Larry -- -- the director of the University of Virginia center for politics.
Good -- there.
-- -- -- Larry can he survive this.
He can survive it at least he can stay in congress potentially though there -- a lot of people who believe he should resign and by the way not all of them were Republicans.
This has been a major distraction for Democrats is continuing to be they wanted to focus on Medicare and instead they're all talking about X rated photos.
What about this from let's say -- New York delegation perspective from.
Even his constituents perspective when he comes out and he calls all of us into his office and then promulgate this this -- as we heard today.
What does that mean politically as he's standing there saying he's not going to resign and he didn't violate any laws.
Well we've always -- didn't how many scandals that we've been through over thirty or forty years.
It's it's the cover up in the lying that -- -- Not the original offense and then this was just a bold face lie lie after lie after lie there's no question about it.
Now look he's got a year and a half to go until the next election he comes from -- heavily democratic district so if he was going to be challenged it would have to be in a primary.
But you know -- the real penalty that he is going to pay is believe it or not.
He was potentially the front runner to be the next mayor of New York City.
Somehow I don't think that's gonna happen.
It's not.
Wouldn't necessarily that the scandal would keep him from becoming mayor it's router that the citizens of the great city of New York aren't going to want to become a national and international joke.
Larry didn't take long for Republicans to jump on this just within the past few minutes the national Republican campaign committee put out a statement saying in part quote.
It's time for democratic leadership to explain why congressman winners actions.
Never aroused any suspicion and when they rushed to his defense -- so many Americans were shocked and confused by his bizarre.
And disturbing behavior.
Not surprised gumption I'm sure by that quote but.
What does it mean in the big picture as you head toward toward an election beyond congressman wingers that district.
Well it's an embarrassment obviously is an embarrassment for the part -- contrast.
What's going on with congressman -- To what happened with congressman Chris Lee another New York congressman who was involved in a somewhat similar scandal involving -- -- -- -- -- What happened with him -- resigned instantaneously.
In fact.
Most of us heard about the scandal after we heard about his resignation that's -- Quickly it occurred earlier this year in New York 26 for that special election was just felt.
So there is a contrast to be made -- and look fair or unfair that's politics you're you're going to have partisan attacks in situations like this which is why parties.
Did test.
The situation when members involve themselves.
In scandal last thing he said he did not violate the law he said he did not think he used any congressional resources.
During.
What he did.
This is a quote from the house ethics.
Book.
Any thing.
Supported with the official -- is an official resource including congressional offices so the question I guess is.
He called all of the reporters including myself into his congressional office to make this defense.
Someone could link that says that line couldn't.
Absolutely and look it doesn't take that.
I just that to get a reprimand from the house you can -- be reprimanded by the house for embarrassing the house for bringing.
The house.
Into kind of ill repute which I think applies in this case.
So it's possible that someone could pursue ethics charges against congressman -- whether they would succeed or not I don't know but.
Obviously it would further embarrass the congressman who is clearly deeply -- -- OK Larry thank you very much for your time.
Thank you -- -- one.
