And welcome to fox car for a live on foxnews.com automotive editor Gary -- a little Memorial Day weekend coming up lots of car racing this weekend Formula One Grand Prix of Monaco big -- terrorists and of course the Indianapolis 500 stay -- Because later in the show we've got three time Indy 500 winner.
Helio Castroneves joining us here talk about his shot at -- winning number four a little tough -- this year.
But he's always factor in the race -- -- have him here a little bit later but first a couple other things we'll talk about the EPA.
Finally after much -- Some talk about maybe getting letter grades and that sort of thing involved has come up with new window stickers -- become IndyCar.
Next year a lot different than the ones we have now as you can see over there on the right side of the screen more or less than -- more of a focus on the combined fuel economy.
Of the car rather than the city and highway that's because now they have to get paired gasoline powered cars.
Two electric cars to plug in hybrid cars.
And they've done this through something -- miles per gallon equivalent that's going to be your big numbers there also we're going to be finding out how much exactly each car will save you compared to the average car.
Over the call over the course of five years that's the big number here over on the right side and of course the annual fuel -- playing a much larger role.
Down on the -- they're secure reliable cars coming up by these go into effect in 2013.
The carmakers can start using the next year that's one of the ones for the plug in hybrid -- there's the electric car one.
So a lot of new information differently.
Formulated as well but it's -- going to be very important to got lots of different cars.
Coming but not many cars cover all three of these areas you don't have -- many cars that are hybrids plug in hybrids and electric and gas cars.
We want to really awesome truck though it's available in just that any way you want it I'm sure you've never seen this before.
The -- -- look -- for because it is the craziest looking truck.
You've ever seen this is the bring back.
T Rex a -- heavy duty vehicle that's being made produced out in California.
And is available as an electric version which you -- it right there.
Also heavy duty gasoline engines diesel engines.
And even a hybrid with us now is the head of -- -- -- -- rod is in our LA studios in California thanks for joining us right.
I had either you're good so a lot of people don't know about this brand tell us about Brennan -- this is.
Started as an Italian truck company you guys actually manufactured these here in Chino, California correct.
Correctly originally was designed back in Italy never -- earlier you guys were part about the beat -- Steve design of the vehicles that we've done -- Steve -- -- was the original design and it was involved in the the design you know indeed regarding EB -- And so he actually did the design on the truck between the few or the only truck or vehicle that I know.
That has correctly and Exel skeleton and so the frame that you see only outside of the vehicle.
That is the actual flame that's not fake from -- this thing will.
Be able to impact.
It's five g.s of impact.
Not only it's a very unique design.
Problem extremely strong extremely rigid and -- -- -- three and have tons.
So it's the ultimate all cement truck made out of lightweight aluminum I understand mostly.
You know listen it's steal some composite.
The good mainframe is actually around two was a square to -- on top of it.
It's a very labor intensive.
We have manufacturing however it makes it extra we only strong.
-- -- small footprint but it.
Still it is able to carry you three -- have tons and we'll go anywhere we'll climb -- 45 degree hill.
It's basically the ultimate -- Colin -- killers -- It's it's it's a pretty extreme extreme duty truck.
Seriously -- vehicle got a little -- European flair to the design there now how long you've been in business here in the US and why haven't I seen one of these on the review here in New York.
We're obviously really knew -- mean as far as being in business we've been business approximately a year and a half.
Hmmm so the truck -- capital chassis is still being manufactured in Italy.
And so we've made an agreement was the Italian company did.
We are the -- here in the United States we actually own the name the -- the design everything is owned by house.
And then basically it comes in what's called an assembly of parts.
We install the final drive trade is being electric hybrid.
Or gasoline and peaceful.
Did you have all three of those -- and also compressed natural gas and understand power trains available throughout the guy who develop these these are a lot of high tech got power trains here is -- stuff -- engineering announced working with outside suppliers tell me about particularly via.
Plug in hybrid and electric power trades.
The plugging hybrids in the electric power was actually developed by us.
We did bring in some outside engineers.
That help us design and engineer news.
To drive train itself.
The other vehicle or -- the other drive train we're actually using lose series hybrid.
And we're using a small eco tech motor.
They were running 8200 kilowatt.
Drive from over.
Or 200 up to 200 -- Generate a martyr and so.
All that development got done here in the United States we've developed.
The 200 kilowatt motor which is also.
What's considered low voltage which is rather unique.
In most cases you know we're seeing 34500.
