And hello again today from the campaign trail in Columbus Ohio joining us now to talk about the state of the race with a little more than two weeks ago.
Is Senator John McCain a senator welcome back to Fox News Sunday.
Let's start with where this race stands now sixteen days before the election according to the latest real clear politics average of national polls you -- Obama.
By seven points fifty to 43.
And take a law at the latest electoral map from Karl -- based on public state polls.
He has Obama leading in states with 313.
Electoral votes 43 more.
Then he needs to win the presidency usually in states with 171.
-- two and a world of trouble.
First polls this morning reliable zogby rescues and get Gallup.
All of us show us in the margin of error or someone behind -- -- behind sure.
I'm the underdog and I've always I've been the underdog and -- number of racism.
We're very happy with the way campaigns going I'm very happy with the debate went.
There the other night and look I've been on enough campaigns my friend to sense enthusiasm and momentum and we've got it and I guess I don't have to look at polls but the polling numbers -- close dramatically in the last few days.
We're going to be in a tight race we're going to be up late on election night that's just.
I'm confident that I've been into many campaigns my friend not to fit not to -- things are headed our way it can be tough shortstop.
So Obama raised a 150 million dollars in understand during the month of September completely breaking.
What ever idea we had after Watergate.
To keep the costs and spending on campaigns under control first time first time since the Watergate scandal.
I can tell you this.
That is unleashed now presidential campaigns new flood of spending that would then cause a scandal.
And then we will fix it again but Senator Obama has broken and he broke his word to me and the American people.
When he signed the piece of paper.
When he was a long shot can.
That he would take public financing if I would be signed peace paper than twice on national television he looked into the camera.
With Senator Clinton sit and answer I'll sit down and talk to John McCain before I make a decision on public financing.
He didn't tell the truth.
And finally there's 200 million dollars of those campaign contributions.
There's no record and not report you can report on line now 200 million dollars.
That that we don't know where the money came from a lot of strange things going on in this campaign the American people should know where every penny came from nowhere every penny in my campaign country.
Let me ask you about the money because.
Here as you alluded to and I was going to ask you about it Obama today announced that he raised a 115.
Million dollars in September by way of comparison.
In accepting public financing you're getting 84 million for the entire campaign.
He's outspending you on advertising 41 in the key state of Virginia for instance he has three times as many field offices.
Is he buying this election.
Well I think you could make that argument but we're not going to let them.
We're not going to let that happen.
But what I worry about its future elections to not only mine that were cut for the most about mine at the moment what's going to happen the next time around for years from what's going to happen particularly if you got an incumbent president.
And we no longer stick to the finance and the public financing which was a result of the -- -- and so what's going to happen the damage broken we're now going to see huge amounts of money coming into political campaigns and we know history tells us.
That always leads to stand.
But senator you said in the last debate you've mentioned it again here today you compared it to to Richard Nixon's spending in Watergate.
As best it as -- second that this is the greatest amount of spending in a presidential campaign since Nixon and Watergate as best I can tell he's not doing anything illegal and another thing you're talking about witches.
200 dollar contributions he's not listening on his website he doesn't have.
No he doesn't have you but here's a campaign that pledge full disclosure change of direction and all of those things.
And we technology allows us -- -- we don't have any trouble recording but you suggesting an advertising yet illegal or improper I don't know I'm saying.
That history shows us.
Where unlimited amounts of money aren't political campaign to leads to scandal I'm not comparing it with.
I'm saying this is the first since the Watergate scandal.
That any candidate for president United States and major party candidate has broken the pledge to take public financing.
We enacted those reforms because of that scandal we know.
That we have unlimited amounts of money in this case 200 million dollars -- reported.
And there's already been.
Stories of people who have made small contributions multiple times and all I'm saying it's -- a predicate for the future.
It can be very dangerous history has shown that.
But you're behind in the polls you great human being badly outspent.
How'd -- turn it around in the final two weeks Fletcher closing argument.
I started turnaround the other night.
Win we challenge senator Obama's words he is the most eloquent.
Person I've ever written in politics but he said he would.
-- on offshore drilling he would quote consider.
When he made several other statements that were.
What you've got to nail it down payment yeah.
We have to I'm very pleased what happened date because it helped define the issues.
With the American people and kill the plumber of course you know plumbers average citizen.
And show the -- now speaking for millions of small business people all over America and they are becoming aware.
That's spreading we need to spread the wealth around.
It's not let small business people one and before we go into this business of well they wouldn't be taxed it sector.
Of small business income would be taxed under senator Obama's plan.
That's sixteen million small business jobs in America and that's what killed the plumbers figured out and finally could I just say.
Where are we in America.
Where candidates for president comes to a person -- way he asked some question gotten like the answer and all of a sudden he's savaged by.
By the candidates.
People means establish why am I mean here's a guy is a private citizen what what's that all valuables.
Senator I mean I was aiming to get ended up at a -- if you brought up -- the -- 21 times in the debate.
This -- that it isn't the candidate I don't know that Obama has savage image really has been on the I have looked into of course is -- -- -- plumbers a drummer -- -- of -- senator Joe Biden attacked in the next day.
Well he just said give me a break and Plummer makes you don't know he attacked them the next day room we could you could probably run the clips you could probably -- -- North American citizens pocket be able today to ask the president it candidate in their driveway.
And not have their whole life and that and everything immediately going to die anyway I want to ask you about how has -- that he was attacked by Joe Biden he he was criticized by Senator Obama.
And the media have attacked that's just what's happened in your radio address yesterday you raise the S -- Socialism.
