She's now trying to reform America's high school education.
One classroom at a time from taking on teacher's unions to getting rid of tenure Michelle -- wants to put students first.
She is just right now it's.
Actually the founder and CEO of her group that you found and that too long ago called students for its -- in the -- I got the email from -- first and you've got.
An agenda that means -- member I am.
Yes we released our policy agenda yesterday were very excited about it we've gotten some really good feedback.
-- basically what we wanted to do is outline for legislators for people who are running school district's policy makers.
That kinds of laws and policies that need to be in place in order for really aggressive school reform -- -- called.
Where do we start.
Well we start with make sure making sure that we are treating teachers like the professionals that they are valuing them for their impact on student achievement.
We also start with.
Making sure that parents and families are empowered with real choices some real information right and then lastly wanna make sure that taxpayer dollars are spent wisely and that we're not we're not wasting -- especially in this tough.
-- -- it seems like such a no brainer why we've been doing this.
That wave for a long time.
I I think that that rather than looking them back and and saying why haven't we done this -- rather we should look forward.
Because right now interestingly enough with the fiscal crisis that we're in the middle of it's an opportunity.
For us to completely.
Re orient ourselves to what matters most and you know the recent.
Is really far behind compared to our international counterparts that combined with with the fiscal situation I think is a real opportunity for us.
And we spend so much money on educating every child in this country and yet the results just are not very promising.
One of the things I -- you want to do is examined teacher tenure.
It simply does not work there a lot of really good teachers out there who you would like to pay a lot more money but the unions -- election.
Right and and that's one of the things that we talk about in the policy agenda the fact that as a profession.
Many teachers union contracts actually prohibit us.
From paying the most highly effective teachers more money you you wanna you wanna retain those people you -- -- and sent them.
So you want you have to you don't recognize and reward their work so you wanna pay the more.
And the same time you want to make sure that that you are not providing tenure protections for.
Ineffective teachers are to it to stay in the classroom so you actually have to have both sides patty -- get really came here.
Because the union is powerful.
And -- -- powerful what we believe that the American people.
Who are who want to represent the interests of children.
Our I can actually be more powerful so what we're saying -- personal no teacher should be should ever be afraid of of being fired because of discriminatory reasons are arbitrarily or anything like that so we -- -- make sure that that that doesn't happen but the same time when we think about.
Cool -- in the public education system deserves protection.
Has to be the children not -- No wait a minute I was -- the argument from the teaches you to look we're fighting so hard to get its union contract because we are fighting for the student.
That's what they say -- Well I mean here is that -- they're fighting for their teachers they're fighting for remember their job right I mean we can't begrudge the T -- union.
For propping up protecting their members because that's what they're supposed to do I think part of that issue and part of what students first aims to do.
-- make sure that there is a voice at the table that represents the kids no kidding well there is now it's called students -- that's right Michelle -- is.
Top the the big banana.
-- what's the website of people would like usually www.
Students for us that -- and we encourage everyone to sign -- up to become -- -- -- very good.
-- very nice to see you live in studio today thanks all right.