This is obviously extremely dangerous from you get zapped by 500 -- you're pretty much done.
-- 115 I think you -- in a pretty good chance.
Problem and it was done for a couple reasons number one is -- obviously safety aspect we're talking about for example.
First responders police officers firefighters.
Com obviously it's important that nobody gets killed but they're trying to rescue somebody were -- and maintenance mechanics.
-- over mechanic is working on the vehicle -- there is a great danger.
And our vehicle you don't necessarily need a flash to to work on it.
The other aspect that that we went to low voltage is because of the fact that.
The actual manufacture.
Of the below -- it's it's it's quite a bit cheaper.
Some of the contractors.
Do you controllers.
-- -- a lot cheaper to manufacture and so what's the -- negative using a low voltage setup.
There is a little bit of a drawback that.
That in the story about a 3% efficiency loss but what we've been able to do.
Just keep all the components really close together as -- the -- the controller.
-- all my look on top of its own cooling jacket.
And so at that point.
Were able to cool the converters were able to cool the motor.
And there is a little bit less sufficient although it's it's not from -- But that could be made up by it technically adding one or two extra batteries and that would.
-- -- -- So series hybrid set -- similar to the Chevy Volt or the upcoming Fister karma basically an extended range electric.
Assuming the the small motor doesn't actually drive the wheels you just providing electricity for -- electric motors.
Correct okay arranged he has every General Electric mode on that version and -- on the full electric version of AT Rex.
-- the full electric version of T Rex.
-- -- over -- would drive cycle but you're looking between the hunt and -- low range.
The series hybrid.
-- -- -- there could be 200 to 250 miles.
Obviously that's human events in the -- extent.
-- applications does this struck out mostly as a commercial vehicle ordered people my own them for -- personal use Hollywood types prisoner in LA in these big monsters.
It's it's a mix.
Obviously the the H one Hummer is gone.
We know we we definitely have targeted you know the group that used to drive let's say they've -- armor that wanted to be different special.
And there is that segment you know this would.
Replaced the H -- Hummer deal that -- is its distance from me this would definitely.
Take its place.
The other segment that we've really the truth is the fact that the municipalities.
Are looking for -- green vehicle.
And so it's government municipalities.
The segment of the -- -- Definitely the biggest meanest looking dream machine I've seen what is one of these costs though an electric version -- in that series plugin series hybrid version.
Electric but one toward the -- series Harvard who could be 145.
Home it is not a cheap vehicle that is the vehicle that won't go anywhere or do anything.
You know it's it on the -- -- -- -- -- -- -- five people it also has suspension siege.
It's a pretty need to -- I mean it's no no lack of attention you're driving around people take attention but it doesn't look of the -- Considering very electric Tesla Roadster costs -- 1101000 that actually sounds like a pretty good hill.
Are we feel so I mean actually we're quite competitive reprise I mean obviously the batteries are still a bit expensive.
But for the drive trend that we've developed with -- he -- receive permanent magnet.
Brush was DC.
You know that have puts out 325 horsepower.
Who was a very unique transfer case.
And the the -- could be uses it daily driver it actually fits in the regular parking spot.
So that's first important -- it's good value for the money.
Grey -- Greg USA some American ingenuity tied with some Italian engineering.
We build those things and you know California and now and -- that we are in California will be will be looking up as we have to get behind the -- that it looks like.
Allow truly great with the extra -- and by -- the children take a quick -- -- after that.
Time -- All right we're back Memorial Day weekend quickly approaching -- for car and doozy is that means one thing and one thing only the running of the Indianapolis.
500 mile race this year is particularly special because it marks the 100 anniversary since the first running of the race.
Back in 19111.
Guy who knows a little bit about.
Indianapolis is a big part of the track's history over the years three time winner of the Indianapolis 500 Helio Castroneves thanks so much for drug provided I think trying to show do you ever feel guilty about win in three races and innocent and -- and -- -- a hundred other business get some for the wars.
Oh be weird you know like in a few we have to win it three times but actually not -- very honored and proud of to be able to accomplish something that only through drivers are able to do is so.
Right now we're seeing because of that we're seeing a very unique opportunity to which is.
We need now for time and -- only three drivers were able to do that and that's.
AJ Foyt Rick Mears and Al as a senior so when you're talking on both legends and I'm I'm that close to join them I'd say it -- It's a dream come true in -- so certainly.
