A Good Friday afternoon everyone welcome into gadgets and games I am your host Clayton Morris this is foxnews.com.
And we're going to be talking about the week in technology some big stories this week -- -- got some interesting segments lined up for you so coming up here on the show were issued a five best lap tops of twenty -- gonna break those down -- -- hours here from laptop magazine.
Sucks to see him for PC that will also be here we're going to be talking quite a bit about windows phone seven you think he's tried out.
Twenty different windows phone devices and maybe just three of them.
We're gonna dive into those -- show up that he may actually have a Samsung galaxy tab -- his knapsack as well we'll show you that tablet.
But first let's dive into one of the biggest stories of the week was call of duty black ops in its first day selling 360.
Million dollars where the games.
Then projected for five days -- 550.
Million dollars of sales one of the largest video game releases in history.
And also we're gonna talk about Microsoft connect second but first let me introduce our guest mark let's say -- As Scott Stein both of pre game from CNET against those two great show there on cnet.com and can check out pregame degree of talk about video games all week and you guys were indicted in the black -- this week obviously.
First results what -- you guys think of you -- been living and breathing it.
-- -- it but I feel like.
I I got a lot of what I expected -- kind of I got a comforting warm hug -- the future but it's.
I think everything you expected but that's what's here and that's what's so appealing about -- and you know what you're gonna get it's if it's a first person shooter what's different this time.
-- -- I think they really fleshed out the multiplayer.
On the one of them the main things about the new model -- -- features is that you have.
The ability to upgrade your -- -- your new attachments and then.
You can also buy new contracts.
So basically a little mini missions com.
So it just lets you.
And you diving right in didn't like in between -- when things I was surprised by was that there's not a lot of lag time in between each level.
-- -- with a lot of these shooters with -- all week long movie style vignettes in between each in each week's level it's you're being thrust right back into the next battle them.
Is a very it's a very quick as like a very hyper key movie style and you're dealing with the resulting in place and out of an interrogation -- so.
You have this feeling it's kind of feels example and a great political thriller.
And you're also getting these little bits and pieces threat history.
But it's it's a you know they they put a little more story focus on that.
But again it's our Michelman when the greatest hits of moments of the cold war on celebrity appearances dating -- -- Gary Oldman is -- any plays one of their voices and who else is that.
-- remember also but even like a historical figures and only JFK and right -- -- instinct you it's almost as a feeling of an Oliver Stone you know type.
Movie I surprised by the success of this game 550 million dollars projected definitely not.
I feel like anything that is call of duty first person shooter it's written that sweet spot.
That I feel like has always been popular since the beginning when Saddam.
Goldeneye and that's kind of what started it just hasn't died out yet.
Always seem like a lack of innovation on the space we're seeing like these regard to -- and titles call of duty was seen me a modern war for modern warfare two.
We're getting used to these sort of companies like was it a warm hug yeah it's a lack of innovation in this space what's.
Get rid of the call of duty series or or not because -- selling so many we look at Activision stock earlier this week it actually was down.
Right is it because of a lack of innovation.
Well it's hard because I think unity in the economy is down an Indian companies have had -- -- innovation I love in addition to the same time.
-- -- challenging cost and we have a game that has been so successful is as the cold duty series.
Meaning biblically you're beholden to continue it and in a way it's it's kind of a sport I mean you're playing this online sport and so.
You know the rules of that you wanna keep continuing and it's furthering this.
Type of online place if -- you break those in.
You think you're gonna disappoint people there were couple criticism -- about some glitches.
There's that one scene or just goes to black.
There's one scene where you're being driven one way where you're being told to go one way and you're not supposed to be going that way did you experience any glitches in any issue all I didn't really have too many problems with the glitches but.
-- any game you always experience a bunch of problems that are not as smooth as they should be and then they -- a roll up the the updates afterwards.
So bottom line quality game worth picking up I mean it is also -- -- might say the bloodiest game.
The most violent video uniting and ever seen this takes it to a new level doesn't it really is a -- remember the days -- speaking of like playing shooters when I was a kid.
Where -- use the color of the -- different color there was blood at all they like green man green line right here for you -- -- of -- -- you're seeing people -- the pieces I mean is really graphic.
In this game.
