Bush joins us in studio.
President it is an honor to have you here thank you for being here with us.
And earlier this week the president's long awaited memoir decision points hit bookstores worldwide.
And in our studio audience tonight are some of the key figures who -- vice President Bush throughout his eight years in office.
Former White House chief of staff Andy card former white house Press Secretary Dana Perino also former counsel to the president -- used.
And former National Security Adviser Steve Hadley.
-- -- thing called me for being with us tonight and -- -- okay.
Your -- Mr.
President it's a personal -- to become a little bit like a rock star -- are your book tour and get people sleep and overnight.
Outside a bookstore in Dallas and thousands and thousands of people you.
Via a sign about -- -- 400 books and I couldn't thank people enough.
For shown interest and I appreciate it my if my objective is step.
Explain what it was like to be the president of this great country who have them.
I -- and I fully understand some people agree with the decisions I made some of them didn't but nevertheless.
If they read the book they'll have a sense of why I've read a lot of history.
Prior to -- presence -- during the prisons and realize that it.
It just takes time for the true history of any administration to show up and there's no need to try to shape it.
I've tried to explain my view of of of history they see eight years in which isn't White House but eventually objective historians will come and analyze.
The decisions that my administration made in the results of those decisions form portly but.
I feel great thank you you know I really don't miss -- I do miss being pampered.
Especially at addressing trafficking into the studio.
And I -- -- in the commander in chief.
I love our military.
I cannot tell you and I hope people get a sense of in the book up.
About how my respect.
For the military -- during my presidency and I love military families as well and -- I'm glad some people I got to note during my presidency in the military with us today.
Well we're gonna get to them in the course of this.
You have been reluctant.
And as a matter of fact almost unwilling when -- -- in -- you -- kind of laughing -- -- a little -- because -- -- -- -- a little -- and -- and lot has happened in two years since you've left office.
You did you you it seems that you argue -- just do not want to weigh in non current affairs.
I have first of all trying to Rihanna is a sense of anonymity.
Which I know is impossible but nevertheless.
It's worth the effort -- -- I don't think it's.
Good for the country.
To have a former president.
Criticizing his successor fire roared away again he would want to know my views of of the man who spent succeeded -- And I don't think it's good I really Don -- is good for the institution of presidency.
That as well they've got planet critics.
And not -- on your want to hit it couldn't.
-- -- -- -- -- I have Dahmer do it I think it's comfortable.
Not being out there opining and you know blow creating.
Makes me comfortable.
You know I I just maybe it's my background and I grew up in new York and and every once in awhile I guess if I was listening to criticism blame Sean Hannity it's a lot of people do.
Or -- of people to blame bush.
I think it would be -- a natural temptation at some point to wanna hit back but you don't want to are really down.
-- you know Isiah for drug in politics a long time and I've seen all kinds of tactics.
And it's just a tactic I don't.
I didn't -- vice president and I don't I just don't feel any need to frankly don't pay that much attention to it.
Yeah I'm not saying my wife doesn't pay attention it is -- very good advocate but.
You this is you see we just came through a historic election I mean the biggest number of house seats changing hands in mid term election seventy years ten governorships.
Legislative seats changed hands.
Statement by the American people.
What do you think -- an election.
Well you know I I -- I've got a unique perspective on these off year elections since I went through two of them as president 2002.
I felt the election was about whether or not my administration was taken right measures to protect the country -- the people said yes so we picked up -- only.
-- administration to have done so since Franklin Roosevelt.
And 2006 is a little different story.
In the book.
Talk about this a little bit and more people kind of tired of me.
And I understood that I -- at the truth -- matters after.
You may -- some Ice-T V screen for six years they can get tired of it secondly the Iraq War -- right you -- different path and.
That's okay love you yeah.
-- the Iraq War wasn't going well plus our party.
It lost its way.
We have sex scandals we have bridges to nowhere we had he had an opportunity to reform social security and Republicans balked.
And the people were tired of it.
And so we got -- as I -- same thing happen in 2010.
The American people took a look didn't like with -- -- what they were seen in and they came out to vote and I think that you know even though I was on the losing -- in 2006 it's a healthy process.
For people to be able to show up expressed their will and -- and and things changed.
You use your very open in this book.
-- first -- you talk about your life your personal life.
And you do you tell the story about how your wife Laura asked you the question can you remember the last time.
You ever had a drink yes and you answer of course I can't.
And then I couldn't.
Drinking had become I have -- I -- I have a habitual personality.
Smoke a lot.
And then in order get off cigarettes -- had a good it.
It's Copenhagen or get off culminating had to go along -- beech -- in order to get of these -- had to go to single artist that's.
And the same thing was happening you know alcohol.
It was all right before out any responsibilities -- all right to be kind of carefree and drinking then all of a sudden I became husband and dad.
And I realize that alcohol was becoming was competing for my affections.
And so when Morris said.
Can you tell meeting which had a drink this this is after a period of time and wish she had become concerned about my drinking and I began to.
And and and her statement got me more concerned.
And I begin to focus -- should the -- I grew up.
And realize -- certain responsibilities in life that you have to assume and and so with that the reason -- tell that story is -- -- one I want people understand.
The person who made the decision to run for president and secondly I hope somebody reads that book realizes that he or she can quit drinking and upon that decision.
All future decisions were made including everyone as president you said it wouldn't have happened but for that decision well would've been president I'm confident because then they tell a couple of stories in -- about -- alcohol loosened my -- What was have hit.
One we -- one in particular about.
If you wanna tell I was they you're at a dinner with the mom and dad and and he blurted out and my wife and I've been drinking no question I was -- and I -- to this beautiful woman sitting next to me.
What is sex like after fifty.
Yeah and nobody laughed at the table and and they -- this is saying my parents were.
Mortified -- was furious.
My Brothers -- sister where you can stared at their food.
And I woke up the next day with the remorse is and call the woman apologized and all my fiftieth birthday I got to know farmer she said their governor well.
His -- -- there is not tell the story is is that it -- also put in there you know I have my daddy's eyes in my mother's mouth.
From and that alcohol.
Would take that kind of bluntness and or the -- during turn into something.
That that really was not attractive.
And I tell the story -- myself to set up the case.
To the reader for me that for -- understand I needed to quit I wouldn't take a break we have more coming up straight ahead with president George W.
Bush his advisers at our studio audience.