I still allow a lot to learn hand but -- of everything -- so that make my boss happy.
When the season starts how much do you think in the I would be champion this year how much you think and I -- to be ready to wind being in Indianapolis 500 as well you know they'd say it's all about the preparation and I think basically this year we actually -- start with a new colors there without shell V power Pennzoil ultra so we actually really happy about all this stuff for the new -- Sponsors and I'm happy to adjust for presenting them hopefully we can put this.
Red -- Machine up from and but again it's all bulk up preparation to -- has been very good in in all of the years they won fifteen times and because of that.
It shows -- how impressive is how important is -- -- preparation and I'm discount we got.
Maybe not starting in the best position do you like to be started as your record -- that's right this year down.
How important is getting polar being on the front -- in a five under -- 500 mile long race or any after the first ten -- is that not even an issue.
Well it's not the key for you to win a race but certainly you want to start alienated.
Middle of the pack and people might beg to be in trouble.
You know -- that you -- avoid those type of various.
What's it's not the key -- I started thirteenth I won a race I started eleventh I won a race.
I supplement mobilization of one race so it basically it's it's a team work as a team -- for your car sometimes -- fast car.
It's not the one who wins a race -- -- You've got to put all the bits together so -- you can position yourself and to be able to a -- conditioning in the race.
What it comes across however did you not always the top teens and up there on the front of the grid how it's -- and not one of the top consumer is here he's got pole position what's so much different about Indy.
That you know some of the better teams might not show up for qualifying day and some of the smaller teams can pull it all we're very surprise about that.
To be honest we we -- -- the -- -- was was fast last year.
And we end up to able to work very well and two take the -- position.
But this year unique situation happens you know several drivers.
That does not even as a regular season.
They didn't need that had had experienced -- -- 500 before.
But -- -- it was like just first time they're running their cars first time -- -- analysts and and there are starting right on the top ten so -- To be honest it's it's kind of like a question mark and shows how competitive the series is and how important issue that the issue is going to be we had.
41 cars and only 33.
Were able to getting to the rays send and that's why it's going to be a big show -- a big challenge this year.
And year old basically driving the same car there obviously prepared by different teams what what's the key to making a car faster than the guy who's 33 in the great order or in this case the woman's thirty -- again -- -- details I mean details it's a big part of it.
Because you just mission.
On the power the large chassis and -- some tires everybody has exactly the same thing it's not different than anybody so.
-- and -- sometimes just a little -- of doing the rear -- going a little lower balance of the car and and depend -- organizations so you concede that the level of the teams it's becoming impressive and that's why did that competition is -- -- an oval track but it's very unlike most of the other was -- drive -- efforts of people describe -- -- a road course with four left -- what what's -- like to do a -- but can you tell -- to -- -- it's it's pretty tough I -- you actually trying to go to the limit of the car and sometimes.
Kind of crossing what's because -- -- is so big they have four corners.
If we don't -- to -- if you don't -- to what direction the wind is going.
If it does affect the car our cars are very sensitive on that and that direction and -- we don't have many banking on the corner like one and a half mile ovals so.
That makes the car very unstable special when you start taking the downforce out so -- it's one of those things that some.
That -- -- magical it's a unique and it's it's it's stuff but so he did and today when you guessed we would get it right.
It's the best place in the world.
I've -- a lot of people this year to Robert talking about the wind is that a factor -- a lot of tracks because it seem like it was really a factor here bring you to the same turn around to different hours during the day becoming a different lines means that just particular to the Indianapolis Indianapolis affected like I said because you going you -- to take as much of bound for you tried to push straight you want a straight line speed.
And much corner speed because we knew in the corner he kind of scrubbing that speed any kind of -- and now we just want to try to go as fast you can -- -- -- But I'll -- you -- time.
Now when he went to different almost had the banking.
That makes you take that downforce out an -- and -- the -- starting because you have been making healthy and external one and -- -- the wind.
Approach indeed striking an apple is it's so effective now we have approach to different tracks.
It's not as bad as it looks.
He has lived off the throttle at all is -- to afford and you -- you as you.
For it to go fast you've got to pedal to the -- they otherwise you'll make it left it all looks so smooth on television but it in it in the course -- how many oh moments oh yeah that.
I don't think to a we we we had enough you know all all of -- -- the race because it's so many.
And that's the key you gotta be able to expect have been expected and at which is the hardest thing you know I have a great spotter out there.
You -- have a great team kind of like calling a worry that it stops.