So you know just slapping them from the -- on it in the video pretty much now and yeah yeah it's totally for the holidays elevated people want this -- -- Christmas -- might be a hard sell that -- I wouldn't -- for kids that I it's you know way kids do by a lot of these games -- -- have you -- to be aware this is going to be.
You know Saving Private Ryan level and above is a far as far as the graphic.
Nature of war also the advertising campaign was adjusting had a massive advertising campaign for this game that millions of dollars spent on this and you seeing.
You be the theme of the advertising campaign -- we there's a soldier in all of us sort of this will be unit the singular idea but as you talked about they've really boned up the amount of people playing online.
I think one million people on launch tonight we're playing it online simultaneously on Xbox Live.
That's an incredible number.
And is that really where the success comes from in these games is the online experience -- campaign is such a small percentage of what you get out of the game I think most people buy these games because -- that competitive.
Element with first person shooters.
That that everyone wants I mean you -- on YouTube and you see so and so has whenever ten consecutive kills in a row right.
And then those videos you -- get you know thousands of views.
There's just something about the competition first person shooters that I think fighting games and other games for some reason just.
Are not able to match right now via.
If you're seeing and you know it's that sort of you can play your living room by yourself and I have to have a friend sitting there next year but that's quite a different story that we saw with Microsoft connect this week.
A finally the launch of one of the most anticipated gaming console console add ons.
In in a long long time.
And -- Microsoft connect rolling out this week which is of course the -- on sensor bar -- stick on your current Xbox-360.
Initial thoughts about it I mean I I've reviewed it played with it for about about two weeks now.
I think it's look I think it's gonna be -- one of the most.
You know pieces of video game equipment this holiday season we're looking at tag connected ventures was bundled inside the system and comes with it -- very cool by the yeah.
Good news is that he be doing the actual dancing -- this is connected ventures and into the took a play of the page right out of Nintendo's -- -- here which is.
You know what bundling game and -- -- five games in one -- because -- a big hit this holiday season.
But I think this holiday.
There isn't a lot of there is no other new hardware really so.
If you came out you know every -- -- -- -- -- wants something that that's new and exciting this is it and it's definitely the newest technology.
Plays that I used to for a week before came out in red added that in writing about him playing with it and it is pretty astonishing how -- your body.
I would say that it's it's definitely a -- a lot more active and be requires you know certain.
Living room space requirements ready that not everybody might have been a dorm room but.
Beyond that it's it's far and -- the most unique experience this year in being intact and this is the kind of technology that brings in.
Lots of new gamers because I don't think hardcore gamers would see something like this and -- like I have to have it.
This mostly just pulls in people that otherwise wouldn't play because it doesn't have the intimidation I guess -- but.
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- We talked about space a little bit Scott and I were talking yesterday but space in the living -- also an issue.
And and I kind of some backed up against my couch in my living room is it is a pretty decently sized living room we have -- table in the middle.
And you know they're you -- and and it actually want me to back up further so.
If you stand too close to the TV.
If it sensors on that you know throws and sort of reads your region in three dimensions don't activate so.
You you have to stand -- -- farther window back and also I think that requires it makes heavy larger TV a little bit have been nicer packaged with that because if you have.
-- never -- smaller TV in your standing six feet back.
You probably not going to experience -- it's -- -- perfect for really a larger screen HD.
That's an unspoken part of the pressure that's part of a big rec room you wanna have a yet but -- Ford needs plus inch TV with.
We've already seen one moron who smashed the ceiling fan playing it smashed his when a friend volleyball spike and and hit his ceiling fan and went right into his HD television and you need.
Around six to ten feet they recommend the plan that's I think that's a stretch for I -- people in New York departments -- this big site.
It's and even in normal -- -- -- even non New York places were having some issues with the size of this thing -- so Microsoft connect I think it's going to be a big success although I think one thing that has gotten I was we're talking yesterday about this was.
What are the issues -- people still don't understand that it's simply an add on to your current Xbox-360 -- a lot of people are thinking this is something new from Microsoft no it.
That is that a problem of having a hard time convincing people that you just you don't need to buy a whole new device for this you just adding it on I think maybe they should have branded it.
Differently when -- be like the Xbox connectors something because when you just -- connect and it's right that we just referred to is connected it's kind of confusing to give to -- is if you're an Xbox-360 -- you think a great for under fifty bucks I can sort of make this a little we like and -- -- sixty gets -- life out of it.
