Forty minutes past the hour she made headlines taking on the teachers' unions in transforming the DC schools and he fought her changes as the president's.
Bob DC's teachers union but now Michelle -- and George Parker our team.
-- -- student first organization both join us live this morning good morning -- Good morning George let me start with you when you told Randi Weingarten who is the -- -- the American federation for teaches that you're gonna -- you're gonna join Michelle re.
Well what's your reaction.
She takes me back and say it really.
But about I think I'll read it first well have a lot of respect for Randy and I appreciate it up that she was very -- gracious.
She indicated she wished me well in that I was a good man suddenly she understands what it is I'm trying to do.
And that is those of us who really care about children.
We have to be able to put out what differences aside.
And work together for the benefit and children and I'm glad to see that Michelle and I have -- put those kind of things aside the differences aside and decided that we need to work together for the benefit of all children.
And I believe student first is about that I've met some wonderful people a student -- race.
And -- where do you stand the Michelle what did you have to bite your tongue -- when he came to working with George.
You know dirt I have always had a good relationship would never exactly seen eye to eye on things but one of the things I appreciate most.
Ballots him is the fact that he's willing to.
Speak out on some issues that are in -- in national dialogue right now like last in first out policies.
And articulate a view that's very different from -- from most union -- -- and I think it's one that reflects.
Actually -- a lot of teachers across the country are feeling.
And to hear a former union president say those things I think gives those teachers a lot of hope.
About what they can look forward to.
Sure and Michelle you've been on this program you've talked about as you just mentioned how you don't think that the last hired first fired policy is a good idea.
George what do you think about that policy do you think it should go to.
Well let me tell you what I believe I think all of those who are serious about but in the best teachers.
And thought about students we have to begin to look at those things that are in place that can prevent that I think they.
Last hired first fired as one of those things the reality is.
That how -- -- -- has been teaching.
It's no true indication.
As to how well they'll perform and get the current time -- Georgia we have to value performances George will you work to get rid of last hired first fired.
I will be willing to work to get rid of last hired first fired.
I think they've got big picture is what do review to -- would replace it will I think that I very very important.
Okay.
-- just real quick about teacher evaluations Michelle.
There's a big battle in New York about them how important is it in your overall agenda reform the school system in putting.
Pay.
And security along with the evaluation of the teacher.
Well look I think that teacher valuation is a cornerstone.
-- a lot of the reforms that we're talking about teachers need to know that they're going to be evaluated in a fair and transparent manner.
But I think there's a growing -- acknowledgment of the fact that how.
That your students are performing underneath you how how you can ensure that student achievement is actually rising.
Past to be a part of how teachers are evaluated and I think George believes that I think you know the governor.
In New York believes that I think states across the country.
Are now passing laws that indicate that this have to be.
In place for all state of valuations.
So so this is -- this is the direction that we're heading in as a country and I think that for teachers unions to sort of blanket laid.
The opposing this is just not acknowledging where we are.
Nation all right Lowell George Parker it's great to have you today on the program and now that you teamed up with Michelle re at students' first thank you both.
Thank you thank you what they.