Then he stopped that so many mistakes happened right in the first part of the race so well that's why.
Pays its economy -- I'm impatient you got to be aggressive the right time and and again.
I have a group -- tire and have been a great team.
That does have a great experience and it gives me great confidence to -- in there and hung around.
On Sunday and he's been there for a long time enough for a hundred years what's the atmosphere like -- -- -- think this is special -- just everybody and I mean we're talking about a hundred years of history.
So many drivers so many legends.
Be ending the and it's just an Artest will be -- that the oldest here is important names are important not dates like for example the fiftieth anniversary of the hunted and immersive.
-- -- -- Just via an evening that race it's going to be an -- so long.
Mom really excited -- wait to have to be there mentioned earlier and it features 33 on the grid is that he for women in the race this year you think a hundred years ago they had any idea that hopefully that was -- you know it's it's it's a male sports and and the -- -- are taking over you know which is we're in trouble but.
It's great because this sport more spore gives you.
The same level as any type of low person you know it doesn't matter if it's a female or it's a male.
And for me.
I respect those that drivers that I don't care if if it's female have a long hair and a short hair whatever it is.
But the point is I respect whoever is in front of me well in the good job you know keeping their car because eating is hard for example -- one of those who -- she crashed the car.
And with the born hands.
After the accident she went out there put a couple of them on the qualifying the car in the race and she's gonna -- so that shows.
But it's a driver mentality it's not.
Female or male is just a driver mentality lot of these drivers Simonyi one of them come over from Europe -- obviously from South America Brazil.
Not grown up in an oval track environment.
But they're great drivers anyway -- How important is it to have that over trek experience when you go to places like -- -- a really good driver pick up huge huge excuse is part of this game and that that's why for the rookies.
Which I was one of them one -- -- gotta just finish the race because literally so much we don't know about three to two and a half hours a racing normally.
The other reason that we do it's about two hours a racist so it's still when you think it's if we think it's -- over it's just half point.
And that's why it's -- -- pays out a lot.
And I just hope -- the issue of -- the factors well most of the races you do during the year she opened Thursday -- -- practice or qualifying -- out the -- on Sunday Indy is still a month long event.
How does that affect the way you prepare the car the way you prepare for the race I -- does make it harder because you have more time to work on things.
Or does that not make it easier and how does that work it in because it isn't much different than the rest of the races on the schedule that's a very good question because sound.
You know on every time I get it close the race to think oh my god I still don't have like enough time -- actually spend -- Ten days you know working on the car so -- It is just the excitement you know it is good for you to have different scenarios.
Solved set ups and that traffic no traffic by herself whatever it is.
But and but again that's why it's important for you to have a great plan and that's what we -- the entire.
Fifteen days they were there.
And and that's -- -- -- enough for the race hopefully told his preparation that we did.
Who -- off on Sunday to you -- you're are you worried about my teammates they're very strong basically they have what I do.
I feel very -- -- my race car.
And we're pretty much in the same mall but again you can predict 14 but -- always did.
Keep teams like tenacity Newman has.
Now with the community.
And he has two -- teammates.
They're going to be tough because -- who have experience as well as the drivers and so all of this guys certainly they gonna be very strong.
And but again -- to betting my money my team every -- some changes of the track this year we've got the side by side restarts that we NASCAR does that this is -- IndyCar this season I think that's gonna affect the outcome of this race.
A little bit of -- way he you know because sun certainly for me it's been tough season because of that on the -- course.
Young having a little hard time on those kind of the circumstances but.
And the road course will from sixty at the first year as a big dramatic change in the speed now in Eden he he went on and do that we probably -- -- Alone fish gear and Steve Steve gear -- so with my food it's just the might the flow.
And I just hope Vietnam and everyone gives a little mineral and you know because our yellows and things like that it's it's it's a potential for.
An audio -- -- you gotta make sure and you gotta be the -- so there you can.
Have a chance to have to two in the race even bigger changes coming next year -- -- this year rivers contingency -- mentioned actually have three different engines and different body work for the cars all still use it Dallara chassis we have an impact different choices aerodynamics and that sort of thing.
Do you start from scratch -- does everyone come and constant level consulate I think similar team Penske is going to be a little bit ahead of the game just as they've got to get things together well they wanna keep like everyone the same but I'm attracting the manufactures are going to be able to a work on -- -- stuff.
And it's still a little bit of debate if they want to open up for different.