Things that are people going to stores for the holidays and it's gonna say I wanna connect.
They're gonna think it's under fifty dollars and they might be -- of the bundle right you need is actually going to be about 400 dollars and in the game say it it changes the equation I think it's a way.
We -- connected 150 bucks -- seem like we price for the dramatic display that kid is gonna be don't Christmas morning when you he opens a box that he just has a connect and you can't do anything with a camera -- -- grandma bought bought you connect are you excited and -- the family knows that you need the Xbox.
To power that connect disrupted -- kids are doing the research -- not the parents Leo we hope so we hope so.
We -- working on pregame.
Next week we are probably going to do sonic colors and then maybe even whether games.
Our other buddy Jeff Bakalar who's also our cohost.
Is going to be back so definitely taken out it's on iTunes and if you go to cnn.com should pregame interview that you'll great and a digital city GAAP and his son on that podcast as well -- CNN.
You'll -- -- there cool great podcast they're go to iTunes download them great content as well Mark Scott thanks.
Gracie I guess it's -- have a great weekend as well when we come back we're going to be diving into windows phone seven with such deceit and for PC Mac will be right back.
-- -- Welcome back to gadgets and games on this Friday afternoon when -- we are joined.
Now by -- -- and lead mobile analyst from PC mag dot com he.
Eats and breathes and sleeps with cellphones and you've been doing nothing but the windows phone seven lately.
The nine different devices that are ruled out for windows phone.
What's your impression so far over all of Leo of the OS this week we finally launched.
On the carriers to tell us about.
I think it's a really interesting first step for Microsoft I mean it's a one point -- they are behind the competition in certain ways they're gonna have to move very fast to catch up.
But there's a lot of good things here I think especially.
The Xbox Live gaming.
Not necessarily the Xbox Live -- part of it but just the quality of the games is excellent the quality of the games already ahead of android.
And the Zune music and video experience is once again ahead of and -- -- and you're getting to play with the Zune pass -- get free you get access to is unlimited songs.
Albums it was a nine dollars a month for the Zune pass something like something like that but in the -- -- it you know downloading -- -- but you're getting what like ten free downloads for the month for the Zune -- get ten free downloads a month and then all the songs.
All the songs you can listen to that you want via com and then of course one -- it's really -- been impressive over the past couple weeks is Microsoft has gotten a bunch of really big name third party developers on board.
And so you -- Netflix now and you see slacker and you see.
Some really high end games from that people like EA in game -- There's there's just it.
Really high quality in terms of the third party apps coming through now solicit a look here you've got a Samsung focus here now of all the different phones -- looked at that -- running Windows 7 is the Samsung focus your favorite.
-- the -- focus is the best of the initial -- -- phone seven devices in the US.
There's five that are coming out right about now that's this guy the best one then there's the HTC surround -- on that.
On AT&T and the LT quantum.
And then on T-Mobile there's the HTC 67.
And the -- venue pro.
And of the bunch we're -- the focus the best it has this incredible right super -- led screen the screen really pops.
It's a very nice -- -- the screens tight it's high resolution.
You can see how much the bold colors of windows phone seven show up well on the screen.
Scott good phone quality good camera quality better reception and some of its competitors with that a little bit that way okay it's you know open office.
Yep now Microsoft on Microsoft -- the other and then yet here's here.
Let's see -- and -- back to the Zune here you here's your Xbox Live icon.
And that shows.
And it pulls in your avatar it also pulls in all of your.
You're your Gamertag and it pulls in all of your points that you and your payments and you don't get points and achievements playing Xbox Live games on here.
And eventually you'll be able to play some turn by turn games against people on.
X boxes or computers so -- Oh boy into a store right now and I'm thinking for the holidays I want to pick up a new phone -- -- an iPhone four I'm looking -- a lot of the android -- phones that are -- in the marketplace and I'm looking in windows phone seven.
What's your what's your bottom line here before you feel windows phone right now is a strong enough proposition for people to pick it up for that pick it up as their main phone or is -- still little ways to go.
I'm always a little hesitant to to recommend that people -- the first of any platform.
By the one point out so what I'm saying right now is if you're already into either Xbox law -- -- If if you have an affinity to these Microsoft certain services then yes absolutely pick it up right now.
