cuts in this years budget than you know I say shut it down I mean.
You know you've been saying over the last month I've been saying it's time to pick a fight I'm here to tell you it.
As speaker John Boehner -- house Republicans are picking a fight in the negotiations are going on right now.
Speaker John -- drive and a hard bargain Americans -- -- concerned with a runaway federal spending by both political parties in recent years.
Oughta be proud of this speaker and ought to be standard with house Republicans come what may in the next one if.
-- our -- so the question is at an all lot of conservatives.
Are very very concerned about this.
They wanna make sure that John Boehner because what we're really it's this it's spitting in in -- notion or throw a pebble in an ocean.
61 billion -- a three point six trillion dollar budget with a one point 65 trillion dollar deficits nothing so the question is.
It -- would you support any compromise off the 61 billion dollar mark.
Well I yeah I.
I think HR one was a compromise Sean I -- we.
We we made a pledge of the American people that we would lower spending levels.
-- back to pre stimulus pre bailout levels and our pledge to America the American people overwhelmingly voted.
Four Republican majority in congress I think it's important that we keep our word.
And that's precisely what Republicans are done again.
And in fighting to do as we speak -- 61 billion dollars against the one point 65 trillion dollar deficit.
Is nothing more then a down payment -- might just be earnest money on restoring fiscal discipline in Washington DC and I know Republicans are determined.
To make that fight -- in that fight as I said speaker John -- drive a hard bargain and and I think taxpayers are gonna be the winners when it's over.
What is the argument why not 61 billion when the country's fortunes turned however and I'm trying to understand their side explain to me because they'd mail me if he -- because I don't understand it.
Well I admit it gets back down -- what you're speculating about at the top of this.
At the top of this segment is is.
-- it looks like that Democrats are willing to shut down the government.
To prevent passage of a 2% cut in the federal -- and they let it looks like Democrats are prepared to shut down the government.
So they can continue to borrow money from China to live to underwrite abortion providers in this country I I don't know what the motivations are.
But the I think the American people are recognizing more and more as time goes on but nobody.
In the Republican majority.
In congress wants to shut down the government what we're not.
Going to lose this moment where we can make a down payment.
On restoring fiscal sanity to Washington DC I think they may think it's 1995 all over again and I think they are not reading -- the American people well.
Look I I know a lot of people are afraid people they get their Social Security checks.
People are concerned about the military people are concerned about various very specific programs.
That people are dependent on so what does a gunman shut down for for all practical terms meet.
Well look it it it's not going to be pretty but it's not gonna affect Social Security benefits.
And if the president if the liberals in the senate and the president signed the bill that we passed announced today it won't affect our troops at all.
You know I -- the troops come first and so today.
Republicans brought to the floor of the congress a bill to fully funds.
The Department of Defense through the end of this fiscal year we embraced a couple more.
A budget cuts -- over to the senate and the cat immediately was dismissed by Harry Reid in the President Abbas I and I am still trying to absorb this John.
The commander in chief of armed forces of the United States threatened to veto a bill that would fund our troops during a time of war.
I just think that's unconscionable.
But what we can take care of our troops we can take care of our seniors it's gonna work inning convenience and hardship on hundreds of thousands of federal employees.
And the administration programs but but this fight is that important.
And and you know I've said many times.
You know sometimes things don't change in Washington DC unless they have to yeah I think the fight that's going on right now.
Even though if we get it if we get the whole 61 billion.
If we defund obamacare defund Planned Parenthood is just going to be a down payment on change in the direction of the national government it's going to be important.
Early victory that will set the stage for victories on the debt ceiling victories on the on passing the Paul Ryan budget.
And end and victories as we attempt to really change the fiscal destiny of this country if the Republicans did not.
