Eight at California plant turning unwanted waste into fuel.
That -- hundreds -- tracks and get this is actually better for the environment to deal with that trash Claudia -- is like -- -- Cisco with more hi how this works Claudia.
Well -- it -- has to do with methane every landfill produces methane which on the one hand is a dangerous greenhouse gas but on the other.
He's the key ingredient in L -- G liquefied natural gas.
Harnessing all that methane and turning it into something beneficial is -- whole idea behind this garbage to gas facility at the Altamont landfill in Livermore California.
The LNG made out of the methane is now fueling the collection trucks bringing the garbage to the -- Behind me is one of over 200 gas -- that we have here at the Altamont landfill.
What we do is we drill into the -- mass.
We play so well down deep into the waste can extract from that well the landfill gas which -- -- compare with the LNG plant.
Right next to the landfill the methane is transformed into LNG which is cheaper and cleaner than diesel.
Cash.
Natural gas.
That we run -- has.
Basically the same horsepower.
It's -- Bernie in our drivers love it is good for the environment I mean it's it's great this isn't the.
Only methane conversion plant of its kind but it is the biggest -- it produces 101000 gallons of liquefied natural gas.
Enough to power 300 collection trucks and every year -- eliminate 30000 tons of carbon dioxide.
Perhaps the only drawback is the cost.
-- it is expensive because we have to put it through multi step purification system to remove all the impurities in the landfill gas.
And that prototype conversion plant was expensive to build as well about fifteen million dollars.
But supporters argue that as the technology improves costs will come down and more landfills will be re cycled.
From simple disposal sites into clean energy production facilities.
-- sentencing -- Cowan thank you so much that story today.