Otherwise is I always say wait for the second product in the series -- it's a little more mature Apple's a lot -- care.
Yeah as far as the hardware has gotten -- great camera on here as well that's one of the things I'm really impressed with on windows phone is the camera.
And speaking of Microsoft they really wanted to try to create a point -- -- environment for the camera.
Where you didn't have to power on the phone to to use a -- there's a button on the side that basically turns your turn your phone right into -- camera.
Yeah -- and you don't have to worry about power and on the phone and going through some sort of application to do it.
Yeah I -- all the windows phones have a dedicated camera button they all have a five megapixel camera.
One thing to watch out for though is that the five megapixel cameras are -- very different quality.
And -- the focuses camera is much sharper than say VH TC HD sevens.
So it's one reason you have to reserve -- via this and needs filters on here as well you can -- black and white sepia tone to your photos.
And one of the things I really like to about it is your ability to share.
Right from you know one of the things that windows wanted to do was make it easy for you to do the things.
That maybe take one or two if -- were saying this but on apple you know -- sort of the philosophy of one click one or two clicks to get somewhere.
We think about sharing on the iPhone to FaceBook.
You having -- launch -- FaceBook application click on the photos icon go through your camera roll pick the photo of you wanna share to FaceBook and uploaded to your your friends wall to your wall whatever.
With windows phone what they really did was say you know what right in the photos application.
What's the share of the photo.
Right to FaceBook but that's something you're seeing on and right as well and in fact some of the android phones -- even better social networking integration and that's does sure when this phone is really well integrated to FaceBook.
If your life is on FaceBook you're gonna have a great experience with when those found.
But it's much weaker for instance with Twitter Twitter if you're a big Twitter where windows software to I think that there yet it's lacking is definitely lacking which -- if you want to connect to Twitter foursquare.
Then you'll probably have a better experience on android.
Which has been applicants for those services but once more this is just getting started they just need to sell a certain number of these so they can start the ball rolling.
And then I think this platform filling and pick up steam.
That's windows phone you also brought in here we get another -- let's play with this this is the Samsung galaxy tablet much ballyhooed this week.
You know that you -- -- some reviews saying it was absolutely terrible -- actually -- -- one review well I saw a couple that didn't like you are so one that was said it was terrible -- -- others at that -- -- what's your sense of this thing.
So yeah seven inches its us.
An inch android powered tablet.
-- from Samsung the hardware is terrific I think the hardware is spot on.
What's missing right now are acts experiences that take advantage of the tap of the tablet form.
It pretty much acts like blown up phone right now like -- like an android phone for the viewing impaired if users just a phone size and excellent yeah give you some sense of the there's a grand total of one -- that is totally designed for the tablet form factor right now it's the Wall Street Journal.
You know little bit -- the it is intensely vulnerable there there and this is what looks like and that's a great tablet experience.
But Samsung is willing to go a little bit out on a limb here they're gonna put out galaxy tabs on every single carrier.
And they're gonna get enough out there so that hopefully there'll be enough on shelves the people start programming interesting apps for the is and it's one that perhaps comes that's when this gets interest.
So that people write me and say you know give as much of the tablets coming out for the holidays what's the tablet choice to pick up for the holidays and my husband wants the tablet what do you say it won't mean look my bottom line is absolutely the iPad -- -- -- -- ecosystem is just not there aren't any of these other tablet device -- -- exactly exactly the hardware is here -- the -- -- galaxy -- is the only one I would recommend other -- the -- It's the the only one that's really -- contender.
But the iPad is the only one with apps that.
Make you want to buy it yet right yet the ecosystem isn't there.
Great stuff what -- guys working on over PC mag I guess the holidays here and up to -- you're just living and breathing all of these windows phones non stops.
Our -- -- -- tell you that we still have to windows phones together the Dell venue pro and the LT quantum.
We have three more versions of the galaxy tab to through we're gonna do the created -- Verizon -- AT&T US cellular.
And of course all the Smartphones for the holidays it's it's -- -- be really does it.
-- check out everything that Sasha -- does over -- PC mag dot com such always good to see you thanks so much appreciates it.
We'll take a quick break here we'll be right back remarks -- hour from laptop magazine running down his five favorite laptops of 2010 so far maybe they'll be a few more by the end of the year we'll be right back.