That you did it indirectly so let me ask you -- some straight -- Do you think that Senator Obama is the socialist do you think that his plans are socialism.
I think his plans there are redistribution of the wealth he said himself we need to spread the wealth around.
Now is that that's one that's one of the tenets of socialism but it's more the liberal left which he's always been -- he's always been in the left -- Of American politics that's why he voted 94 times.
Against any tax cuts or for tax increases that's why he voted for.
The democratic resolution.
A budget resolution.
That would wear -- that would impose taxes on us raise taxes on some individual.
Who makes 42000 dollars a year.
That's why he has the most liberal voting record in the United States senate a moment so so is is one of the tenets of socialism redistribution of wealth not just socialism a lot of other liberal.
And left wing philosophies redistribution of the wealth I don't believe and it.
I believe in wealth creation by -- upon.
But that senator you voted for the 700 billion dollar bailout that's being used partially.
American banks isn't that socialism that.
Is reacting to a crisis that student greed and excess in Washington.
And what this administration is doing wrong and what Paulson is doing wrong.
It's not going out and buying a home loan mortgages home mortgages.
And giving people new mortgages at the new value of their homes so they can stay in their home.
They're bailing out the banks are bailing out these institutional interest of course it was a package that had to be enacted because their economy.
Was about to go into the tank.
During that during the depression we had a a program.
To take care the way they went out and bought homeowners mortgages.
And then over time they even made money is the values of homes began to increase if we don't turn the housing market what's that catalyst.
That greed and accession Fannie Mae and Freddie.
Which some of us.
Proposed legislation to rein in the Democrats were in charge of congress for almost six.
Have for the last couple years and they did not act.
And so and so and Obama did not act.
But the point is that of course when that when he when he and that's reason why we have government to help those who need help who can't help themselves.
And when time of crisis to step in and.
And do what's necessary.
To preserve their lives and futures of innocent people there wasn't main street America that causes.
He was Washington of.
Off senator one tactic that you just been using in these final days is robo calls automatic -- automatic automated telephone calls and at people's homes and let's listen to one of them areas.
-- -- Senator back in 2000 that that that there's at.
Salute lead to true can ask the question not but but -- before you do that is absolutely.
And I don't care about mr.
Ayers and all of Andy's wife who was on the top ten most wanted list.
I care about everybody know on the relationship between the two of them that's legitimate.
-- Obama and bill Ayers served on the board of the woods foundation and they gave 230000.
Dollars to acorn.
What's that all about.
He said that he was just a guy in the neighborhood he wasn't just a guy in the neighborhood we know we need to know the full extent of that relationship that isn't accurate.
Robo call but senator back if I'm right back and 10000 when you were the target of robo calls you call these.
Hate calls and they work and you said the following.
I promise you I have never and will never had anything to do -- that kind of political tactic.
Now you've hired the same guy who did the robo calls against you.
Two reportedly T do the robo calls against Obama and the Republican senator Susan Collins the co chair of your campaign in Maine has asked you to stop the robo calls we'll he would do that.
Of course not these are legitimate and truthful and they are far different.
And phone calls that were made.
About my family.
And about certain aspects that -- things that this is this is dramatically different.
And either you haven't students see those things in 2000 no I -- war.
You don't know the difference between that and what -- is a legitimate issue.
And that is Senator Obama being truthful with the American people but let me tell you what else I think you should be talking about the American people should be talking about.
In the debate the other night I asked Senator Obama.
The statement made by John Lewis.
A man and I admire and respect and written about.
That connected to you can't just terrorism -- -- later civil rights leader American hero that connected me and Sarah Taylor to segregationist.
Two two of the campaign of George Wallace and even alluded.
In the bombing of -- Church where fort children and four children.
And I asked him to repudiate that statement I have repudiated every statement made by any fringe.
Person in the Republican Party.
And it has come up from time to time and it probably will the fact that Senator Obama would not repudiate that statement.
I think is.
Something the American people -- good judgment about.
That robo call is accurate it is totally accurate and there's no -- comparison.
Between it and the things that -- it's done and said in -- -- I I want to ask you about millionaires last may Bill -- asked you about Ayers and also about reverend Jeremiah Wright and here is what you had to say let's watch.
This campaign is not going to be about in all due respect about Reverend Wright.
Mister -- is going to be about vision and it's going to be about a plan of action for the American people are hurting right now.
But senator about it and that's -- -- senator -- -- companies that let me ask the question but senator according to a New York Times poll this week and let's put up on the -- -- you can -- yet.
62% of independents.
Now think you're spending more time attacking Obama and explaining what you would do as president.
Haven't -- gone on the attack against Ayers because you're behind.
Facts are stubborn things Senator Obama has spent more money on attack ads against me than any campaign in history.
In all due respect.
To that kind of -- I know what kind of campaign run I know what we're seeing of the rallies we need to keep Americans in their home we need to create jobs we need to keep taxes low.
We need to restore this economy that's what this campaign.
Is all about.
And that's why we're gonna do well and that's why we're gonna win of course mister Ayers is an issue of course there's other acorn is an issue there's a number of issues.
That are out there.
But what Americans want to hear is what we're telling them that -- is we're not going to spread the wealth around we don't think we need to do that.
We're going to create jobs we have Joe the plumber create jobs for America.
And we're gonna show on the way to do it by keeping taxes low and restoring our economy is this and we can talk about this process stuff for the entire time we're together I'm glad to do that.
But my message to the American people as I got a plan to get our economy out of the ditch and that's what we're gonna do.
Senator McCain we need take a break.
