Welcome back everyone President Obama and congressional GOP you've had a rocky relationship for the last 22 months pledged yesterday.
To finally seek common ground.
Topping the agenda of course taxes now some critics asking was the meeting productive and will lead to both sides working together.
-- -- -- Robert Gibbs joins us live from there you go in the briefing room of the White House good morning to you sir.
Good morning guys -- are you are doing okay although how you doing because a lot of headlines today encapsulated what happened yesterday at the -- summit.
That essentially you think.
Then nothing happened nothing got done.
Well look I don't think and I don't think anybody here I doubt anybody I Capitol Hill figured that.
We spend a couple hours and solve every one of our differences together but we have to political parties because we have.
Two different philosophies but I think did yesterday's meeting.
From the presence perspective and from what I heard from capitol -- perspective.
Was a a productive discussion the beginning of a new relationship.
And now we have a path forward for discussing and negotiating on an agreement for taxes.
But also talked through issues like a nuclear reduction treaty that the president believes can and should be done.
By the end of the year so I think the meeting was productive again.
Certainly our expectations were not that all very issues would be solved in two hours yeah.
But and and I do give you an -- for optimism on that but I think the American people.
The American people want answers now Robert the tax -- thing that runs out in about three weeks I think the American people expected more to happen I mean let's face it.
Obama knows where he stands on the tax issue it's not like it's gonna be a surprise right.
-- -- Well but but but understand we live in a world where.
Democrats and Republicans have to work together.
That's what the president talked -- -- that's what Republicans talked about this isn't gonna be just what one person or one party wants.
That the message coming out of this election was not more gridlock -- not more partisan political game success but can people sit together at a table.
Work through some issues make some progress.
Move this country forward strengthen our economy.
And ensure most of all that middle class families don't see their tax bill go up at the end of the year.
You're absolutely right that we've got until the end of this month to make sure that we solve this problem because.
When we celebrate new years eve we do not or -- in the new year we do not want to see tax rates for middle class families go up not in this economy.
And not ever and I think that's what we're gonna start doing today.
-- budget director of Treasury Secretary are gonna go up to Capitol -- -- with members and senators and see if we can't get a degree -- But did the president take himself out of the equation.
By putting those two in charge so that he could appease the left.
No no look look let's let's understand that.
It's Jack -- to know exactly.
Who they work for.
They work for the present United States and they're gonna go up there to work right now on is what the president would like to see.
And that's to ensure that middle class families don't have their taxes go up on January -- Firms are watching here at Eric Cantor said about with the president mentioned to him I think of that 33 minutes behind closed doors without -- takers -- staffers.
Here is yesterday.
I was -- encouraged by the president's.
His perhaps not having reached out enough I toss.
In the last session and that this meeting was the beginning of a series.
In which he hoped that we could work together in a different.
Passion for the benefit of the American people giving the problems that we.
-- that was would -- that's why I'm optimistic.
Optimistic that something could take apple could happen is the last few years I've never heard anything -- a Republican saying that the president said that.
Will be easier for the president to reach across the aisle with a diminished Nancy Pelosi.
I think we we live in a world certainly the beginning of the year where.
The Republicans are gonna control one house.
The Democrats are gonna control the senate.
And and obviously the president's going to be a Democrat so -- -- order to make progress we're gonna have to work together the president certainly.
Didn't just do that a private session but did that in front of everybody and said.
He he take some responsibility for for not doing enough and wants to do his part in.
In doing better it to create their relationship to reach out and to make progress.
It's gonna have to be a two way street and I think the leaders from both sides understand that.
The message out of -- selection was had a we strengthen this economy had -- we keep our country safe and happily do that together.
Right right let's shift gears side to Wiki leaks I'm sure you've heard this is guy he put a bunch of stuff on the Internet lot of -- embarrassing for the United States of America.
I know the Department of Justice is apparently trying to figure out how to prosecute this guy and it it's a little tricky because of all sorts of reasons but what do we heard from the president on this issue.
Well the the president it through the secretary of state and through many of the people that work here have spoken.
I don't want -- clearly done on how they are upset on.
The fact that hundreds of thousands of documents.
Many highly classified.
Have been leaked.
Just as we saw earlier in the year battlefield reports from the previous administration -- None of that helps our national security.
Interest is the is as the American people and the the world has a great interest in the United States of America.
A foreign policy that keeps the world saying right and it reduces -- against their weapons.
-- this this is by many accounts the largest security breach in American.
And the present United States as well there are very I don't know that the president noted that has been very busy doing other things talking about the federal pay -- talking about taxes.
And not one statement.
Well -- that's -- again.
The secretary of state worked for the present -- United States I think that that's pretty clear.
Where he stands on this understand that.
The president has -- as you mention.
Lots of responsibilities and -- let's make sure this economy is strong and growing let's make sure our country is safe and secure.
Our foreign policy and our country stronger than one guy -- -- website -- should not and and we should never be afraid of one guy who popped down 35 dollars and -- a web address Arab foreign policy is stronger than I -- We're a stronger country has -- but it's more or less scared of one guy would won -- -- -- -- -- -- MS embarrassment and things become -- let me ask you this has the attorney general.
Let the president down by waiting to them all and not going after this guy in the summer when he and his first major document dump.
What was the major -- for investigation on espionage charges.
Look look guys there's an ongoing criminal investigation.
And because of that I'm certainly not gonna get into the specifics of this understand that.
We've got to look a whole host of things including.
How somebody can put a thumb drive and a computer copy documents and ultimately lead them.
To this website or to anybody that that's not helpful to our national security but again yes.
Let's not be scared of one guy with a laptop you know we're not -- -- actually see the data that's all but but but but but.
But let's not be scared of that okay this isn't this isn't something that that we have to shy away from.
-- -- -- we're the United States of America we have a robust foreign policy that pursues and national interest and ensures the safety and security of those around the world.
That's something that this administration and three administrations in the future regardless of what one guy with a web site or -- somebody doesn't leaking highly classified information okay those people are criminals and they'll be punished it's all right.
But let's not be afraid that where the United States of America okay Robert before you go -- question -- -- -- -- -- is live in -- studio right now which was your favorite.
Full house -- America's Funniest Home Videos.
Make a choice I get.
I mean it's gotta be America's -- somebody is you still see that on TV -- -- Right that's right exactly I will say.
That's that's gotta be hands down plus I'm sure -- there people on and on full house that are still cringing at what their hair look like way back -- its -- -- are good people -- -- -- you thank you very much for Jersey -- -- next guest Bob Saget is coming up.