But for sure at this point everybody start from the from zero and and I hope team Penske has a vivid -- hits.
You know but it's it's not always the case.
I'm sure Izod IndyCar Series gonna try to keep everybody in the same level nominee give a -- to you.
An argument to the other teams are gonna try to make sure everybody -- -- the same time and then from there are you gotta be able to run but remember.
Not only to car it's going to be tough to set -- but also the engines.
You know we are we having three other manufacturers.
Are coming in now or -- keeping but Chevrolet and and -- Those manufactured in and how to prepare as well who named in the gonna have to in terms of -- So imagine still many varieties so you'll be -- you'll be interested to see next year but it just.
Point man -- focus.
From the -- IndyCar got Randy Bernard the new CEO they're making all these changes come up with -- new promotions from a driver's standpoint you know there's a lot going on outside of the races.
Is that something that affects you in the race obviously this -- -- the changes -- side by side started -- just the more promotion.
No more excitement that's been created on television all that sort of things that affect you in the driver seat or if you know you still -- to just focus on the driving.
But the marketing people take it -- -- did.
-- -- I think is great you've got to try in the new things especially the double file restart you've got to try and I finally someone.
End up making the the the decisions to start.
-- something different.
Even it is sometimes those award may be like -- just talk about do you think that -- double file restart is going to be.
Again on the home road course we don't -- we -- just got to make sure that we try to weigh in that we -- -- all the way so.
When we finally found find in that -- -- makes you know that put all the ingredients together.
-- -- -- this is the -- going to be for a long time and die and that site I believe it's it's a great job that rain is doing.
He got to make decision one point -- not keep light shooting all of the place and and I do believe naturally you know the media dictation.
It's gonna come come around you know it's it's it's exciting it's a race is exciting.
And I do feel will we are aware -- skies are limit.
You obviously fast on the weekends this is a cartoon though would you drive when you into his car you -- -- -- -- wears away that's.
Everybody take a chance of actually on the sports -- hoping he'll get -- and -- it.
Now it -- when he nice to have a -- to anybody and I have to sell to pay my attorneys so I have an -- I kind of have a like.
Believe it -- not BS and SUV and the X.
I'm a father now have a little girl you know you got to take care of I gotta think of all this -- how we view the instantly space for the toys -- -- -- let them -- The nine minute and they I'm a fan of you know laws and Ferrari Lamborghini is old they Aston -- I love those couple cars and and again when they for everybody to have one of the again.
Hang in there against and in Indy 500 driver for team Penske thanks for dropping by today.
Get -- -- race this Sunday.
Don't know -- event.
How -- see you next Thursday -- fox -- -- -- -- -- will leave you with our own little version of the 500 well we were test driving the Fiat.
500 convertible this week you drive put a piece you covered receivers are catching -- they had a lot of kids -- lot.
There and they're neatly into cars so they they're -- be and I wanna see -- -- it'd be enough.
-- -- -- -- target wouldn't have really been a 101 horse powers under the -- is gonna worry about -- of the human race with a top -- 209 miles an hour and just leave with that right now -- next week fox car report live.
There are few things -- -- -- that are better than driving around in a red Italian convertible.
Except maybe today.
This is the Fiat 500 C -- they like to call it the kink which antidote -- -- The auto makers retro modern take a post war Italian economy car designed to just give me a little perspective about how big is.
A Mini Cooper is about that much longer they're -- of worked for today.
About that -- short -- the price falls in between those two as well starting at around 20000 dollars.
Although it's been on -- in Europe for a couple years now for the US market gets a couple of changes including extra safety equipment.
More sound deadening material -- stronger air conditioning system if you like that sort of thing larger -- it's because we love that sort of thing.
For the consequences of using the larger cup holders wider seats.
Because we're lazy like that we also get our -- automatic transmission.
But he can't -- with a five speed manual transmission in other cases connected to a high tech -- import coordinator for -- -- 101 horsepower so it's not very fast.
-- turned us down.
Then there's the convertible top which is really more of a glorified some -- because it only opens up the center panel.
Of the -- leaving most of the framework of the -- attacked.
But added structural stability so they don't have to put in a bunch of races and that sort of thing to encroached on your interior space which is at a premium.
Can also be opened at speeds of up to fifty or sixty miles an hour and despite the weather I really can't help myself from -- And that's not necessarily one of the smartest thing remembered in the 2012 -- by.
-- -- to -- Fox News.
